Owner description: A great 13th century circular keep standing on an earlier Norman mound, atop a high spur beside the River Fowey. Twice visited by the Black Prince, it finally saw action during the Civil War. Commanding fantastic views, it makes an excellent picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“Good value, Fantastic with good weather, space for kids to run around.”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Have been meaning to go for years, but finally trotted up there (4 mins drive up from lostwithiel) this week on a very sunny afternoon. Probably only saw another 20 people there over a few hours. There were young kids running around / rolling down hills and on small bikes. There were couples reading magazines and chilling out, able to make pit stops down in the cafe for ice creams and machine coffee and tea. The ruin itself is much better than I'd expected. The signs are ok and the £3 book gives a bit more info. NB - great view of the castle from the duchy of cornwall nursery. If it's raining I wouldn't bother though.

“Beautiful ruin in a fantastic setting”
Reviewed 12 April 2014 via mobile

Restormel Castle is an ideal location for a shorter family outing if you're not looking for a whole day out. Unlike Pendennis Castle (approx 90 minutes away in Falmouth), Restormel is a ruin, but the thoughtful addition of a walkway allows you to walk a full circuit around the castle walls.

The information inside the castle is minimal, but there is a guidebook that you can puchase in the shop if you want to read up on the history.

We (me, my husband, my 2 young children and their grandparents) were lucky enough to visit on a beautiful sunny day. After looking round the castle and walking round the moat, it was a pleasant place to simply sit and enjoy the fantastic weather and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside (sound of lambs bleating and the excitement of seeing the trains going along the line a few miles away provided at no extra cost!), while the children had a run around on the grass.

We ended the afternoon with ice creams from the shop (which also sells hot drinks and a range of the usual English Heritage books, toys and souveniers).

I only marked this down to a 4 as part of me feels there is more that English Heritage could do with this setting.

“A classic small castle, ideal for children”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

This little castle on a hill overlooking the River Fowey is the sort that children can relate to in scale. You can walk around the top of the ramparts, peer out of the slot windows & see the well. It's an English Heritage site so ideal if you're a member. Slightly expensive if not as an hour or so is probably enough.

“Nice walk around castle ruins.”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

We visited this castle in October,it is managed by English Heritage.
The castle is surrounded by what would have been a moat. Both the inner and outer walls are almost intact.
As you enter each room, there are information boards explaining about the room and giving images of what it may have looked like.
There are solid steps with good handrails leading up to a walkway that goes around the top walls of the castle,we got good views of the surrounding area and countryside.
The small shop sells the guide book for the castle which give more information.
There was ample parking and toilets available.
Although it does not take long to look around,it is a nice place to visit if you are in the area.

“Best castle to visit in Cornwall”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

Restmomel castle is a gem, circular with the inner and outer walls almost fully intact. Very well preserved by English Heritage and well worth a visit. You can walk all round the higher wall, with lovely views from all sides. Good board guides where necessary and safe steps with handrails. Plus a good guide to buy, full of history. Highly recommended
