“A 90th Birthday Party”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

I recently went out for a meal in St Agnes, we went to a lovely venue in the centre of the town which was painted a vivacious orange. Everything was really perfect and I will definitely go there again. It reminded me of a previous occasion when a member if my family invited nine of us to join her in the St Agnes Hotel for her 90th birthday lunch party. She excited us all by saying she had been in to speak to the owners and arranged for fresh fish to be available. She is a resident of St Agnes. When we arrived, during a winter month, we were directed to a dining room which was so cold that some of the party did not remove their coats or hats. The owners came to speak to us and must have been aware how cold we were, but no comment was made and no heat offered.

We ordered a variety of dishes. Most people had the supposedly fresh fish and found it to be old and horrid. One person ordered their house beef burger and hard as it is to believe, that was so terrible that she did not eat it. It was over cooked to the point of obliteration. I chose the fish pie and couldn't eat it as it was so full of fish scales that I couldn't even contemplate picking them out and making the best of a bad job. As we were guests they got away with it as none of us wanted to embarrass birthday girl by complaining. Had the circumstances been different we would all definitely returned our food untouched and refused to pay.

Our poor elderly birthday girl spent the rest of the day apologising to us, she is a pensioner and it cost her a lot, but far more importantly it ruined her day.

She will never go back there (hence the lovely terracotta venue last week) and neither will any of the rest of us.

What hard hearted people to let down a sweet old lady on her 90th birthday.

I stay away a lot, usually in corporate monoliths from Holiday Inn, Hilton and Marriott, but due to the proximity of a meeting, I stayed in St Agnes. The hotel and staff were immediately friendly and welcoming. It made me realise what I had been missing in small hotels all these years.

The village is beautiful and charming and I would recommend anyone to stay here...I will be again!

‘’Tired’’ ‘’Dated’’ ‘’Smells of Jeyes Fluid’’.

This place dates from the 17th century for crying out loud. If you don’t want dated, book a modern hotel instead!!!

We have just returned from there after a wonderful week’s holiday. We read the reviews on here before we went, and as there were far more better ones than bad ones, we booked anyway.

And we are so glad we did.

From start to finish, we couldn’t find fault. The staff were brilliant, the locals were very friendly, and Bill, well Bill was Bill 

The food was great, lovely sized portions, and, in our opinion, reasonably priced. The full Cornish breakfast sets you up for the day, and there was none of this nonsense of only serving breakfast between 8-00 and 10-00 like far too many hotels, it is served until 12-00 in the St Agnes. It’s about time hoteliers realised that during the summer; most of their guests are on holiday and would like the occasional lie in.

St Agnes itself is a brilliant location and most destinations around Cornwall are within easy reach if you drive. Due to our dog being unwell while we were there, we couldn’t travel as much as we’d have liked. And when Bill heard of our dog’s illness, he couldn’t have been more helpful.

All in all, The Aggie is wonderful. If you wanted anything, the staff were more than eager to help. Nothing was a problem; everything was done with a smile.

A very dog friendly place in more ways than one :)

We will be back, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Garvan, Heather, and wee Jinx the whippet 

Room Tip: Top floor rooms if you can :)

Went for Sunday lunch which was really good. Made to feel very welcome and there was a really good atmosphere. One of us had the Roast Beef dinner which was excellent - Roast Beef was medium rare, and the vegetables were not at all soggy. Other one had burger & chips - the burger itself was really tasty (from the local butchers), though the bread & Cheese let it down slightly

This is a lovely little village hotel, really charming. We stayed here for 3 nights whilst attending a wedding (in the church directly opposite), and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The place is family run and they are all very pleasant, accommodating and helpful. The breakfast was great, mostly local produce, and although we didn't eat in the bar ourselves there were plenty doing so each time we were in there. There is a car park which is a great advantage. If I was brutal I might say that some areas are a little tired but actually we felt that it was just charming. We would definitely return and recommend to others.

Room Tip: Room 3 looked really lovely, though we were next door!

Had a great weekend in the St. Agnes hotel when visiting friends for a birthday party.
From the moment we arrived we were made feel welcome by the friendly staff and owners who could not do enough for us!

The bedroom (2) was spacious, freshly decorated and the new ensuite was spotlessly clean.
The breakfast - included in the very reasonable price - was delicious, with lots of locally sourced ingredients.
We ate at the hotel on our second night and had a great home cooked meal in the bar.

St. Agnes itself is a lovely little place with lots of character and lots to do locally.

Overall, our experience in St Agnes and at the St Agnes hotel was very positive and we can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We liked room 2.

The owner, Bill, seems friendly enough and the young staff are hard working and friendly, but two nights running noisy inconsiderate people were ruining our sleep at 2 in the morning. When we called out for them to be quiet, one said "it's a pub mate! What did you expect?" Another said, "is that Bill? "
Then when we checked out our bill was £130-00 to much!!!
We are wondering if there are much nicer places to stay, and when we come back we will find out.
