“Very disappointing.”

We visited this place with our family and after a very long wait found the food absolutely tasteless and left more than what we ate. When we left, we were still hungry so we ended up at McDonalds near Hayle as our children won the vote as to where to go!

We ate here on our last night, the 29th of July, after some discussion and debate as there were 8 on us (two families) but it was a great choice. Most of us had the 16oz Rump all cooked to perfection, they ranged from Blue to well done. Great place, don't judge a book by its cover, great atmosphere inside.

Friends and I were staying nearby and went here for a meal, excellent choice available from both the menu and specials and was real value for money. Staff and locals in there were very friendly. We were so impressed we went the following night again for a meal, the bar area was busy as it was quiz night and was full with locals and visitors. We were offered a table in the restaurant area and the waiter was very attentive, there was a great atmosphere and we wished it was our local. I shall go there again in September when I will be staying in the area again with other friends.

After reading SAM HKs review, all we can say is that they had the wrong pub,or were trying to advertise another LOCAL pub?
We stayed at the Smugglers 11-10-2009,had a great time, afternoon Jazz session, great evening meal/wine,excellent menu and wine list,a clean bed/bedroom ensuite to sleep 4,only 2 of us KING SIZE BED!joined in the pub quiz, and were made to feel welcome and at home.Breakfast was a challenge,a large plate with a well cooked very large breakfast everything no skimping, fruit juice, cereal, toast etc, enough for a whole days food,Im a big man and a big eater of good food,so that tells you a lot!My partner has a special diet, that was catered for without a quibble, unlike someother local pubs, our nice dogs were made welcome as well!!I was a stranger in this pub,but was made to feel like a local resident by time we left! Thanks to the very pleasant polite staff, and the landlord/lady,see you all again soonest,Maurice and Jean(BRISTOL)
We will be returning for another session soonest, all the way from Bristol

stayed here in november me and my partner, if all cornish people are like the ones working here then i would never return, the food was the worst iv EVER paid for. the rooms had dirt everywhere and when i said something they said well you get what we have left!!!! we went to some of the pubs in hayle and they are gorgeous and the staff have smiles on there faces! you have to have a philps pasty it will make your holiday!!!!! but if you do deside to stay here dont let them put you off because there are a lot of great things to do and see close by.

ps we meet a couple who was staying at the star inn and they said it was great and cheeper.

Stayed over the New Year at the Smugs after getting to know the locals and the landlord and landlady over the years visiting for the excellent food.
Great pub, great setting with far reaching views to Hayle and St. Ives from the beer garden. The beer garden its self is really large and ideal for kids to run around.
The pub is "olde worlde" in some parts with a modern extension and function room. Menu is superb using locally sourced cornish produce wherever possible with kids choices available. Usually a good specials board and meal deals through the week. Sunday lunch is enormous!! and the pub is usually very busy due to the Jazz club meetings held there each week. The accommodation upstairs is basic but nice and clean, we certainly had no complaints, although a bit on the expensive side, on the other hand, its a great place to stay and the landlord & landlady made us feel like part of the family, nothing was too much trouble for them.

  • Liked — friendlyness of the staff and the location.
  • Disliked — not much really!!
