“A wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We have just spent an excellent week staying at Penarwyn House where the quality of accommodation was outstanding and the service was second to none. A lovely house beautifully restored by Mike and Jan. The decor and furnishings were superb and our room was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean with a luxurious bathroom. A genuinely friendly welcome plus home made cake!! Jan's breakfasts were wonderful, beautifully cooked and presented with a large choice. Mike was extremely informative about excellent restaurants and local places to visit, even down to which car park was best to use. He very kindly chauffered us to the Eden Project where we were attending a wedding and even offered to drive us back in the early hours if necessary. An added bonus was a full sized snooker table in a beautiful games room. A comfortable conservatory and lounge containing a piano which Mike invited guests to play. A truly unique experience - highly recommended. Thanks Jan and Mike!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are to an excellent standard -immaculate!!

This was my first trip to England and Cornwall, while visiting the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens. My stay at the Penarwyn House was fantastic! The hosts, Mike and Jan are personable and charming, and have a great deal of intricate and fasinating historical information not only on Penarwyn, but the surrounding villages as well. The rooms are exquisite, and ones immediate needs anticipated. It is difficult to say what was my most favorite experience, but I would have to choose between the breakfasts, which were delicious and full of variety and the private car tour of the area, which also made my trip to Cornwall's Penarwyn a personalized and fabulous adventure. I will definitely have to make a return trip.

An extremely welcoming, comfortable and friendly B&B, where nothing is too much trouble, from offering delicious specials for breakfast such as bercher muesli, porridge or pancakes, printing off directions to various locations, to providing lifts back from a local restaurant late in the evening when there are no taxis, or to the train station out of the goodness of their hearts.

A great location for the Eden project as well as many of the beautiful fishing ports along the south coast such as Fowey, Portloe, Polperro and Polruan, and a very easy drive (45 mins) to the north coast to Padstow, Port Issac and Port Quin.

We would highly recommend this B&B to anyone and we would definitely go back, not only to enjoy the comfortable bedroom and bathroom facilities but also to explore the rest of the beautiful surroundings that we sadly didn't have time for this time around!

My husband found this wonderful B&B so that we could visit the Eden project for a long weekend treat. Once we had arrived (don't rely on your satnav - use the map, it's well hidden) We were welcomed by Mike - with a cup of tea and home made cake and shown to our room. The house was built about 1820 and Jan and Mike have thought very carefully about its restoration and refurbishment - it is gorgeous. Very tasteful and elegant. The grounds are totally secluded, no traffic noise, no street lights and you will be woken by the birds singing happily in the garden. Make and Jan are wonderful hosts, breakfast is relaxed and beautifully cooked. And there are specials if you tell them the night before. We sampled the smoked haddock & poached eggs, and the pancakes with maple syrup/bacon. Just delightful. The rooms are huge, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The ensuite bathrooms are a real treat with free standing baths and seperate showers. If you like the 1920's style of decor - you are in for a real treat. The Eden project is less than 5 minutes (and Mike will tell you the secret way in). There are also some very very good restaurants near by - particularly Austells (see seperate report) which Mike and Jan have tried and tested. Nothing is too much trouble and Mike is so knowledgeable about the local history and places to go. Just delightful - we will be coming back.

Room Tip: The beds are very firm - if you like something softer - then let them know before you arrive I am su...

We thank you for your glowing review if we want to upgrade our advertising we could certainly use some of the comments you have made. It was a delight to meet you both thanks for your mention about the map and sat nav many is the time we have had a phone call and had to guide guests in because the map we send had not been printed. As to the mattresses they are a orthoflex memory foam good for backs, if needed (in the last year we have had 2 requests) we have mattress toppers.

This is our second visit to Penarwyn House, the first being for a long weekend and this for our 6 night honeymoon. We were welcomed with tea, coffee and a slice of homemade cake as is customary and shown to our suite to settle in. The rooms are large and beautifully decorated with stunning bathroom and facilities that you would find in any top hotel.
Mike and Jan are friendly and always happy to help having extensive local knowledge, this time they booked for us restaurants, taxis and tickets to the Eden project at a discounted price.
The breakfast menu is extensive with specials and a 'Cornish' breakfast that will fill you up for the day using locally sourced produce.
The only drawback is that you have to drive to find your day out from here and quality places to eat out are not within walking distance.
All in all a luxurious break which really makes you want to return. We will!

Congratulations on your wedding and your first Trip Advisor review, It was lovely to see you again on this your 2nd visit to us and to play our part in the start of your married life, it was wise of you to book the DeCressy suite of rooms as you did in June 2012, as the other guests staying at the same time as you all wanted to book the suite.
In reply to your comments re drawbacks and thank you for the opportunity for us to promote our position in Cornwall, we are as many guests say “an oasis tucked away in a village in the centre of Cornwall”. No matter where we were located Cornwall with it’s 3000plus square miles of beauty would mean that you would want to travel to experience what Cornwall has to offer and even living next door to the best restaurant guests would soon want a different choice of Menu. We are 1 ½ miles from Eden Project, The coastal footpath under 2 miles from us 5miles from Fowey, 8 from Lanhydrock, 11 from the Lost gardens of Helligan 14 from Looe and Polperrow and 24 from Padstow or Port Issac,. With St Michaels Mount Lands end And St Ives one of our day trip suggestions ( routes provided as mentioned in many other reviews) As to eating out we have the Britannia inn 1mile from us Austells for the finest of dining 2 ½ miles away Sams on the beach 3 ½ miles away and Fowey with all it’s pubs and restaurants 5 miles a 10min drive or £8 taxi fare and for those that want al fresco dinning we have the all-weather experience of the Eden Project evening dining in the Mediterranean Biome no admission charged for guests booking for meals after 1730hrs.

We have just had a fantastic stay at Penarwyn House. The decor is elegant, the breakfasts are amazing and Mike and Jan are the perfect hosts: friendly and attentive, but not intrusive, and nothing was too much trouble. I have a very difficult diet and they went out of their way to cater for me - and did so superbly. We felt thoroughly spoiled and look forward to returning some time!

We stayed in Treffry for three nights and didn't want to leave. Mike and Jan are very hospitable hosts and go out of their way to make you feel welcome, be it with a slice of cake or a lift to the station. We didn't have a car but Penarwyn House is about a 30-40 min walk to the Eden Project so well worth staying here if public transport is your only option.

The house is also very close to the station and a pleasant walk to the cost. From here we did a coastal walk round to Fowey which is a very quaint town indeed and recommended by us for its tea houses. The walk is about 5 miles or so and Mike can give directions. On our thrid day we visited Lanhydrock House near bodmin parkway. This is a 10 minute taxi ride away and the grounds are stunning. About 50 rooms are open to the public and the history is fascinating.

The rooms at the house are all huge and the breakfast is a good size with lots of options. The bathroom is the size of my living room (nearly) and we always came back to a warm house with fresh milk and biscuits waiting for us in the room. The house is also spotless and the bed very comfy indeed.

If you want some peace and quiet and one of the best guest house experiences you'll have, book Penarwyn House.
