“Hobbit Heavenly Break”
Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

We stayed here on a Monday to Friday break in one of the newly built Hobbit Houses. They are really glam camping pods, hand crafted, (we met the builder) mini log cabins a few yards from the hotel in a copse of trees.
On arrival our pod wasn't quite ready so we were treated to tea and coffee and sat amongst the picnic benches enjoying some of the most amazing views ever.
The pod had a large, very comfortable double bed and a camp bed for our teenage son. The place had a heater and electricity so he could keep his iPad charged and we all kept snug and warm.
The toilet block was close and totally new. The floor was rough so maybe remember your flip flops. The showers had lashings of hot water and were spacious and spotlessly clean. The hobbit houses can provide bedding for an additional charge but we took our own sleeping bags and quilts.
The place is a work in progress and the owners, really lovely people, we happy to chat about their plans and really inspired us to go back.
There are some lovely walks and over the road you can hire cycles.
We used it as a base for visiting places in Cornwall as it is fairly central and easy to get to. Despite this convenience of location it is still in an idillic spot. Truly a beautiful location. We saw wild rabbits and the land around had chickens, sheep and small lambs popping by to say hello.
If your people who like entertainment and shows and love Haven or Butlins this is not for you BUT if you love time with your families, playing cards, cooking outside, walking, beautiful scenery and generally having family time then this is a fantastic place.
Tips
Take some walking shoes not just trainers if your planning to walk.
Take ya flip flops for the showers.
Book an extra few days as you won't want to come home :)

Upon arrival we were greeted by the resident chickens, who kindly escorted us to the entrance. Our room was nice and comfy, and we had everything we needed. All the Staff and locals were really friendly, and the whole place had a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere. Food was tasty, no trouble being vegan, had a really good curry. Had a little ramble on the Moors, alongside the sheep and horses, before sampling some of the alcoholic beverages on offer by the cosy log fire. Overall, had an excellent time, and didn't want to leave! Would highly recommend, and will definitely be visiting again!

only experienced room 1 it was awful too small to swing a cat no hanging space only place in miniscule shower room for towels was the floor. Tap for tiny sink too big don't turn it on or you get soaked. only place for loo roll on narrow cistern careful you don't knock it off no spare. hobbit sized kettle but not to worry no cups! Choose a good room elsewhere. Hotel felt grubby from entry through the front door and did not improve. Usually there is a redeeming feature , ie breakfast alas no, no bacon extra sausages casually offered we do not eat them. All in all an expensive mistake. attitude of owners daughter casual and dismissive couldn't have cared less as long as she got her £75.00. When I mentioned the awful room, told I could have had a different one so why were we given such a bad one with empty ones available. She was still too slap happy to have bothered to ensure that she had a supply of bacon. paid cash and had to ask for a receipt hotel name not shown on it. Just to finish it is worth noting that to reach this establishment it is necessary to drive several hundred yards over a potholed gravel road.

Room Tip: Elsewhere see notes above

The welcome was warm and friendly. My room was clean, pleasant and comfortable and the breakfast was great - possibly the best sausages I've ever had from the home-reared pigs. The view from the front is spectacular, the quiet room and comfy bed made for a good night's sleep and the tea and coffee in my room were Fair Trade. The wifi wasn't strong enough to reach my room, but I could have gone down into the public areas if that had been important. The bar was friendly and I felt comfortable in there as a woman on my own, Very good value, I would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: The view is from the front. My room only had one reading lamp - if this is an issue for you then may...

This could be such a lovely place to stay but felt so let down from start to finish.
There is a lot of building work going on but seems that the owners need to finish off one part and then go to the next.
The room I stayed in first of all had no key and the windows and doors to the outside were closed with what seemed like screws! Great if there was a fire!! The furniture was shabby and the wireless connection non existent in the rooms.
Maybe the owners should consider paying more attention to the health and safety of the rooms on offer than all the other sporadic building work going on. The trees surrounding the Accomodation and I use the term loosely were dangerous, however the owners seemed not to care. When they get sued for branches falling on a child they may start caring a little more.
The food was bland and if you even mentioned vegatarien almost ridiculed to a point of stupidity by the male owner.
At vacating the room and requiring a bill, I got quoted 3 different prices, and was told I had breakfast which I did not and which room were you in!!! after that I requested a itemised bill that was not possible. On requesting an invoice for the bill a pen could not be found. The female owner was polite and friendly. The male owner was rude and trying it on at every corner.
Good luck to that business
Not impressed at all.

A cracking Bed and Breakfast in Cornwall.

Service for the whole weekend was fantastic. Both Mark and Maxine made us feel welcomed. They we both very friendly and made us feel like we was at home.

We had dinner in the restaurant area overseeing beautiful views of the countryside. The food was great and was priced well. We would recommend the "Apple Pie Yes Please" for desert. Again service was fantastic.

Rooms are well sized with new bathrooms and underfloor heating. Breakfast in the lounge/sitting area was lovely. Just felt very welcomed at Wheal Tor.

We would 100% recommend Wheal Tor and we will coming back during the summer.
