“Nearly Nirvana”
Reviewed 24 March 2013

We have just had such a wonderful break at this hotel with friends.
From the welcome to the farewell, it was just so very special. All the staff seem to genuinely care about their guests and are friendly but professional.

The hotel is in such a beautiful location , high on the cliff overlooking the sea, and it was lovely hearing the sound of the waves. Easy for walking along the cliff path too. The layout of the building seems to make the most of the location and the views.

The food is excellent, as is the wine list and the service from the staff superb.

We really enjoyed the hot tub and the indoor swimming pool which is not chlorinated. The hotel is very eco conscious which gives an added dimension to being there.

The toiletries are lovely and so are the rooms. My only regret is that the bed , although extremely comfortable was a double bed, and we are used to sleeping in a king sized one, but this did not mar our stay and we will certainly be going back there.

We stayed at The Scarlet for 5 nights from 17 March. It is in a beautiful location with excellent coastal walks and scenery - you can even borrow the hotel dog to take with you on a walk. We were in a "just right" room which was very comfortable with lovely views over the beach. The bath and bedroom are one room with the wc and shower screened off. You can lie in bed and watch the surfers on the beach or sit on your private balcony and look out to sea. There are no tea making facilities in the rooms but you can order two complimentary tea/coffee servings each day. Fresh bottled water is provided in the room each day. The restaurant is excellent as is the bar food. There is an extensive vegetarian menu as well as a meaty one. The hot chocolate is scrummy. The spa area has a great chlorine-free pool which looks out to sea as well as a steam room and relaxation room with beds and beanbags and hanging pods. We did the outdoor seaweed hottub experience which was half an hour in a warm tub on the deck looking out over the beach. The hottub host brings robes, towels and drinks to you during your hot tub session - it's great. We tried out the Wild Cafe at the sister hotel Bedruthan nearby, which whilst was the food was nice was full of young families, in fact we were the only diners there without a baby. The Scarlet is great in that it's for adults only. There is no mobile phone signal at the Scarlet but it comes back when you go down to the beach. There is free wifi in the hotel and a computer for guest use in the lounge. The staff are great - very helpful and friendly. We had a very relaxing week here and will be returning sometime soon.

Room Tip: The garden view "just right" rooms look out over the garden to the beach and are very quie...

We've been lucky enough to visit the Scarlet for the 3rd time and once again it doesn't disappoint by way of setting and style.
Its a beautiful hotel with lovely rooms and views. its a great place to get away from it all. My only slight critic would be the food, I just don't love it but I'm sure lots of people do. The menu never hits the mark for me, but its OK. I must say the tart for sharing for pud is delicious.
We tried a hot tub this time on the cliff edge which was wonderful and relaxing.
We also went to Jamie Olivers on one night which was wonderful. The risotto was amazing and the service wonderful.
We would recommend and be going to the Scarlett again.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful and so very different.

Just like everyone else seems to, we loved this place. So perfect for a babymoon if you're at the stage I am and want to be somewhere so beautiful that you don't need to go elsewhere. The staff are lovely (no stuffy London 5* service here, just genuinely friendly nice people- either great training or they're very picky with who they employ), views are to die for, spa treatments top notch (we had a full journey each and I had a fantastic seaweed facial) and food amazing (make sure to book as part of your package to save a little on their 3 course dinner prices). Relaxation areas are beautiful, and even though it's almost always fully booked there's so many areas to choose from you're never on top of each other. We had the pool to ourselves a couple of times too - bliss! We took Jaspar, their very friendly but strong-willed dog out for a walk, and he took us up the path to the right of the hotel which lead to a lovely National Trust tearoom on a gloriously sunny day. He sat patiently whilst we ate before he walked us back home. We loved the touch that you can take him out, which is just as thoughtful as everything else this hotel do.

