“So much potential - let down by unrenovated room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2013 via mobile

My friend and I booked two nights at the Bedruthan based primarily on its website - the photos showed a modern, stylish and funky hotel with great facilities and an excellent location.

The location was wonderful - beautiful views of the Cornish coast, but we were slightly disappointed overall. Service was good, as was the food in The Wild Cafe (both dinner and breakfast). The Spa was good too, spoilt for us though by several big and noisy groups who happened to be using it when we were (not the hotel's fault). However, our main disappointment was the room. It was unrenovated and definitely nothing like the photos of the rooms we'd seen online, nor in keeping with the stylish communal areas of the property. It was plain and dated, and was really no different from a Travelodge. Such a shame!

We spoke to a very polite and helpful member of staff on reception, who told us she would feed back our comments to the management. Unfortunately no one got in touch with us until we checked out, and when they did, they just said that the website says that the hotel is undergoing renovation. This, I suppose, was supposed to infer that the room may not reflect the photos. There was no offer of a discount or some incentive to return which was very disappointing. We had certainly not been aware of the renovation work before booking (and neither did we see any other rooms that had not yet been upgraded), so we advised that they probably ought to make it clearer on their website - especially when the manager said we weren't the first people to complain about this!

So overall, Bedruthan is a lovely hotel and I would recommend it, but be aware that your room may not be as stylish as the rest of the hotel!

Coming from the Fowey Hall Hotel our first impressions were a bit underwhelming, but once you get past the front entrance everything is fantastic. We loved everything about it. We had a large apartment with a wonderful view. With kids aged 14 to 7 we were worried that it would be too young for our kids. But it wasn't. The facilities for them to just muck about were great. The staff in their relaxed uniforms were constantly on hand and universal delightful. The more relaxed vibe is perfect for a family holiday. Other people in our party had rooms overlooking the car park and it definitely takes away part of the pleasure.

Room Tip: With a family of six, the large apartment is brilliant. A proper living room to chill out.

My partner and I stayed here for 1 night (we stay in a lot of hotels for work) and are a young ish couple. We felt very out of place here as we didn't have children! The whole hotel is geared up for families and not couples. To the extreme that the shower temperature was cool at its hottest setting, no locks on doors and the smallest bath!!! No toiletries in the room- just a soap bar which isn't really ideal, especially if you are travelling light for work. We found it wasn't very clear to find the spa/ red herring restaurant, toilets etc. as not very well sign posted but none the less spa was nice although no one to show us round or point us in the right direction! Staff were not particularly helpful, just wanted to chat! However we ate in the herring restaurant and food was lovely and room was a good size!

I came as a day visitor on the spa and dine offer two weeks ago with 6 girlfriends, we were really looking forward to a ice chilled evening relaxing in the spa area followed by dinner.

Not the case!!! We arrived and started our eveing in the spa which was great with fantastic views and really relaxing until you start getting pestered by the staff to vacate. We were reminded by the lady in the spa that it was 7.50 and would need to start getting changed followed by the hotel porter who who came along 2 minutes later and stood gard over us untill we left the spa area.

On arrival at the wilde cafe for dinner we were seated by a really lovely girl (sorry dont know name) who gave us menus etc. We had to ask about 10 - 15 minutes later if we could have our glass of bubbles only to be told they were looking for glasses as they didnt have enough for us all. After about 30 minutes of waiting we asked if we could order and was told we would have to wait for someone else to come to us, they lady who did finally come and take our order was inexperienced and didnt know the menu so had to go and ask for answers to our questions. After another long wait we go our starters which were ok but not that great, again another long wait for our main course which was barely warm. I ordered the stead s/w which on arrival was mostly fat and not that "warm". Not one finished dinner from our table!

I did email the hotel to inform them of our evening but so far no reply from them, not great customer service.

Wouldnt recommend this hotel to anyone sadly.

We had a 1wk stay at the hotel mid August. We had a sea view, whereby the view was affected by the roof of the bar/restaurant area below, it meant we saw more flat roof than beach/sea. We did ask to move but the hotel was full. It didn't affect our stay, it just wasn't the most stunning view.

The breakfasts were fabulous with everything locally sourced. The hot food was replenished regularly and to a very high standard. Plenty of choice and brilliant providing fresh apple purée for babies and toddlers - I'm not a huge jar/pouch fan so this was a great idea. The supply of baby equipment such as bibs, spoons etc was fantastic. The staff at breakfast were very friendly and attentive. Only downside would be the need to clean under tables more between diners.

