I had booked 2 rooms at this B&B some 3 months before our arrival there last month. Unfortunately the couple that were holidaying with my husband & myself had to return home due to a family crisis the day before the Cornwall part of our trip. Heather was notified immediately that one of the rooms would not be required. She asked that we do the cancellation through Booking.Com (whom we had booked with). Despite confirming via email with Booking.Com that only one room was to be cancelled plus Heathers daughter confirming this also, by phone, on the day of our arrival that that was the case we were disappointed to find that both rooms had been cancelled when we did arrive. Although our room, Crows Nest was already occupied we were offered "William" or "Forrabury Heights" for our 3 night stay by a member of staff who had dicussed this with Heather. With "William" being the larger of the 2 rooms we opted for that one. We unpacked and got settled. The room was clean and well presented & staff member, Leah, was delightful. However shortly after unpacking, Heather informed my husband that we could only stay in "William" for 2 nights and we would have to move into "Forrabury Height" for our third night as they had accepted a booking for "William" for that night. Although I accept that Booking.Com were responsible for mistakenly cancelling the 2 rooms it was Heathers handling of the situation which disappointed us. Surely we should have been allowed to stay the third night in "William" and the other couple who stayed just one night, be put in "Forrabury Heights". Upon checking out after our 3 night stay we told Heather that we were disappointed with the way the situation was handled but she would only blame Booking.Com for everything & she believed she had handled the situation well. I would not stay here again because of Heathers attitude but on the plus side the B&B was clean, comfortable and lovely breakfasts. However Heather seems to think that you need no more than 6 ice cubes to chill an unchilled bottle of white wine as she refused us more when we asked but we later found that for £1.20 we bought a bag of ice cubes in the local Spar & stored them in the B&B's freezer.

Room Tip: William is a lovely room. Spacious & quiet.

This is a very interesting review for me and I am totally happy to respond. I would like to confirm that what ever happened with this booking was dealt with professionally by myself. The booking was cancelled by telephone by the guests the day before they were due to arrive for one room only but that evening I received a cancellation notice from Booking.com for both rooms. Even though the booking had been cancelled at such short notice during a busy period I agreed to refund all the deposit (as the cancellation was due to the fact that they were cancelling as they had to attend a family emergency I thought this was only fair) Because of the cancellation system the two rooms automatically became available and shortly afterwards and on the same evening the rooms were then booked by other guests. I received a cancellation notification from Booking.com. for both rooms and I dealt with it accordingly. At this stage I assumed both couples had decided to cancel. The following day, on the day the guests were due to arrive Sara called at lunchtime to see if we had a room for them which we confirmed we did have a room available but at this time it was not confirmed that it was the original room. On arrival Sara told Leah that was okay and she said at least we have a bed. The next issue I would like to comment on is the ice. I did not refuse extra ice. Sara's husband was going to hand me a large ice bag which I was asked to fill with ice but I explained I didn't have that much ice so I supplied them with a full tray of ice and because of this I also supplied them with a stainless steel wine bottle cooler and a pair of wine glasses. We have a licence and we also have a bar where we sell wine, our white wine is in the fridge to be served chilled and the guests should buy their wine from our bar rather than bringing in their own. They didn't seem to think it was an issue to bring their own wine and they were more than happy with the wine cooler and the wine glasses when I suggested this to them. I didn't mention that they shouldn't be bringing in in their own wine as I understood that they were not totally happy with the situation I offered the wine glasses and also the wine cooler for their own wine to make their evening more pleasurable for them. I did this in a polite and helpful way. On the morning of their departure the situation was not good as Sara was complaining bitterly but as far as I was concerned and I am still concerned I dealt with the issue of the cancellation of the rooms in a totally professional way. I can only work with the information I am given. As I explained to Sara I was sorry that she was upset but I also explained to her that I was annoyed at being blamed for something which was totally out of my personal control. She was very aggressive with me and I firmly, politely and professionally said to her that I would not argue with her. I would welcome Sara and her husband back here any time for them to have a relaxing and enjoyable stay and I sincerely hope they return in the future. Heather

We visited the hotel as part of a family trip to celebrate my mothers birthday and revisit places stayed in our childhood. The Bottreaux was chosen as a central location for Boscastle and we were not disappointed. Heather , the owner greeted us with a very warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for herd urging our weekend break. The breakfast was unbelievable, everything you could imagine and more , the rooms very tasteful ,clean and spacious and Heather was a perfect host. Would strongly recommend this hotel as an ideal location to relax and stay in and we will definitely return.

