Visited Wheal Tor today for sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday.. we were warmly welcomed, the birthday girl received a drink on the house, the table had been decorated with balloons and confetti, and the food was excellent.
Cosy bar, attentive staff, barman was a great character :)
Very enjoyable afternoon, topped by the landlady coming out unexpectedly with a birthday cake candle and singing.
Food very reasonable, views across the moors were amazing.. we will definitely return!

The views are stunning. But that's where it ended. New owners have inherited rooms that need a great deal of work.
Rooms very damp and cold. The shower did not have hot water. The cleanliness was way below expectations ie mould behind cabinets and bathroom floor dirty and bathroom Mirror not cleaned. The double bed was 2 singles pushed together and you could feel the springs. Had to lie on another blanket to feel more comfortable. The radiators did not work but was woken up at 6am with the water rushing through. The room set up was not ideal, there was a shaver point and light but no mirror to see what you were doing. Bedside cabinet had a clock and a lamp but only one plug so chose to use the lamp ! The door leading out to the rear was faulty so you could not use and I would guess this is a breach of fire regulations. The breakfast I have to say was wonderful. If it was not for the fact of new owners and feeling sorry that they had inherited such a lot of work to be done then we would not have paid to stay here. If booking ask first if they have carried out any refurbishment first. Beautiful location and this place could be a potential gold mine

Although I didnt stay here I must comment on their reaction to my cancellation. I had to cancel about 48 hours before my booking. My booking was made on the basis that if I cancelled within 5 days I had to pay £65. I was pleasantly surprised when they waived the cancellation fee. Thankyou

To be fair this hotel has been taken over by new management during the last 3 weeks, but we had made the booking on 30th March 2012 for 1 night on 15th June.
We needed 3 rooms; 1 a family room plus 2 doubles.
It is no mean fete to actually manage to locate this place so imagine our discontent on arrival, to be told they had over-booked, and although they had located alternative accommodation for two of us 1 mile away, they still had no family rooms.
We were offered a coffee as compensation but were not made to feel they were putting themselves out to accommodate us.
We had booked through an agent and they were told the hotel was closed. We were told they were over-booked.
Please beware when booking and make sure you ring the hotel to confirm on the day before leaving home!