We were on a b&b basis so only ate in the wild cafe for dinner once, this was on the first night. The food was just ok, the prices were high and we found the restaurant to look a tad grubby, which considering we were there at 6pm seemed odd. A quick subtle dust busting session in between diners would be beneficial. We may have children but still have high standards and don't like having to pick peas from the bottom of our shoes as we leave.

The decor is funky, vibrant and fun, one point to make is that the dining area needs furniture which will withstand children and accidents. Using fabrics that can't be washed or wiped is not suitable when you have a large volume of children visiting. Some of the chairs and booth benches are dirty and worn - leather, vinyl or plastic would work really well in this room, which would be better suited to the spillages, accidents and wear and tear with children. Just because we have children doesn't mean we wish to accept sitting on a chair covered in stains. With the current decor it would be very easy to have funky plastic seating or leather.

The pool area is fabulous. We felt like we were abroad with the colourful plants and beautiful weather we had. The children had a fabulous time in the pool. The only disappointment was the lack of sun beds/seating. In peak season there probably needs to be extra sun beds or benches available for parents.

Lunch choices in the cafe by the pool also needs t be reviewed, there wasn't a great deal of choice. The salad bar was however interesting and delicious and a nice change from other salad bars whereb you get cucumber and tomatoes. The one you offer is fab.

Our girls had a fabulous holiday. For them the pools, play areas, games room, soft play and being near the beach, made their week perfect. The hotel has really thought of everything to keep the children entertained. The evening entertainment was also fabulous, we were able to enjoy a glass of wine while the girls were busy dancing or learning about animals. This was bliss for us and something the girls still talk abut. No complaint from our children and they would love to come back.

Room Tip: Level 1 which is above the restaurant and bar is to be avoided. Not quite sea view.

It is hard to equate some of the negative comments in other reviews with our experience of Bedruthan. This was our third visit, this time for the last week of August whereas previously we have gone in May/June, and it was absolutely fantastic. Responding to a few comments below: scrambled, poached or boiled eggs are not charged extra at breakfast, you simply have to ask and they will be freshly prepared for you. The only breakfast food items with extra charges are pancakes (which I must say are slightly pricey at £2.50!), smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, and kippers; freshly squeezed orange juice is also an extra but they explain that this is because they want people to enjoy local produce which is why they provide the lovely local apple juice instead. Food overall very good indeed, and some truly exceptional dishes in both the Wild Cafe and the Herring.

I can't comment on the rooms without a sea view because we have always booked the sea view ones which are lovely, and many of which have been redecorated since our last visit. Plentiful soap and an interesting shampoo bar are provided, and we find the standards of cleanliness and housekeeping exemplary.

The food package: I would agree that this could do with a slightly clearer preliminary explanation as to what is and isn't included but overall I would say it is genuinely flexible and worked very well for us as a family. Baby listening: we have now stayed a total of 18 nights at the hotel and it has worked perfectly every single night.

The entertainment is particularly geared for younger children but our seven-year old still enjoys it, as does the three-year old, and the clubs are well run if you want to use them, albeit for the morning ones at an extra price. Pool furniture seemed fine to me and given we spent hours each day there thanks to the lovely weather I would have noticed if it was uncomfortable. And the service at the poolside bar was good too.

So my overall comment would be that there are always going to be dissatisfied customers at any hotel but from the number of people we met who were on the fifth, sixth or even seventh visit there are clearly far more who love it, and, like us, having returned last night are already looking forward to next year's visit to Bedruthan.

Room Tip: For us a seaview is essential, the rooms are larger and the view is wonderful. If possible ask for...

We have recently returned from 8 nights here and we thoought it was a great place to go with young (7 and nearly 2) children and it exceeded our expectations. The weather was really good most of the time we were there which of course helps but the facilities and kids' activities were spot on and the location / views were amazing anyway. Like anywhere it's not perfect and some small things can be improved -e.g. the rules of the flexible dining package were rather opaque to my mind (e.g. hot drinks all day were supposed to be covered by the package but when I had a coffee with my lunch I was told that it wasn't covered by the package) and, unlike the name of the package, rather inflexible - perhaps the hotel could look at these again before we come again, which we fully intend to do. Incidentally, is there another hotel of the same name with which this one is being confused, as the several recent one star ratings are unfathomable to me....

Room Tip: Get a sea view room if you can - stunning views!
