“A great place to stay”
Reviewed 28 May 2012

Recently spent 5 nights here. View is super and location very quiet. Food excellent & different menu every night. Breakfast good too. Room was spacious & very clean. Excellent hot shower. All staff were very friendly & helpful. Couldn't have asked for more.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a view out to the bay

We booked the hotel for a short break in May 2012. From the minute we arrived to the moment we left, we had a wonderful time. The hotel has a lovely timeless feel, the rooms are fine, the views are stunning. My husband and I were accompanied by my elderly parents and the staff did everything possible to make their stay perfect.
A big thank you to Jasper and George who were so helpful and kind, and who had a great sense of humour.
The food was lovely both in the brasserie and in the restaurant with plenty of choice and great flexibility. Nothing was too much trouble. In fact, we all enjoyed it so much that despite saying we would eat somewhere different each night, we found ourselves back at the hotel deliberating over the menu.
The breakfast was extensive and the saute potatoes, well don't take them off the menu, they are great!
The hotel is located in a quiet area but very close to the Eden project and Heligan, a perfect location to explore the area.
Thanks for a great stay, and thanks to the staff behind the scenes, working to make it such a great place to stay.

We stayed here for 3 nights recently. The staff were very kind, helpful and cheerful. The whole atmosphere is positive and welcoming.

The hotel is clearly a building of various parts, each having been added at some time in the past. The core of the building is a lovely wood panelled area, but the more modern parts, whilst functional are not quite so interesting. One irritating aspect is the door locks, which are very secure, but require not only both hands but a considerable degree of dexterity to operate. The bathrooms are lovely, the only curious aspect is why only the smallest bar of soap is provided and that only on the first night. Two of us got through it in one evening.
The food is generous, well cooked and served well. The breakfast is a real feast.

Overall a very comfortable quiet and cosy get away in a delightful part of Cornwall

Room Tip: Try the sea view rooms

We booked this place last minute for a weekend trip with my three kids. They have a room that will accommodate two adults and three children. The children's room is a separate room with three bunk beds and it's own TV. The only problem we had was that my three boys all fought over who got to be on the top bunk.

The view from the sitting area in the room was spectacular. The breakfast was great. The hotel service was also wonderful. We will definitely be back when we have more than a weekend.

Room Tip: The family room was very nice. I think there is only a single family room.

We booked this hotel via the very helpful tourist information near St Austell. The hotel was very quiet , not many residents in the beginning of February and we were pleased with the fabulous views. It is along a private road so attracts no passing trade. The welcome was good and we were directed to our room which looked out on the view. The decor is a little dated, 1980's springs to mind but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The en-suite contained a bath which enabled a nice hot soak, ideal on a cold day. We were the only patrons in the restaurant that evening so service was very good. There was ample choice on the menu including fresh fish which is a thrill when you live in the Midlands. The dinner was excellent and good value, so no complaints there.
The welcome continued at breakfast the next morning and that was as expected, good choice, well cooked. Only criticism would be the orange juice, powdered I think.
Overall a lovely stay, not cheap for the time of year but overall good value. Would we stay there again, probably not because there are so many other places to visit in Cornwall but would definitely recommend

Room Tip: Sea views recommended

We went to Porth Avallen Hotel on July 2011. The interior is decorated in an English country house style. We booked the Bay facing room and got an excellent view of the Bay from the room window. The bathrooms were clean and tidy. The staff were friendly. The Dinner served at the hotel was delicious starting from the appetizer to the dersert. Overall we had a really comfortable stay at Porth Avallen and would love to visit again!

We have just attended a carvery at the hotel for my mums birthday & might I say what a fantastic meal we had. The food was some of the best I've had on a carvery style & the desserts were of an excellent standard to. £9.25 for the carvery &£5.00 for each dessert is good value to. Altogether there were 30 of us that attended this meal and we all agreed that the waiting staff did a fantastic job serving us.
