“Excellent food, great views and good pitch & putt”
Reviewed 13 September 2012

We didn't stay here, but popped in for a quick spot of lunch and had fun on the free pitch and putt. Even though we weren't residents, the staff were really helpful and the food was excellent. I was quite surprised by the reasonable prices considering that you usually pay more in hotels. But I've paid more in pubs for food of lesser quality. It's off the beaten track but has wonderful views of the sea and lovely sea breezes to keep you cool.

Stayed for 2 nights in Aug '12 with another couple. We were given a free upgrade on our room at no extra cost, the staff were obliging and always helpful, noticed the staff were all quiet young, but they were well trained and did not appear out of place in what appeared to be a hotel frequented by older couples.
Breakfast was good, we even asked for beef sausages, of which they didn't have, but said they would make arrangements to get them. In the meantime they provided a vegetarian alternative. The following morning, a staff memeber approached us and asked if they could give instruction to the chef to prepare the same again without being prompted. The dining staff remembered drinks orders from previous evenings, which gave the feeling of a very personalised service and expereince.
Facilities, hotel, room, service all excellent, the only comment is we didn't have a mini-bar in our room. Also we booked 2 x 18 hole games of golf - turns out the course is always extremely busy not only with hotel guests but locals, so not somewhere you want to play if you want a leisurely game.

Room Tip: Request sea facing as there are lots of rooms that overlook the parking area

This is our 14th year of visiting Carlyon Bay Hotel and around our twentieth stay. Just arrived back from our second visit this year, seven days in Aug and another six days last week. It just gets better, and better. Most reviewers have said it all...outstanding staff in all areas whether it be housekeeping, gardening, consierge, reception, bar, dining, spa, golf. For sure there are staff changes and new people to be met for the first time, however and without exception, all are extremely courteous, friendly and professional....and all to the same exacting standards of the hotel.
Looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: For sure some of the rooms are on the small side but that's how it is. It is not a large hotel w...

This is my third time back to this hotel and it never fails to amaze me. Each time i go I don't thing it can get any better but it truly does. This is a top class hotel with top class staff and facilities.

The outdoor pool is lovely and is the indoor pool and jacuzzi, the spa therapist are excellent. If you are in St Austell then this hotel is a must - The General Manager and staff at this hotel are the best I have encountered well done everyone - Amazing

Room Tip: A room looking out to sea - WOW

We had three nights at the Carlyon and were delighted. The staff were welcoming and friendly, the rooms were excellent and the food was superb. The facilities, too, from the lounges to the spa, golf course, tennis courts and swimming pools were first rate. We would recommend the hotel unreservedly and will certainly return in the future. It lived up to its four star rating in every respect.

Room Tip: We had three sea-view rooms, one single and two doubles. They were all excellent.

We had our wedding ceremony; reception and evening do at the Carlyon Bay Hotel at the beginning of August. We are absolutely speechless by the service we received from all of the staff and it made our day truly perfect!

From the initial enquiries and appointments we were always made to feel welcome, especially by our wedding co-ordinator Marta who is an absolute credit to the hotel. She dealt with any queries or ideas we had, which in turn made our day run perfectly without any hitches.

The venue itself is beautiful, we only have a handful of photos taken by friends and family so far but already we have some stunning photos of the arrival of guests amongst the flowers at the entrance on the red carpet to the views across the bay and overlooking the rear of the gardens at the hotel. (This was one of the factors why we'd picked this hotel being locals and having a strong connection with this area)

The food and drinks were superb, everyone commented on the amount and the extremely high quality of food they had and said that it was one of the best venues for food they'd ever been to. We chose beef and chicken as our main courses along with a mushroom risotto for vegetarians and everyone was truly satisfied by these courses. The service by the staff was impeccable and it definitely made our day being so professional and to such a high standard.

For our evening reception we held it at the golf club, and again, stunning views and staff who couldn’t do enough to help - they transported all of our decorations down to the golf club whilst we had photos taken down at Charlestown. The food for the buffet was amazing and had a huge choice from the traditional pasties through to a cheese board.

Our room was complementary and was a spacious and tasteful sea view room, it had all the required things you'd need from a room and was immaculately decorated.

