“Thoughtful touches make this a special hotel”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Bedruthan staff work really hard to make holidays at their hotel special. They are all genuinely friendly and helpful. The hotel is perfectly situated overlooking a beautiful sandy bay. The food is amazing at Wild cafe with a varied choice of specials (sometimes a little overpriced) and a la carte offer (much better value).
Bedruthan offers luxury and relaxation; it's not cheap but you feel special. They are very well suited to looking after young children (crèche and kids clubs) but perhaps could be cleverer at adapting their offer to teenagers For example they could open up adult only areas (like the bar terrace or hydro spa ) to over 12s if accompanied by parents. Our two teenagers enjoyed surf school and learnt quickly how to get up on a board.

As others have said the outside appearance isnt aesthetically great. Fortunately we had already seen such reviews before hand so we were prepared.

Once inside though, the place is great.

We went as a family (with an almost two year old). Sadly we didnt get to take advantage of the baby listening service, or the crech facility (or the adult only bars/dining). But that was partly personal choice / mostly babies choice.

But the facilities for children (of various ages) were superb. From indoor soft play, to outdoor park, out door wendy house, football pitch, tennis court, swimming pools etc etc.

The Wild Cafe area served a superb breakfast. It was geared up perfectly for little ones (including child friendly cuttlery and plates etc). The staff throughout the hotel were always very attentive and helpful. We found them all happy to engage the little ones too.

The staff in the Wild Cafe probably deserve extra praise though. The mess that one baby/toddler can make is amazing - yet they have to tolerate (and clean up afterwards) all of us. Never once did we feel we were putting anyone out. They were also all too happy to assist with any ad hoc requests/requirements (no ask was ever declined).

Whilst all this review is child-centric, our view was that it would still be ideal for adults. There are plenty of provisions made to make avoiding them possible.

One small gripe would be the adult food in the Wild Cafe. We were kindly accomodated to eat at the same time as our child (i think officially adult dining started an hour later). But we werent that impressed with the food. And it wasnt overly cheap either (from memory about £12 for a burger and chips). We only ate in there once (aside from breakfast... which was exceptional).

All in all... we would definitely stay there again a) for the hotel itself b) its location (Padstow 15mins away, St Ives and Eden Project maybe 40mins and Bedruthan steps about 5 minutes down the road). There's also a beach 5 minute drive away.

My partner and I took advantage of a Facebook offer which alllowed us one night's stay with a 3-course meal and prosecco and chocolates on arrival for £140. We were also able to use the spa facilities all day the following day.

We felt relaxed from the minute we arrived even though it was during a storm, driving rain and thunder and lightening. We sat in front of the window of our sea-view room and watched the storm brewing over the sea drinking our prosecco which was amazing.

We went down for dinner to the Herring Restaurant and enjoyed a fantastic 3-course meal. The cheese board and chateaubriand were particularly good. The breakfast included all locally sourced ingredients and they put the couples and the families in separate areas of the restaurant which I thought was very good.

The spa facilities are great, we particularly enjoed the hydropool which looks out over the sea.

A one night stay left us feeling very relaxed and as if we'd been away for longer.

My wife and I booked a mini spa break break at the Bedruthan as a special treat to ourselves just before our second lovely little one arrives, to relax and unwind for a couple of days.

For the most part the stay was very enjoyable and relaxing, however there are a few issues that let it down a bit for us.

The Spa was absolutely brilliant, the therapists were lovely, the facilities impressive, clean and not too busy. We relaxed for hours here and enjoyed every second. 10 out of 10.

The hotel has many activities and facilities which were all clean and well maintained, again top drawer.

The quality of the food on the whole was very good, especially breakfast. The Wild Cafe had a really nice chilled atmosphere with great views, however one of our issues was the service. The staff were polite and helpful but really lacked in attention to detail mainly down to the fact there were so many tables to serve, small things like forgetting items we had asked for and not being very knowledgeable about the food and info for allergy sufferers. We booked a table in the restaurant based on some dishes on the menu advertised in the restaurant during the afternoon only to find when we arrived that evening the menu had changed and the items we wanted were gone.

The room was by far the biggest let down for us. We did only have the standard room, however as standard I would still expect a good quality mattress/pillows and air conditioning. The mattress and pillows were really not very comfortable and the room was so unbearably hot that we hardly slept all night. We would have kept the window open but outside our window was a large fan or refrigerator unit which made a loud whirring constantly, therefore we were forced to boil. Our reply from reception regarding the heat of the room was, "it has been really warm the last couple of days hasn't it!", it's only May, not the height of July/August! Come on Bedruthan, loosen the purse strings - even the budget chain hotels have decent mattresses and air con these days! Other than these issues the room was tidy, clean and well presented with a nice bathroom.

The location is great with stunning views over Mawgan Porth and only a short walk down to the beach and village. Mawgan Porth still has a really nice "proper rural Cornwall" feeling that you don't get in the likes of Newquay.

In summary I feel that this hotel is a good mattress and air con away from a 5 star review.

Room Tip: Room 34 has a noisy fan/refrigerator unit outside the window so couldn't have the window open.

Have just returned from a fabulous stay at this hotel. Went for a short spa break. The hotel is superb, really 'top notch'
The hotel is situated overlooking the beach, the views are stunning. Full advantage has been taken of this position with the restaurants, bars, spa all overlooking the view.
Several previous reviews recommend upgrading your room to a sea view. I don't think this is really necessary - if you are going for a romantic break then a sea view would put the icing on the cake but the rooms are all of the same high standard.

The food in the restaurant was excellent.
We found the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble.

The only slight disappointment was the temperature of the Jacuzzi which was cool, otherwise the spa area is clean, large, and offers all facilities. The treatments are of a high standard.

I can definitely recommend this hotel and spa and hope to return soon.

Usually when you book a single room you get a dingy cupboard under the stairs but this I was delighted to find was not the case at Bedruthan Steps. A lovely bright room overlooking the tennis courts and hills beyond. The staff were so friendly but at the same time efficient and helpful. I will definitely return to this hotel and would recommend it to anyone.