We had a very comfortable four night stay in "William" which is a double roof with a super king size bed. The room and en suite were of a good size, well decorated, and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and food cooked to order. The staff are very friendly and helpful too. There's the added bonus of an excellent pub next door where the food is very good and great if you don't want to travel too far to eat in the evening.

Just stayed for 2 nights in this hotel, rated 4* but very disappointing as my expectations were not met. On the plus side the staff were extremely friendly, breakfast was very good, parking was available and free wi-fi. However our room, titled 'Smugglers', was basic, rough brown coir matting on floor (fraying where it meets bathroom tiles), adjacent to the pub with associated noise until late - double glazing ineffective as noise penetrated even with windows closed - bathroom resembled a clinic with all-white tiles covering all the walls and cold tap very difficult to stop dripping (could have done with a wrench!). Arriving with luggage the narrow stairs were an obstacle and the very strong spring on the door was hazardous and potentially damaging if you did not step aside quickly! For a 4* the room was small, cramped and basic with a view of the side of the pub. Overall felt very dated and in need of a makeover. Even the double glazing alongside the breakfast table was misted up on a hot, sunny day! Our previous B&B at £72 per night and subsequent farmhouse B&B at £75 per night were significantly better quality and value compared to this hotel at £100 per night! Finally, hotel sits atop a steep hill above Boscastle so either an arduous 20 min walk or a few minutes drive to reach the town. We would not stay there again..

Room Tip: Do not stay in Smugglers! Other rooms seem to rate better reviews so check what you are getting.

Thank you for writing a review for us and we are all very disappointed that your expectations were not met as we put alot of time and effort into ensuring our guests have a pleasant stay here. So
I would like to make just a few comments in response. We are not a 4 star hotel, we are a 4 star bed and breakfast, the criteria for the two types of businesses are very different. The awards are given by Visit Britain and it is their decision on the ratings. They have given us a breakfast award and also a silver award which we are very proud of. All our rooms are different to each other so depending on what a guest reserves depends on what they get and I realise this can be more difficult if guests book on a website rather than calling on the phone to discuss the various room options. All the rooms have been photographed professionally and all the sizes of the rooms are noted on Booking.com site for guests information for them to make their own decision on what they want. We are always improving our public rooms and bedrooms for our guests' benefit . I agree the staircase is narrower than some but we don't usually have a problem and as it is an old building there is nothing we can do to alter it, if my husband is here when guests check in he is more than happy to carry cases up to the bedrooms on arrival and back down on the morning of departure to save our guests maybe having to struggle with large heavy cases. With regard to our price it is competitive with other establishments similar to ours in the locality. We are disappointed and sorry that you say you would not stay here again as we have many returning guests over the years who come here to relax and enjoy their stay with us. Heather Acornley

My wife and I stayed for two nights as part of a touring holiday in Cornwall. We chose Bottreaux House on the basis if the Trip Adviser reviews and were not disappointed. The room was compact, clean, well decorated and with a good sized comfortable bed. The en-suite bathroom was small but adequate. Breakfast was very good with juice, cereals and fresh fruit salad available on a serve yourself basis and then a cooked breakfast prepared to order. The only criticism is the limited amount of car parking on site and with restricted street parking this could be problematic. If staying here you should note the Bottreaux House is at the top end of town with a long steady drop down into the centre of Boscastle and really a journey for which you would want some form of transport, especially for the return journey. Limited public transport is available and the parking is free in Boscastle in the evening but may prove difficult to find in the high season.
