“Gorgeous place, well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2014

This is a really lovely country house to visit. For some reason it doesn't seem as well visited as some of the other local houses (Lanhydrock for example) but we thought it was really the best. Firstly they have some excellent art, well worth seeing - a mix of old masters and some modern art. The house is still lived in by the family which makes it feel much more like a home and less like something the national trust have put together so you can 'see what it might have been like'. There is a picture trail for children and they have bothered putting together a lovely play room for children with costumes to dress up like the pictures in the house and lots of different reading books to stop and read - someone had really thought about the selection of toys too with things for boys and girls of all ages. The gardens are beautiful and have a great selection of sculpture. There was a good café and it was all you needed for a good day out

“Heavenly place”

Wonderful house with lovely garden..it has the most beautiful tree I've ever seen (a Black Walnut) I am a huge fan of The National Trust and this place has a great "feel" to it..warm and approachable with lovely room stewards..all in all it was a wonderful outing during a wonderful holiday.

“Fabulous House and Gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

I have wanted to go for ages and the house and grounds exceeded my expectations. Lovely cloister setting for lunch. The house was amazing in that the art is constantly evolving due to the owners. How great to see modern artists alongside older ones. I also liked the way the bedrooms still looked lived in - such a great touch. I know the family still live in the property and use the reception rooms from time to time which added to the atmosphere of the house and Sir Richard bade us fair well as we left!
The NT volunteers were brilliant as always and when I got chatting to a lovely lady, she pointed out the newly found window graffiti and showed us the children's height chart. How great to always be finding new things and sharing this just added to our day.
The weather was lovely, so we sat in the grounds in the afternoon, a perfect end to a perfect day

“Wonderful "real" house & gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2014

Excellent venue - well laid out & signposted. Gardens are huge and superb - really loved how they have incorporated areas of natural uncut grassland into the formal gardens.
The house is done via timed tickets (not really necessary when we were there but probably helps when very busy). House has a very "lived-in" feel (the family are still in residence despite it being a NT property), and is a fascinating mix of normal and grandiose.
Excellent tea-room as to be expected, and a real treat of being able to sit eating it on the lovely lawn at the front of the house.
Recommended and well worth a trip!