What made us pick this hotel was the immediate professional impression we received from Marta and the staff, the beautiful location (and luckily lovely weather!) and the excellent value for money. Compared to several other hotels, this was by far our number one choice.

Thank you so much to all the staff at the hotel, and in particular to Marta for making our special day truly amazing and full of wonderful memories for years to come!

Just back from a 6 day stay in the Carlyon Bay Hotel and even though it was an exhausting 8 hour drive back home with elderly mother and new baby I'm still feeling the benefit of the peace and warmth of this lovely hotel.

From the moment we walked (stumbled) through the door we were greeted with smiles and kindness. The efficient staff helped us with ooodles of luggage without flinching, sorted out a smooth check in and we were delighted with our rooms (at that point two singles) ... extremely comfortable beds and (once I'd read the pillow menu and chosen them) lovely feather pillows.

The dining room is superb, wonderful view out to sea and staff that really know how to serve both with friendliness and discretion. There was a huge range of people there; couples old and younger, families, business travellers, the odd group of friends and like us a few people with babies. It was the first time I'd stayed in a hotel with my baby and I was apprehensive about disturbing other diners and residents and also that the staff might glare at us ... the opposite was true, we were welcomed by everyone and that first night as soon as my food arrived the maitre d' whisked my baby off for a walk around the restaurant and bar so I could enjoy my food. She loved it and so did I ... he was absolutely charming ... and was equally wonderful with all the residents.

The food in the restaurant was superb (we went with the dinner, bed and breakfast option) .. not nouveau in the coulis/jus/foam kind of way but beautifully prepared and wonderfully presented. The wine waiters really knew their stuff and chose well from the extensive wine book (not list!!) ... the table waiters were unobtrusive, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly - if people wanted to chat they chatted and if people were absorbed in their own conversations then they were left be. Both my mother and I have travelled extensively and we both agreed that the staff at the Carlyon Bay Hotel were superb by comparison to almost anywhere else we've been.

The lounge area is huge and comfortable, the Taste restaurant looked great as well and the Spa was just wonderful. The outdoor pool was glorious, wonderful views out to sea, and the indoor pool was excellent with a spa bath and steam room and sauna and hot loungy chairs to loll on ... it didn't feel like a hotel pool but a proper spa pool.

The room furnishings were lovely, the fine cotton sheets very comfortable ... the only slight complaint is that there are two a/c type units one at the front of the building and one of the back ... they might be extractor fans I'm not sure but when they did come on it did disturb my sleep the first night in my front facing room so I changed rooms (which they were happy to oblige with), and then at the back in 216 and 217 you could still hear it come on about 5am ... just after the baby had gone back to sleep ... a low rumble sound ... but other people I asked hadn't heard it so it may be that I just have sensitive ears!!

The staff cleaning the rooms were helpful and attentive as well.

The grounds are gorgeous, lots of hydrangea bushes everywhere and lovely lawns ... I'm not a golfer but the golf course looked lovely ...

the hotel provides a golf pro for lessons, a tennis coach and in the summer it had a room for children to go to with two wonderful people who knew magic tricks, could paint and play cards and games etc ... they also offered activities (very discretely) like archery and bun / cake icing.

On the Friday night there was 'lively disco' entertainment (ending at 11) which was very quiet but fun ... it was in the lounge and couldn't be heard out of there or above there ... on the Saturday there was a duo singing who were superb ... again all very understated.

The beach was lovely (it does have a rather ramshackle old building at one end of it but ignore it and focus on the stunning sand and the marvellous swimming ... not idea for paddling but great for swimming... Charlestown is a short walk away and a must do, Fowey is not far away and also wonderful as is Mevagissey.... the Eden project and the China Clay museum are close as are the lost gardens of Heligan.

The hotel is extremely well priced for everything it offers ... the breakfasts are excellent, the wifi worked well on phone and laptop and, well, really I can't speak highly enough of all they offer.

I would go there alone, with a partner, with family, I'd recommend it to friends for events (licensed for weddings) and I look forward to taking my daughter there again as she grows up as I know we'll be assured of a friendly welcome...

Room Tip: 217 was lovely a double or twin and 216 a single was great too both look over the sea ...
