We sensed a presence in the pit and felt that Wesleys influence was still there

“A very beautiful circular turf covered amphitheatre”
Reviewed 8 September 2011

50 years ago my late father bought an AA guide and UK atlas illustrated with dozens of pen and ink drawings. I used to spend hours looking at the pictures and years later I went on to publish some of my own drawings. The pictures opened the door to many enjoyable trips . One of which was Gwennap pit.
It is a very beautiful circular turf covered amphitheatre on a wind swept hillside near Redruth.A work of art in its own right and a must see for any budding landscape designer. Sadly not used to its full potential I couldn’t find any reference to events.
The historic connection- The pit was probably a cockpit originally but is most famous as the place where the preacher John Wesley preached on a number of occasions.
Worth a visit if you are already in the vicinity of Redruth- I think this is sadly wasted
