“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

A Minister friend staying with us had not heard about Gwennap Pit but of course had heard of John Wesley. Purely by accident and on the last night of her stay we brought her here. She was literally amazed and thrilled to be standing in the very location of the man himself hundreds of years ago. Part of the local WHS site.

“History and atmosphere to fire the imagination”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Anybody who fails to have their imagination fired by Gwennap Pit, with its great history and calm atmosphere, must sadly have missed the point. The reviewer who said there's not much to see (it's not a theme park – and there's no admission charge) should perhaps have tried to project his mind back to the second half of the 18th century when John Wesley preached there. Wesley, the Father of Methodism, took services at the Pit on no fewer than 18 occasions, between 1762-89.
The story of this iconic site is there, for all to see, in and around the little visitor centre, where you'll be offered a cuppa and not charged for it (a donation would be appreciated by the friendly, welcoming volunteers on duty, but that's up to the individual). This building adjoins the charming little Busveal Chapel (1836).
Gwennap Pit is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Other World Heritage Site members include such international treasures as the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal. You don't get this recognition by stumping up an annual subscription!
This was my second visit, and I intend to return.
True, Gwennap Pit is not easy to find (officialdom can be incredibly stuffy about roadside signs), but the search is well worth the effort, and I've heard that this situation could improve before long.

“What an unusual find”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Enjoyed a short stroll here a couple of times. The grandchildren loved running around the layers. There was nothing to dislike. It is an unusual feature in the landscape. It did give a feeling of peace sitting in the amphitheater
.
