Wonderful location, nice facilities, terrible hospitality. In 3 days we didn't get one smile. We felt like we were putting them out and very unwelcome. This was a shame as it was otherwise very nice and food ect was good.

We are always concerned to see a review such as this as without fail we greet people to our hotel with a smile and warm welcome and always chat to guests as they come in and out and am certain we would have greeted you in exactly the same manner. Looking back I see you stayed for 2 nights and were part of a wedding group. I recall we arranged tables at breakfast so that guests could sit with other members of their party and much socialising went on amongst family and friends. Usually we chat to our guests at breakfast but your group were in deep conversation amongst yourselves therefore we tried to be unobtrusive and go about service discretely. We were extremely busy over this weekend and as a small hotel we do everything ourselves, including waiting up for people coming back in the early hours of the morning, which occurred on both nights of your stay - although I appreciate this was not you. So if you felt neglected in anyway we can only apologise and put it down to the fact we were concentrating on keeping everyone happy with their requests - including non wedding guests. I would also like to add that if people staying at the hotel engage us in conversation, or smile at us we smile back, it is after all a 2 way street!

This was our second visit to the Fairbank and so glad we returned. The breakfast is well cooked, the selection of fruit and nuts are of high quality and the milk is white, from cows. The joy of this place is that is a relaxed environment, Elaine and Paul do walk around in bare feet but they do not as far as I know put their feet in your food and clean feet are no less hygienic than outdoor footwear. This hotel is the perfect complement to the two local beaches which are within easy walking distance and intimate, charming and restful, and if I can be so bold, superlatives which also apply to the Fairbank.

Room Tip: St. Carantoc has a fourposter bed and fab views of the sea.

brilliant time - thanks a mill!! Breakfast to die for and a fantastic view - we could see gannets diving around Goose Rock whilst we were lying in bed and a short stroll gets you on the beach or the coastal path

I've now stayed a few times for various purposes and each time have enjoyed it. On this visit, Paul and Elaine helped me with some difficulties I experienced during my trip down and made continuing my holiday a possibility. Thank you. The hotel offers a great place to relax and enjoy the location. I felt very well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed the room, hotel and food. See you soon.

We chose the 2 star Fairbank based on Tripadvisor reviews - as we so often do. The trouble with this strategy is that, too often nowadays, the over use of superlatives by reviewers can distort reality. Do not get us wrong, this hotel is 'pleasant' but not exceptional as apparently judged by a recent hotel inspector and some other guests. We try to be very objective and tell it as it is - eg. have a look at our concurrent reviews on the Old Albion Inn and Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant.

Our welcome was nothing out of the ordinary - generally warm and our room was nothing special - adequate and comfortable - though it had great views over Crantock Bay, and the en-suite, whilst not capacious, did what it said on the tin. The power shower was efficient and effective. We slept well every night of our three nights at the hotel and we were never disturbed by the sound of other guests, even when a wedding group stayed overnight. The decor was ordinary, in the bedroom and public areas - just the sort of style and colour scheme you would expect in most reasonable B&B's nowadays. So how the recent inspection could conclude that the accommodation was 'exceptional' is puzzling. 'Exceptional' by definition has to be an exception to that which one would find generally - the accommodation is not exceptional.

The breakfast room has great views towards the sea - but only if you have a table by the window. The hotel has received an award for its breakfast and this is proudly advertised in the breakfast room. But did the breakfast really live up to the hype? - in our view, not quite. The breakfast buffet was run of the mill - the usual selection of cereals, grapefruit, mixed fruit, yoghurt and jams. There was no choice of milk - full cream, semi-skinned, soya, etc. - only one jug of unlabelled milk. The owners could argue - 'You only had to ask' - but with an award winning breakfast, should you have to ask? Staff serving the breakfast were barefoot - moving between a food preparation area and the breakfast room in bare feet does not point to high enough standards of hygiene. The choice at breakfast was nothing out of the ordinary other than the option of a fresh fruit platter. Everything else is what you would expect to see in a decent hotel. However, porridge was not overtly offered and when we asked if kippers were available, the response was hardly encouraging. In other hotels and guest houses, when we have posed a similar question, the best response has been 'We're really sorry, but we'll get them in for tomorrow.'

Elaine and Paul were engaging and helpful. Tips on parking in Padstow and general local knowledge were good but we were never asked if we had a good night or how we found the new vegetarian sausages - these were ordered in the absence of the kippers. There was no real sense of wanting to know how things were going during our stay, though we were asked how much we enjoyed eating at Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant - excellent on both occasions by the way.

Overall, value for money was not that good. £104 per night was over the top even allowing for the sea views. One of our favourite hotels - the Croft Hotel in Bridgnorth - is rated 4 star, has an outstanding welcome, a superb breakfast buffet and menu choice including kippers, home made jams, home made fresh fruit salad, home made muesli, etc, all in a timber framed, original Tudor setting - no sea views, but an engaging welcome, great character accommodation and a superb location for no more than £75 per night for two, including breakfast.

We had a pleasant 3 night stay in a reasonable hotel in Crantock - nothing exceptional, other than the price.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments following your stay here at the Fairbank Hotel. We 're sorry you had to add a 'but' to your review where we did not meet your expectations. We are what we claim - a 2 star family run hotel and realise we won't always fulfil our guests' requirements - although, as you say, you only needed to ask. There are so many different products these days and so to have all in stock would be nigh on impossible, so we provide a good selection at breakfast that suits the majority of our guests and try to accommodate special requests, within reason, when we receive them. Our price, unfortunately, has to include 20% VAT which we then pass on to the Government, I would expect the B & B in Bridgnorth is probably below the VAT threshold so their price would reflect this. Needless to say we are pleased you enjoyed your experiences elsewhere on your stay as Cornwall has much to offer.

Elaine and Paul are extremely welcoming, rooms clean and comfortable with superb showers. Eating a delicious, locally sourced breakfast while looking out over beautiful Crantock Beach and Goose Rock takes some beating.
