“Hotel Excellent, Staff Excellent, Food Excellent, Let down by a Manager”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2014

Before the negatives, I should start by saying every aspect of the hotel stay was perfect, nice room, friendly staff, restaurant, bar and spa were all well above 4* standard. I booked through lastminute.com.

On arrival, the receptionist was polite, but took our booking printout over to her manager at the desk behind her. As this was only a couple of metres away from us, we could clearly hear him saying, "they will have to pay extra if there's 2 of them staying, they must have booked for 1 person, that's only £34.50 per head for the hotel"

The poor receptionist was stuck between her manager, who was rather rude and us, her customers. She handled it excellently, asking to see our booking. I handed her my phone, with the email showing I had booked for 2. She took that over to her manager, who launched into another rant, "breakfast as well, it's a mistake, we'll have to call expedia". The young lady finished our check-in and we enjoyed our stay. There was no need for the customer to hear any of that, the manager could have taken her aside and/or just not raised his voice.

My wife had a manicure in the spa, she had a great time and on check-out, I was surprised to find it wasn't at all overpriced. Dinner was expensive, but the quality of the food and the service made it well worth it. Breakfast was excellent, hot buffet, toast brought to your table. Service was excellent.

The rooms were clean, bathrooms were a good size and beds comfortable.

This was my second stay at the Carlyon (this month). I stay away a lot with work, this time I was lucky enough to be able to bring the Mrs as well. The last stay was just as good. Just a shame that the management weren't as capable as the staff.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms really are worth it. The views are stunning.

The hotel. in my view. is one of the best in Cornwall and should not be missed. With the golf course as part of the deal. the value is outstanding. The food was excellent and the staff very attentive and just wanted to please and make sure the guests had a great stay.
A real gem and we will be going back - many times.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view rooms. Lovely way to wake up.

The Carlyon Bay was everything we expected and more. The staff were efficient and friendly, it's such a simple thing to say 'hello' and 'good morning' yet warm and welcoming. The value was excellent and the food exquisite. It's rare to get both at the same time. I look forward to returning again and again.

After a lovely golf break in 2013, we returned to celebrate my wife's birthday in March this year. The room, quality of service and food were excellent, and apart from a game of golf, we also managed to visit the Eden Project, St. Michael's Mount and Land's End comfortably in two days, and could have found plenty of other things to do. Will definitely return.

My wife and I cannot fault the hotel and staff for their attentative service. The restaurant was a real bonus with both quality of food being excellent and the service efficient and very friendly.
We will definately be returning to this "jewel of the South West"
Ideally situated for the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and a number of National Trust properties.

being a Cornishman who used to live in the St Austell area I have stayed at the Carlyon Bay Hotel with my wife on numerous occasions over the last twenty years. The Hotel has always maintained its high and traditional standards and our last visit over the weekend of 16th March was no exception. The staff are attentive and efficient and nothing is too much trouble for them. The restaurant at both breakfast and dinner always provide high quality food served with professionalism. If you play golf the "free" golf on the Carlyon Bay course is well worth the effort. Particular staff who live and breathe the Brend vision are John the Head Porter and the Restaurant Manager. We recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a fuss free stay in St Austell bay
