“Brilliant Time at a Brilliant Place...”
Reviewed 19 August 2011

We were part of a group of friends staying to celebrate a 40th birthday - so there was a lively mix of couples, families and dogs!

We hired a couple of the stone barns - we were in Westhayes which was beautiful. Our bedroom had amazing views of the surrounding area.

The onsite facilities are amazing - especially useful when the weather isn't so good. We used the swimming pool every day and I even managed to put some time in on the treadmill to run off some of the amazing pub food we had at lunchtimes!

Helsbury is definately the most luxurious self-catering my wife and I have ever stayed in - the attention to detail is great. We're not the most eco-friendly of people but found ourselves taking great pleasure in sorting all our rubbish into the various re-cycling bins and getting a sense of the whole sustainability theme.

A great time was had by all!

Spacious cottage with good facilities - a bit slopey and windy and not walkable to the town - don't bother with the recomnded local shop because it's not local and is expensive - great beaches to go with the dogs though.

When we lived on site we did keep a few chickens, but we moved off site last year and took our chickens with us (which were subsequently eaten by a fox - but hey, that's chickens for you). This enabled us to let our stunning Farmhouse for holidays, it's proving to be extremely popular and get's rave reviews from our guests! Check our web site for more information.

Had an enjoyable week at Helsbury Park, Easter week. Our family of 4 with 2 teenagers, my sister her husband and their dog. These are 5* dog friendly cottages, and although dogs are allowed in all 3 cottages on site, there wasnt a hint of dog smell anywhere in the cottage, which to me is a very good sign. My Husband was a little apprenhensive about booking into a cottage that allowed dogs as we normally wouldnt go for this sort of accomodation, but as we were travelling with my sister, that did, we thought for once it would not matter. When you pull into the grounds of Helsbury, you are met with the most terrific views . We stayed in Marhayes cottage which sleeps 7. The Owner was there to greet us and show us around. The cottage was stunning and of a very high standard in fittings and furnishings, spotlessly clean with not a hint of a dog smell anywhere. We were more than pleased with our accomodation. This is an eco-friendly place and they obviously encourage and promote an eco friendly enviroment, with plenty of various re-cycle bins for rubbish, and eco- friendly products throughout the cottage. There is a huge swimming pool complex on site, gym and sauna(sauna at a charge), which is simply stunning and has been done to a particularly high specification. Having 2 children, this was a bonus and we did make the most of it after we had come back from our walks. One of the nicest pools we have encountered....
Helsbury Park is situated inland, but within easy commute by car to lots of lovely places. We particularly enjoyed walking on Daymer bay and getting the ferry across to Padstow, where they do high speed boat rides for £5.00 per person, well worth it and great fun. Tingtagel is worth a visit but the climb and walk to King Aurthers ruins is not for the faint hearted!!. Our favourite place was Fowey. The most stunning little place we have seen in along time. Quaint, historic, picturesque, all comes to mind, it was simply beautiful. We took a 45min boat ride all around the bay and out to sea. The coast line with the stunning properties was breath taking. There are plenty of eateries, varying in price. We had afternoon tea in " The dwelling house", in the town centre and we can all say it was the best cream tea ever. The qaintest tea rooms you could ever see and the service was impeccable with delicious fresh baked scones, home-made jam and clotted creams. We also ate at the Quay-side restaurant "Food for thought on the Quay and had the most delicious "posh fish and chips", prawns, seabass, cod and lemon sole in ale batter with beef dripping chips , mushy peas and tartar sauce, a cold glass of champagne, thankyou very much and a trio of creme brulee's to finish, shared by 3 of us , i might add. Our next favourite place was the Custard Diner in Padstow. Another great place to eat, good food, no, great food actually and the best sticky toffee pudding ive tasted in some time. We did eat at a very famous seafood restaurant a couple of years back when we were last in Padstow, but to be honest, its over priced and over rated. I felt The Custard Diner was far better for food and service and overall cost. The worst place we ate was a Pub in St. Teath., not far from Helsbury park and unfortunaetly recommended by them in their information literature. Cheap and Nasty comes to mind and i would not recommend this to anyone. If you like frozen deep fried roast potatoes and strawberry cheescake in the form of watery angel delight , then it might be for you, but we didnt rate it at all.
To sum up, heslbury Park is simply the place to stay, definately 5* self catering accomodation, ideally located to visit some beautiful places around cornwall but also tranquill for a chill out holiday, with a stunning pool complex that is a very big bonus. The only criticism i have, is that it could have done with an extra couple of TV's in the bedrooms. There was only one in the main lounge and at night it would have been nice to have had additional tv's to watch, especially for our children. There was tv sockets in the bedroom so perhapes the owners could consider this for the future. All in all a very pleasant stay and would definately recommend to other people.
