Sandy and Gary have created something utterly wonderful at The Hen House and I urge anyone who values peace, beauty and great company (humans as well as dogs) to make a visit. My wife Barbara and I have just enjoyed a magical holiday at the Hen House. We were made so welcome by Sandy and Gary who catered for our needs splendidly and were obviously keen to share this piece of paradise with us. They are very knowledgeable about the area and gave us very good advice on cool walks, fabulous cycle rides, the best places to swim and great places to eat. In fact, there is so much that is beautiful to see and enjoy that we have already booked a fortnight there next year. Can't wait to go back; the relaxing and energising Tai Chi, the delicious breakfasts, the company of friendly dogs(Monza the resident and visitors: Pip, Meg, Zep, Seal and Lanceolot) and like-minded people. A very special place. Thank you.

Very reluctant, like a previous reviewer, to share this. First time of taking a holiday with our Rough Collie Megs and we certainly hit the jackpot. An absolutely perfect place to stay - Meggie was made so very welcome and had a great time chasing around with Sandy and Gary's lovely retriever Monza. A totally safe environment for dogs and a perfectly tranquil place for humans. Breakfast was superb and enjoyed after early morning tai chi for my husband whilst I enjoyed a leisurely shower in the large en-suite shower room. I am a vegetarian whilst the other half eats fish but no meat but we were very well catered for. The weather was great whilst we were there so we were able to relax in the courtyard garden with no pressure to move off. Lovely quiet area to explore and the owners are very helpful in recommending places to visit and places to eat. Only arrived home yesterday but I want to go back soon! Thank you.

My wife and I wanted a short weeks break with our dog Lilly, a place with great walks and lots of peace and tranquility. Well we hit the jackpot here...what a wonderful, down to earth, grass roots place to stay and relax.
I am reluctant writing this as I don't want to share this place with others, but on the other hand, feel we would be do our wonderful hosts a dis-service.
We were made at home on arrival, with a pot of tea in the garden followed by a complete run down on the area from our hosts, Sandy even gave us top tips on places to eat locally. Everything about the henhouse is dog friendly and we as a family will be regulars!! Having already booked the next break. Please note this location is all about peace, nature, walking and finding yourself again, it is not suited to young families or those looking for the nightlife...however the five pilchards in porthallow does a brilliant selection of ales and top class food and you earn it with a brisk 2 mile walk up and down hilltops to get there and the back:-) plus a good war story with some of the local characters on a Thursday evening.
To note I really love this place, you won't be disappointed :-) the henhouse is a must for those after peace and tranquility.

On the face of it, being allocated the "old pig shed" doesn't sound a great option, however, once you enter the accommodation you find a pleasantly appointed bedroom/en suite, the crowning glory of which is the "Velux" roof light, allowing you to lie in bed and watch the stars and satellites, in a big sky, without the light pollution usually found in big cities. We could not have been made more welcome by our hosts, Sandy and Gary, along with Monza the "Chicken Herding" Golden Retriever. For those wishing for total peace and quiet this accommodation cannot be more highly praised.

After a great night's sleep, you will be totally set up for the day with a beautifully, freshly cooked large breakfast, meaning you will not need to eat again until your evening meal. Those more adventurous may enjoy a free session of Tchai in the field, weather permitting before breakfast.

The Hen House at Tregarne

My wife and I and our dog Archie had a wonderful week at the Hen House at Tregarn in Cornwall this summer.
This hideaway is the’ best kept secret’, especially for those of us who like to get off the tread mill and relax with their dogs. And guess what? There are no children allowed under the age of 12 to disturb the peace!!
The Hen House has two self-contained barns with kitchen and bathroom, which are separate from the main house and a self-contained room just below the main house; all of which are individually designed, and extremely comfortable.
If you’re staying B&B in Puno or Mopani you can have breakfast in the conservatory. A full ‘Cornish’, local smoked fish or a continental plate, cooked by Gary, and served up by Sandy. They use all local produce where possible including the freshest of eggs from their own hens (we’ve never seen yolks so yellow), and home-made bread and jams.
Monza, Gary and Sandy’s gorgeous young golden retriever, who is full of fun and a real sweetheart, will greet you on arrival. By the end of your stay you will have a friend for life – but watch out for your biscuits!! There is a courtyard, and a large meadow for your dogs to run and enjoy themselves which is totally enclosed, and secure.
On arrival a big pot of tea and home cake is produced to sooth the weary traveller. Gary and Sandy will provide all the local information you require (dog friendly pubs, walks, attractions and the best beaches) plus they have maps and books which you can borrow. Gary will impart his knowledge on the best Cornish Pasties to try (we’ve tried most of them now), and where to find the best Cornish Cream Teas.
They can also give advice on how to relax and find your inner self. There is a stone circle in the meadow where you can sit; all you can hear is the rustle of the leaves on the trees and the birds singing – so peaceful, the rat-race doesn’t exist here.
Usually one night during your stay, Gary will light the chimenea in the courtyard for guests to get together and talk the night away. As there is no light pollution at the Hen House, star gazing on a clear night is a thing of wonder – look out for the Milky Way, shooting stars, and the satellite going over. If you’re really lucky, Gary may bring out the home made cider – very morish, but don’t underestimate its potency!!
This is a truly magical place where you can just let the world pass you by, and you can relax with your best friend - your dog!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are exellent, with a rustic feel to them

We arrived late, in the dark, so The Hen House was a little difficult to find, though helpful directions had been given to us. We had a good size room with a very comfortable bed and also a sofa to relax on. Breakfasts were excellent, including homemade bread. Gary and Sandy were great hosts, full of good ideas for the days and weather.

I'm in agreement with all the positive comments provided earlier, though I can add a couple of things that may help some future guests. Given the age of the main house/barn, ceilings are very low. I found this particularly so in the bathroom. There is also a lack of soundproofing so we could hear our hosts every time they walked across their floor, our ceiling.

The positive aspects far out way these concerns and we would go again.

Room Tip: Probably best to stay away from the main house in one of the barns.

This Ofsted school inspector booked a 7am breakfast (very unusual for here!) whilst her husband booked his breakfast an hour and a half later (again, quite uncommon). It is possible he heard our footfall in the kitchen as we prepared and served his wife's breakfast whilst he laid in bed.
The head room is 6 foot 4 inches in both the bedroom and the bathroom as it is the ground floor of a converted barn with stable door opening on to the garden.
We have had no other complaints about the height of the ceiling in the last 10 years in fact this room is often requested by repeat guests as it is so spacious.

This is a tucked away, peaceful and relaxing spot. it is beautifully managed and the owners are extremely kind and helpful. My brother and I satyed here for 4 days and found it to be a great place to explore the area, everything being close by and with the added bonus of drives through the narrow, wild flower covered lanes.

We couldn't have asked or wanted more. My dog was made very welcome to, which only other dog lovers, as the Pulfrey's are, would appreciated.
