Amazing holiday - exceeded expectations. We loved every minute of the stay. The staff couldn't do enough for us and we felt very well looked after. Great facilities. We are already planning another visit!

Upon approaching the hotel it looks a little drab from the outside, however, the inside is superior, beautiful rooms, lovely colour schemes and plenty of space. The rooms have quality complimentary toiletries, fan, cotton wall balls etc. The facilities here are outstanding......the spa is superb, there are outdoor and indoor pools. Around the outdoor pool are loungers, pods in the shade....however, the young lady who sat by the pool in full make up and black dress would never be recognised as the lifeguard.......when she decided to leave she turned the sign around to say the pool would be closed for 3 hours. Everyone ignored the sign and continued to use the pool and Jacuzzi! The food is of a good quality, however, the cooked breakfast items were luke warm at best. Now we come to the staff.....breakfast staff although very friendly were extremely slow.....after asking for toast 3 times and waiting over 20 minutes we decided to give up. The young ladies on reception were extremely friendly and helpful.....I ordered a newspaper for the following morning which did not appear, when I queried this the receptionist apologised and asked if I would like a member of staff to go to the shop for me!! The bar staff downstairs had a pretty terrible attitude.....bored, almost too much trouble to serve you. However, Paul, the barman who served us upstairs had a fantastic personality, brilliant service, so helpful.

The best thing about the hotel however, is the location, superb, wonderful views, lovely walk down to a sandy bay, a couple of local shops, the best fish and chip shop ever.

Firstly the good things: stunning views, exceptionally lovely and helpful staff - they couldn't do enough for us, amazing bar tender who produced the most exquisite cocktails we have ever tasted, lovely swimming pools, good play areas for children. Now for the bad and why I won't be returning. We chose a Large Sea View Villa which in my opinion was very dated and dirty. The throw over the bed was filthy for starters, not sure it had been washed for several years. The carpets stained, the dust and dirt down the side of the bunk beds pretty harrowing! The bathroom was large and served its purpose. The TV was tuned in for German channels - but this was soon sorted for us. The fridge was tiny and could hold about 1 bottle of water. The kettle was so old I was nervous to use it for fear it might blow up. Curtains, heavy and depressing. The lack of air con was really noted - we were fortunate to be there in the warm weather and the rooms were like sauna's and made it impossible to sleep in. They supplied 1 very old fan which didn't work. The duvets were like large thick slabs of foam. So hot and uncomfortable. The furniture was all heavy brown and made the room very depressing. The small terrace area outside had 2 old plastic sun loungers and the tiles were cracked and they'd put cones on these to avoid any accidents. When you're paying £315/night you'd expect more. Also the room was never properly cleaned, nor sheets/towels changed whilst we were there. Infact I had to ask twice for someone to go and make up our room. Perhaps we were unlucky booking one of the sea villas but based on reviews on this website thought we were doing the right thing ! Perhaps there are better rooms available in the hotel ?

The main restaurant served excellent breakfast, but lunch became repetitive and the salads weren't up to much, the menu didn't really change apart from the odd special on the board each day. The children's tea was disappointing - they didn't really serve anything particularly nutritious looking or inspiring. The dinner menu was the same as lunch so it all got a bit boring to be honest. Then the Herring (the fancy restaurant) kept the same 'seasonal' menu for 3 months, so if you're staying for 5 days as we did you will only visit once for lack of choice on the menu. The one time we did eat there the food was excellent.

The free afternoon creche doesn't really work if you've got younger kids who like to sleep in the afternoon. The free slot is 1.30 to 3.30pm It worked for us one day when we had late lunch but otherwise wasn't that helpful. We paid for a couple of morning sessions and that was great, but I felt guilty leaving my kids there when it was glorious weather outside and they were stuck indoors (they have a small outside play area) but didn't really look that much.

We wanted to use the SPA but of course by the time we got around to booking it there were no available appointments!

My last moan is that it was about a 10 minute walk from our room to the restaurant and lugging around a heavy 10 month old and 3 year old it just got too much. My back hurt and I decided next time I'm going to rent a holiday cottage and take a nanny ! Far more civilised and a lot cheaper than this place !! Such a shame as they've got the right idea but it's let down on so many levels.

JanieWhite, Manager at Bedruthan Hotel & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded 4 July 2014

Thank you for taking the time to let us have your feedback following your recent stay. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t feel we lived up to your expectations we will, of course, review all of the points that you have mentioned so that we can maintain the very high standards that we set ourselves. We would really like to be able to discuss this matter with you directly so that we can make sure we extend our service and resolve things. We have sent you a private message and hope that you feel able to respond. It’s great to hear that there were several aspects of the hotel that you really enjoyed although I was surprised to hear that your room was not as you expected. The Large Villas are some of the most popular rooms that we have, they are praised for their space and the direct access to the children’s play area. Whilst these rooms haven’t yet been refurbished we feel that they are tastefully decorated and the soft furnishing are cleaned regularly to maintain the quality. Our normal procedures see that all of our rooms are inspected before our new guests arrive, our housekeeping department have reviewed all villas following your comments to make sure that they are all ready for a busy summer. We are really proud of our sustainable approach to hospitality and in line with this philosophy we have elected to supply cool-boxes in the bedroom rather than full fridges. They are still able to keep small amounts of food chilled including the fresh milk that is provided daily for tea and coffee, likewise we don’t have air conditioning in the bedrooms, when the hotel was built this service was not standard within the industry and we feel that we are able to supply light bedding and fans to accommodate the few weeks when the UK is warmer, our team at the hotel are well trained in assisting with this are only too happy to help. We will always happily change towels and bedding but we do ask to be led by our guests, we just need the towels to be in the bath and the card requesting linen change to be on the bed.

We are really proud of our cracking Cornish breakfast, its great to hear that you enjoyed that. Our Wild Café provides a fixed everyday menu and we have a series of specials where we hope to change three on a daily basis during lunchtime and our evening specials have four starters, four main courses and four desserts that change daily depending on what fresh produce we can get form our local suppliers. These are available from 6pm. Our children’s teas menu has been developed through guest feedback and our chefs wanting to provide a balanced choice for parents so that home cooked food and treats are incorporated in the main dinner menu and the buffet snack and dessert area. Our Herring Menu has just launched on the 17th June and will be consistent over the summer but the specials will be available in addition too to add some variety.

I’m sorry to hear that the free afternoon session didn’t work you, our dedicated childcare team are more than happy to look after sleeping babies if it means that you get some me time. There is also the added benefit that when they wake up they can make some new little friends too.

We try to have a delicate balance between family fun and adult relaxation and our Spa provides a great experience to do that but we do advise booking early as we only have four treatment rooms for you to relax in.

I hope that we can resolve these matters for you so that Bedruthan can be part of your families holidays again in the future.

Just back from our 3rd week long stay with our 3 year old. Fantastic setting, friendly staff and superb facilities. The setting and location make it easy to find plenty to do and the excellent baby listening service means you can schedule grown-up evenings eating and drinking delicious things in gorgeous surroundings too! The only thing that's less than perfect is the occasional "over relaxed" approach of some of the less experienced waiting staff. This means you have to chase things you've ordered and/or wait ages for them to arrive. Not a deal breaker though. This is a top notch place and we will be returning.
