“Fantastic weekend made special by fantastic Sawmills!”
Reviewed 9 March 2018 for a stay in March 2018

Superb venue for a large group. Booked the house and the lodge - both excellent, beds really comfy, place really peaceful and lots of visiting birds. Whilst waiting for tide started with coffee in The Cormorant Hotel, then tasty soup and mugs of hot chocolate (with a slug of rum) in the Fisherman's Arms - both places friendly and within 15-20 min walk of Sawmills. It was still snowing when loaded up the boat but Sawmills cozy warm and welcoming, boosted by lighting log burner. Luckily snow thawed enough the next day for rest of party to get down long, steep hill into the village. Ruth, who runs the place, was great, really helpful, nothing too much trouble. Fantastic place! Would stay again.

“A beautiful weekend in a secluded unusual house!”
Reviewed 17 January 2018 for a stay in January 2018

This was second time we booked put the Old Sawmills house and lodge. Yet again another wonderful long weekend. In a beautiful setting, surrounded by woods and with views out to the estuary, the Sawmills makes a perfect get away for a group to enjoy. The manager was really kind and helpful with getting everyone's luggage there by boat, she was happy to do more than one trip. The guests were also very happy to arrive at the place by boat! It was great being able to cook for all our guests in the large kitchen and we all took a walk (about 20 minutes) to the local pub. The building itself is so quirky inside and out, you can't beat staying somewhere you can only travel to by boat or by foot! A truly magical place to stay, we would love to book it again

“Fabulous tranquility”
Reviewed 26 June 2017 for a stay in June 2017

A perfect place to unwind and listen to the wind in the trees and watch the Swans in the creek go about their day. No mobile phone signals and no cars - bliss.
The last review I posted on this website was after a distinctly average visit to the 7* Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi - for me the Lodge at the Old Sawmills was a better place to spend a long weekend.

We stayed in the Lodge for a long needed break away together - and it was perfect. There is everything you need - comfortable beds, flumpy sofa, warm shower, fast wifi, TV, fully equipped kitchen and lots and lots of silence. There was a family staying in the Sawmills house but the lodge is separate and we didn't here or see them through the weekend.

The only way to get here with your luggage is by boat - it is possible to walk through the woods from Golant. Ruth met us in the car park at Golant with her dog Bow, and gave us a parking token (so no parking fees) and then there is a short boat trip down the river to the Old Sawmill.

We hired a boat for our stay from Maurice (Fowey River Boat Hire). He delivered it to us as agreed and it gave us the freedom to explore the whole area - allowing for tides. ( this estuary is tidal although the new pontoon allows access to the river even at the lowest tides).
The walk to Golant takes about 20 mins through the woods and the Fishermans Arms serves a good pint and good food - we ate there twice in the evening. There are numerous other footpaths through the adjacent woods which were great for walking out dogs.
The river trip down to Fowey and Polruin takes about 30 mins and is a lovely way to look at all the river side properties on the way.

A perfect place for a relaxing holiday - we will be back.

“Magical Location”
Reviewed 14 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

The house itself is a good venue for a large group. It's finished to a good standard with plenty of space and is finished to a high standard. A big range cooker and plenty of large pans are well suited to catering for a large group. If there is a criticism it's that the main living space is a little small for very large parties. BUT...

None of this mattered because the location is just magical. Every time I looked out of the window I couldn't believe where I was. The tidal creek outside fills and empties allowing access by boat for a 5 hour window around high tide. We hired a boat and were very glad we did. It was like having the opportunity to live a different life for a week, living by the rhythm of the tides. The estuary of the River Fowey beyond the creek is absolutely stunning and gives the opportunity to explore by boat.. Popping down to Fowey for groceries became a treat that everyone wanted to do.

If you do want to get out at other times it's about a 10-15 minute walk through the woods back to the parking in Golant.

The only negative was that the company operating the parking in Golant put tickets on 3 of our cars when we'd been unable to buy tickets because the machine was out of order. When the machine's working you can buy tickets for 3 days at a time. This was in no way connected to the owners of the cottage but is a point to be aware of.

As earlier I'd forgive this because of the location - if you get a chance to stay here I'd take it in a heartbeat. We have caught the bug and we're now looking for other cottages with boats for our next trip.

Management Response
22 Sep 2016
Thanks for taking the time to write a review and so glad you enjoyed your stay. I'd just like to reassure potential guests that the Sawmills will shortly have its own private parking so they won't need to use the pay and display carpark in the village anymore.

“Birthday adventure with overnight sleeper train”

I had an absolute blast here - and most of my 20 strong group spent at least part of the weekend working out how to repeat it.
We got the overnight sleeper train from London which made the journey part of the holiday - also a full weekend was possible without taking annual leave. A quick taxi ride and a boat trip meant that London was far away both physically and mentally. Perfect.

Ruth couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The pictures do not do the place justice - there really isn't anyone else nearby but you can still walk to Golant or Fowey for a pub lunch. Everything works but is not so pristine you worry about having a large group.

“beautiful tranquil location, high end accommodation”
Reviewed 26 December 2014 for a stay in December 2014

we hosted out Christmas party at the sawmills in golant. the main room is spacious, a fabulous wood burner , the kitchen area ample for preparing for 20+ people :) bedrooms are comfortable, the location though is second to none, set in a small creek on the banks of the river fowey, serene and peaceful. Highly recommended
