“Very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2013

Had a great time staying here. The owners were fantastic and could not have been more friendly and accommodating. The locals were so friendly and totally made us feel at home. The room was clean and had all that we needed. We ate here and were very impressed with the standard of the food. We chose to stay here due to its proximity to Eden project etc which is ideal but I have to say that the proprietors made this trip enjoyable for us.

The room was very large and bright as promised, and the en-suite bathroom as well, with a large shower. Breakfast was the highlight of the place, with a nice lady offering a variety of choices every morning, both for cooked and uncooked breakfast. The place is also a pub, with a nice garden at the back and a beautiful white cat.

The bed wasn't made up in the morning during our stay, which was rather puzzling. The bed itself was extremely unconfortable, too soft and bumpy. There was a curfew from 11.00 pm to 07.30pm, as the house alarm was set so we were told not to exit our room over that period of time as it would go off. The place is located on the outskirts of town, therefore if you don' t have a car it can be very tiring to move around.

stayed here because it was handy for the Eden Project and Heligan. No St Austell is not the most attractive place in the world, but The Duke of Cornwall is what it says-a pub with b&b.The hosts are very welcoming, eager to please and very knowledgable about the local area- and the food is great! Debbie is a keen gardener and has made her little courtyard an oasis. All the staff were pleasant and helpfull.

The Duke of Cornwall has a lot in common with St Austell itself....... primarily that they should both be given an extremely wide berth. Having just spent a couple of weeks touring Cornwall, staying in fantastic places like Falmouth, St Ives and Padstow, it's hard to fathom why anyone in their right mind would want to go come here. I drove through it several times, trying to find the "market" area. Perhaps it's simply extremely small, or maybe just very well hidden, but to me, it resembled some of the less salubrious parts of Slough. As for the hotel, there had - very unfortunately - been a kitchen fire, so I can't comment on the food.... it may well be as good as some of the reviews suggest.... but the accommodation? Good grief! I honestly would normally prefer to say nothing, rather than give a hotel/B&B a "terrible" rating, but this is seriously not a place to be staying if you're a tourist. A jobbing labourer, an inter-railing student unable to find a hostel ...... maybe..... possibly....... for a night. If you really need to stay in the area, then go a few miles further afield to the coast and stay in one of the harbour areas, or simply take another half an hour and head down the coast.

Unfortunately we must have turned up on an off night, after reading the lunch menu and walking back miles in the evening the waitress informed us the carvery wasn't available on Sunday's, in fact she would check, but there was no food at all. The pub was dark, very noisy (with only two other people in there) and 2 lots of loud music competing with each other. A real shame.

If you are a tourist in the St Austell area I would say you don't want to stay here. Go a few miles further towards the coast and stay in Charlestown, it is a million times nicer. The Duke of Cornwall is in a run down street, lots of boarded up shops etc near by, and the pub itself is also at best rough around the edges. The room we were shown to had no window, just a fire escape and would have been depressing to stay in. The pub had suffered a kitchen fire and so there was no food available. We left more or less immediately after seeing the pub and room and went to stay in much nicer hotel in much nicer location in Charlestown (for the same price).

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel in different lcation

When we booked I knew that we would not have an ensuite (which we normally do when staying away from home). I have to say we will ensure that we do have an ensuite in future - my DH did not like having to use the shared toilet. The room itself was ok but the tv was hard to work. Staff did eventually come and sort it for us - they were very busy in the bar downstairs.
When we arrived there was a street party going on, so we couldnt get to the car park. It would have been helpful if the pub had informed us of this before we arrived as we had to go all round the houses to park anywhere near the pub until they opened the street again at 6pm.
Also it was a taxi ride into town to get something to eat as there had been a kitchen fire, so no food available. Breakfast was very hit and miss as the landlady was called away and there didnt seem to be any organisation.

Room Tip: get a room with ensuite!
