“Will not return to this substandard hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014 via mobile

Starting with positives, the hotel is located close to the Eden Project and has lovely views across Carlyon Bay and good proximity to coastal walks. There were also some lovely staff members that were friendly and efficient and welcoming. I've stayed here about 6/7 times over the last 12 years but would never return following the last visit. Firstly, the luxury sea view room is of a very low standard - carpets, crockery, bedding and amenities are all very tired. The sea view overlooks the carpark. Showers have no power and the bathrooms are poorly laid out, making it hard to access the bathtub without banging into the toilet and side of the bath - not great for people who need easy access. They tried to overcharge us upon checking out for a meal we did not have. Lastly, the reason we will not return is due to the incredible rudeness of the owner/barman, who seemed to take a dislike to us and spoke to us rudely on a few occasions, at one point raising his voice. He was unwelcoming, irrational and made personal insults for no explicable reasons. We have just returned from St Ives, where we experienced the total opposite in hospitality. We are a professional couple and do not need to tolerate this kind of behaviour when we are respectful paying guests who have stayed in all manner of budget and luxury hotels over the world. The value for money at the Porth Avallen is poor and I understand why it's rating is low. We hope to find somewhere more welcoming and with better standards for our next trip. Would never recommend this place to our friends or family.

Were looking for a relaxing holiday and got it. Stayed for a week in early July 2014. Wonderful views of St Austell Bay so look for a room with a sea view. Staff were very personable and friendly. George, the owner, was always there to help. Brilliant coastal walks from the hotel and only 10/15 minutes walk from the historic harbour of Charlestown. Could eat in the bar/brasserie, restaurant, conservatory or patio. An excellent base for visiting Cornwall.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view.

Breakfast was cooked fresh to order and can highly recommend the scrambled eggs and salmon. Staff friendly overall a lovely stay to be repeated. A nice 10 min walk to charlestown which was nice.

My wife and i my polska Princess and i have just arrived back from 2 nights at this wonderful hotel. The views are to die for but you must pay for a deluxe room to appreciate it, well worth the extra. The room was a good size and plenty of scenic windows, the bathroom good and clean and the location great.
I recommend this hotel to all of my followers (over 6000 i believe). The management and staff were friendly and polite apart from one who didn't want to help her work colleague pour my drinks, when he asked her to make me a spritzer, she curtly replied "do it yourself", what a shame we were paying big bucks to be spoilt. The Owner was friendly, courteous and made you feel like you were special. A talent he should pass on. The chap on reception was friendly and accomodating. The breakfast was fine and freshly cooked albeit the dining room slightly cramped but i guess you have to fit everyone in somewhere. The grounds are awesome and well kept. You wont regret one minute of your stay here unless you meet the girl with attitude of course.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a view its well worth it. Use the taxi company the hotel recommends t...

To get here you have to drive through a modern housing estate, although the hotel is well signed; and suddenly you are out away from everything with an incredible sea bay view! The Cornish Coastal path passes right by and you can go for a short or long walk before sitting with your aperitif on a decked garden looking out to sea, then enjoy the best mussels you have ever had! - plump and orange; caught just out in the bay in front of you by local fishermen. The menu is short - but that is because everything is cooked from fresh to order - and very reasonably priced. we stayed here end of June 2014 and had fantastic weather - the staff were very nice and friendly.

Room Tip: you can ask for a seaview room for a little extra cost.

This was a small hotel in St Austell cornwall, which is absolutely lovely with amazing view's.
The staff that work at the hotel made us feel at home and are friendly, sociable.
the food was lovely and fresh as they get fresh crab ,mussels and fish daily!!! Tasty
the locals are very polite and pleasant.

Room Tip: Even if you don't get a room facing the seafront because it may cost more, you can request to ha...
