We stayed 5 nights for our babymoon - rooms were modern, our view from the balcony was terrible! I would have expected that given our length of stay, we would not be put into a room which overlooked the back of the main building meaning we saw nothing but weeds in the typical English summer. In addition, we could hear vividly every little step from the room above us rendering no deep sleep for 5 nights.. !!
Service was average throughout the stay.. we had to throw the towels entirely into the bathtub to get it washed after 2 days (ie it wont be washed if half in tub and other half hanging over the bathtub; facewash x2 was not renewed; tea bags wasn't replenished entirely (no peppermint tea after day 2); no waiting for a response after knocking on the door and cleaner would storm in (happened twice on 2 separate days) pool was small for the number of people wanting to use it especially if an water aerobic class is taking place (not for guests but separate membership!) giving only 2 lanes for 8 customers waiting to use the lanes.. gym was small and stuffy; dinner at the restaurant was lovely until the Cornwall dessert which we were told by the waitress was bread and butter pudding turned out to be sponge saturated in an acidic fruit compote (terrible for a pregnant women with heartburn)!! We left the dessert untouched and explained why when asked by the new waiter but received no compensation... complete waste of £7.50! At breakfast, we asked if we could sit in a table of four instead of 2 as it was 10mins to end of breakfast and place was relatively empty with many guest finishing up but were told that we could not as more guests were expected to arrive.. true as it was but another waitress gave the same table we requested to a business couple 2 mins after we sat at the little table - inconsistent service!!

Overall, the basics of quality service and delivery really was not there and therefore the little things mentioned above which individually was immaterial made the entire cumulative experience very disappointing.

Our group:
There were approx 30 of us celebrating my mothers 75th. Good mix of ages, with my specific family consisting of 2 adults and 4 children aged 3, 6, 9, 10. We stayed in the self catering lodges.

Highlights:
Great grounds
Excellent accomodation
Good location for exploring. Charlestown, Porthpean, Pentewean sands, Mevigessey all within cycling distance and each has its own character
Cycle track goes right past grounds of estate. Very safe and relaitvely flat until incline to Mevigessey which gets the ticker going!
Pool facility is good and great when weather is not so good
Gym excellent
Spa treatments good qaulity
One round of golf at St Austell golf course. Very frinedly and special rate of £18 given as we were from Corwall Hotel - great value.
Ice cream from Charlestown creamery at top of harbour - made daily and got our vote as best ice cream of hols!
Tried numerous pasties and found Pasty Presto pretty good - go to Mevigissey - pasty from Pasty Presto and chips from chippy opposite - great night out! If you have room theres ice cream next door, but we had to cycle back!
Took a trip to Wadebridge - about 40 min drive from Cornwall Hotel. There is a cycle route that takes you from Wadebridge to Padstow. Very flat and about 6 miles. Padstow great and all in all a great day out.

Points of concern:
Bit of a clash between grown up people and families. The Cornwall is very high quality and attracting an affluent customer. When those grabbing a break away from work and family are mixed with families in the pool area, think there is a clash, which made us feel a touch uncomfortable at times. Felt like the place did not quite know what it wanted to be - a high brow spa resort or a place to take your family - not sure it can be both.

The staff were not great. Bit of 'if we can attitude' and get the feeling that you are not worthy at times as a customer. Maybe a cultural standing of the place being pretty up market, and staff have taken on this pesona, but a neg from our point.

Girls in the group had treatments on the day of mothers birthday. Treatments were great, but drinks at end took 45mins and were expensive.

My partner and I tried to pre-book a Sunday lunch and free swim at the Cornwall Hotel Spa which was initially fully booked but we were placed on the waiting list in case there were any cancellations. Thinking that we were unlikely to get a place given that we were second on the list we decided to opt for the mini spa deal which meant that we could use the swimming pool and facilities for the day including tennis courts and which also included a 25 minute treatment. Fortunately despite having paid for the full mini treatment we were telephoned by the restaurant to say there had been a cancellation and offered a place in the restaurant for Sunday lunch and offered a full refund and later paid only for the Sunday lunch.

The reception staff at the spa were extremely friendly, welcoming and very helpful. The Sunday lunch was delicious, service was fantastic and the waiting staff were very attentive. Well worth the price of £15.95 for two courses plus a free swim. Would definately return.

Booked B&B highly recommended but nightmare! Left in a hurry, quite by accident found The Cornwall. Arranged to stay one night stayed 5! Fabulous, all staff super helpful and cheerful.
Special mention to Tracey the food supervisor, she is a huge asset and made our stay.
beautiful grounds, excellent spa and pool.I had to drag my wife away or she would still be there.
Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: The main house rooms are special but no balcony, it was a sunny week, one of the few! and the balcon...

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Cornwall hotel/Spa and I must say it was very enjoyable - apart from the grizzly baby next door! Not really ideal bringing such small babies to a busy hotel and having the stunning views and lovely peace and quiet ruined by the sudden screams of a baby.

Staff were more than helpful and very friendly. Food was lovely too, although one morning when ordering breakfast we asked for tea and coffee (room service) and half the pot of tea had been splashed all over the tray and we didnt have any milk or cups, so had to ring down to ask for these. But other than that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The rooms are a lovely size, and the bathroom was huge! I enjoyed waking up to the lovely views from the room too.

I also booked in for a full body massage which was lovely and the lady who did it - sorry I forgot the name!:-( was really lovely and very chatty, I had a good laugh whilst flat out on the table! I then went back and had my nails done and again the lady who did them was friendly and did a really nice job with my nails. I would definitely go back!

We are looking to come back in a few months time so hopefully see you all again soon:-)!

The hotel grounds are beautiful. However, breakfast is a huge let down, served in a room too small for the number of guests, staff was unable to cope and we had to ask for coffee and toast 3 times! Lunch on the patio was better but waitress was 'very tired' after serving breakfast and forgot twice to bring part of our order. Dinner was very good, our waitress from Lyon was very professional, knew all about the cheese board and was a pleasure. Our room was nice, but the balcony was full of cobwebs and the glass had green mildew growing on it. The hotel is badly under-staffed, and many need proper training. The spa rescheduled our treatments 4 times in 24 hours and then cancelled 50% of the booking one hour before as they had 'staffing issues'. Sadly, we will not return.....

Room Tip: Stay in the main building.

My family are coming back to our hometown St Austell from Australia next year for a wedding. I visited the hotel recently whilst home on bereavement leave. I was impressed with location and layout of the grounds. I attended reception and although busy a very helpful female manager organized a staff member to show me some of the rooms. I was shown two of the main older building rooms which were a good size and had nice big beds and ensuites. Then shown two of the new wings rooms which were more ideal for families or longer stays with bigger rooms with mini kitchen dining areas. Very impressed. I took a walk around well kept grounds and the pool spa area looks terrific. Nice small kids playground and restaurant looked high standard.
Also visited the sales room lodge and shown around by helpful lady. These 2-3 bedroom lodges are great and can be rented through hotel or bought!
They will be building the next stage of lodges in the near future but this shouldn't effect visitors just check with them first maybe.
Definitely staying here next June 2013 for our stay.Looking forward to it already.
Not much compares to this in St Austell Bay area.

Room Tip: All are forward facing over grounds. Old part ideal for 1-2 night weekend stays.