Room-wise, we swapped between 2 rooms on our stay (through choice, booking ahead). We treated ourselves to a Spacious room (12) for one night and then went into a Just Right (26). The Spacious really was just that - huge bed, lovely sofa to relax on, big terrace, but we were disappointed that people could look into our room if they were stood outside (you want to lie on your bed and enjoy the view, but it doesn't have the same feel when somewhere can look straight at you) and our view was a little obscured by the roof garden to the left and glass walls of the pool to the right. We also didn't like the footsteps we could hear above us. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful, but I'd go for a top floor if I paid extra for a Spacious again, or would simple stay in our perfectly-formed Just Right - unobscured views, nobody above you to make noise and complete privacy when lying in your bed or stood behind the bathroom divider.

We always umm and ahh before spending this kind of money on somewhere, but we really felt this place was worth every penny we spent on it. They deserve to continue to do well.

Room Tip: Choose your Just Right room carefully, and you'll be getting something just as good, if not bett...

What a lovely review! Thank you! I laughed out loud at the part where Jasper took you both for a walk to a tea room! I wonder if he likes the scones there - they can't be as good as ours!? I have passed on your kind comments about our staff to the teams themselves.

It seems almost superfluous to add a review to the long, long list already on Trip Advisor about The Scarlet. However, I was pleased to note that the Manager makes the effort to leave a comment on each, so here are our thoughts.
As the price is steep (well, to a retired pensioner, it is...) I expected high standards, and wasn't disappointed. I echo everything that has been said here- the whole place oozes tranquility & serenity. Only minor points to add:
-No beverage tray is provided in the bedrooms. Tea/coffee is promptly brought whenever required, but sometimes if one fancies a drink in the middle of the night, it would seem churlish to disturb the staff. Also, a tray allows a little more personal autonomy.
-The wrong starter was brought to my partner at dinner on the first night- I think the waitress was genuinely confused, and we didn't make a fuss, but it wasn't exactly what we wanted.
-On the second night, my partner ordered tomato soup. It arrived and was plonked down on the table without comment, whereas the chap on the next table was exhorted to "enjoy his meal". After a moment, we realised there was no spoon. We asked for a spoon to be brought, but by the time it arrived- a good few minutes- the soup was cold & had to be replaced. To be fair, we did receive an apology, but it did spoil the moment a little.
-The "Just Right" rooms were plenty big enough. I would have appreciated a wall hook- after swimming, wet costumes along with towelling robes & towels left almost no room on the radiator, and the towels got a little damp.
A spin dryer in the changing rooms would have helped and there were no bags provided in the changing area for wet costumes. We were given plastic bags on request but they were flimsy.
The outdoor pool was also a tad scummy on the surface- a little offputting. But much applause for keeping on top of seagulls using the pool for target practice!
However, one thing that really struck me was how much the staff appear to enjoy their jobs, and feel very well-treated by their employers. It showed especially in that when small matters were raised, we had the impression that staff really cared about getting things right- such a welcome change to other institutions! I hope you don't mind these comments- overall, we were really impressed & hope to return as soon as feasible.

This was our second time at The Scarlet and it was just as magical as the first, if not better. We got a 'Generous Room' again that truly is wonderful. Love the decor! I don't often enjoy hotel stays as they don't feel like home but I would most certainly consider moving in if I could to this hotel!! The view is just incredible, the room is perfection, the staff are wonderful and so is the location. What really impressed us this time around was being presented with a vegan menu! Being vegan you get used to having food adapted for you which often ends up being pretty much tasteless and unimaginative. But no, The Scarlet have a vegan menu! Amazing :) I would 100 percent recommend this hotel and wish that more hotels would be like this one. Thank you everyone at the Scarlet for making our stay so special, we cannot wait to return!

Everything about our 2 night stay was perfect. The room and views are spectacular. The restaurant and service is wonderful. The staff are smiley and helpful. The decor and artwork are imaginative and the Spa has a very relaxing atmosphere. We were glad it was rather chilly outside, so that we could spend more time in the Hotel! We'll be back and will definitely recommend The Scarlet to our friends and family.
