“Excellent boutique hotel - Thoroughly Recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2012

We can highly recommend this charming, picturesque boutique hotel having just spent 2 nights staying there. The hosts are friendly and professional and we enjoyed delicious breakfast fare, attractive manicured gardens, while the children were enthralled with the plunge pool and friendly dogs. The rooms are smartly fitted out and very comfortable and we found it the perfect base from which to visit Berry and Jervis Bay. Outstanding accommodation on the south coast - recommended.

We stayed at Woodbyne for a couple of days over the Christmas period. This is a little hotel in a very pretty garden in the country. The room was very comfortable with a big king bed with crisp sheets and comfortable chairs. The breakfast was generous and delicious and the staff were very pleasant. The man at the desk was pleasant and businesslike (we did not need a new friend!). We did not have a problem at all with traffic noise, occasionally there was a slight smell but the place was full and I guess everyone was on holidays and having baths and long showers – and after all we were in the country where envirocycles and recycling are mandatory. We did not find the price at Christmas excessive ($295 per night) - it does include a huge breakfast for two and taxes. We stay at small hotels all over the world and this is comparable to some of the better ones. We would definitely return to this hotel.

We arrived for a three night stay, paid for a three night stay...but left after two because the place smelled of sewerage. They charged 5 star prices ($330 a night), but this place is anything but.... besides the disgusting smell pervading the entire site, the owner is cold upon arrival, the bathroom facilities are in desperate need of a renovation and it is situated right on the Princes highway (read very noisey 24/7). You cant open your verandah doors because of the smell and the noise, so you feel trapped in the room. The gardens are beautiful but you cant appreciate them. The breakfasts are lovely, the wait staff girls were friendly and helpful, but dont ask for a simple scrambled egg and bacon.... they chef not make it... it is not on the menu.... I arranged this accommodation for a group of us and felt very embarassed when we arrived. So so dissappointed as the place has so much potential...

In response to this review, we advise that on the 8th July 2011 this reviewer was sent her confirmation for 2 rooms for the 3 nights - 30th & 31st December 2011 and 1st January 2012 – which falls in the Christmas, New year period, the busiest time of the year. The room rate was $330 per night which is what it is all year (we do not add a surcharge for this period unlike many other accommodation establishments). On receipt of the confirmation we were then advised by the reviewer that she was bringing her 14 month old child and that the second room was required for her parents to babysit the child whilst they attended a wedding function in the Berry area. We informed her that, due to our previous experiences, a 3 day booking was too long and that a 2 day booking would be more suitable but this was ignored.
During the ensuing period we were contacted on numerous occasions to ensure that the 2 rooms would be adjacent to each other so that the grandparents would have easy access to the child for babysitting.
On arrival, the reviewer and her parents were shown to their 2 adjacent rooms and appeared quite delighted with the setup. As the stay progressed it was apparent that the child could not settle as it was crying constantly and the grandparents were exhausted.
Therefore, it was probably not surprising when we were approached at 6pm on the 3rd night and advised that they would be checking out immediately as the child could not settle, was still screaming and would be better off at home in her own surrounds. The grandparents paid their own account and did not say they were unhappy. At no stage were we advised of any sewerage smell or of any of their other complaints. Obviously, we charged the guest the cost of the 3rd night – as per the cancellation policy – and particularly because we were unable to rebook the room in what is our busiest period.

Woodbyne has installed one of the largest commercial enviro cycle systems obtainable which is licensed by the Shoalhaven Council and inspected regularly under a maintenance contract. Sure there maybe a slight odour from time to time in peak periods but this is for a short duration only. For heavens sake this is the country and not a city hotel with a sewerage system that pollutes all of the Sydney beaches.

We find the comments on the condition of the rooms and breakfasts insulting to our hardworking staff who are quite proprietorial and work tirelessly to ensure that everything is done to the highest standard. All reviews are shown to the staff who on some occasions cannot quite believe what they read.

Hmmm, where to begin. Not a luxury hotel at all more a 2 to 3 star I would say. When we arrived it looked great, nice gardens and easy parking adjacent to the accommodation. When we checked in the welcome was decidedly "cool" I said to my wife he looks and sounds as though he doesn't like his job.We were shown our room which was booked and guaranteed by credit card for the minimum two night stay at $330 dollars a night . We expected 5 stars as per the Woodbyne web site, but soon knew we were going to be disappointed. Our room was a good size bot smelt damp and the furniture was musty, the cobwebs were every where especially in the wardrobe. We looked out onto distant view most obscured by a tall evergreen hedge. The widow opened but the catch was broken so the wind constantly closed it ! We turned on the air conditioner and tried to clear the damp smell, eventually we purchased a Glen 20 and sprayed the room , which did help.
The bed was large and not a problem, in fact it was good. The TV on the other hand is the smallest size (cheapest brand) and has only free to air programs excluding ABC channels which did not work. For $330 a night we should expect Austar/Foxtel!!
The bathroom had no heating, cheap toiletries (shampoo & conditioner) no niceties at all. The floor was not clean in the corners and why did we have to have BLACK towel? HMMM!!
Tea and coffee was provided but only sachets, plunger coffee was and extra ($330 a night remember) there was long life milk but not biscuits.
The best part of the stay apart from leaving was the breakfast which was of a good standard and exactly what we were expecting.
If you plan to stay here I would suggest you don't there are MUCH better places near by, if you do well you have been warned.

Room Tip: Any room in another B&B.....

This elderly couple from the Southern Highlands came to stay with us in December 2011 for a weekend. We respond to the matters raised by them as follows.

Firstly, we do not rate ourselves as 5 star or anything else. Our website has no reference to a star rating as it is purely subjective and the system so outdated.

It is unfortunate that the room may have smelt damp. This probably was due to the carpets in all the guest rooms being washed and cleaned earlier in the week prior to their arrival. The issue of cobwebs has been discussed with our housekeeping staff and they are now aware that they must also pay constant attention to all areas 2 metres above their heads. This is the country and no matter how often you brush the cobwebs they return soon after.

With regard to the TV, the size that we purchased was dependant upon the shelf space available in the enclosed room cupboard. Unlike most chain hotels, our televisions are not pieces of room furniture!!! What brand is the cheapest TV? – ask Harvey Norman what’s on special. Our TV’s are tuned to all Sydney channels including the ABC, however, on some occasions, which are beyond our control, the signal beamed from mountain tops many miles away is affected by the trees on the property, atmospheric conditions and other factors (wind and storms).

The bathrooms do have heating but why you would require that in the middle of Summer is puzzling. The rooms, including the bathroom, are very effectively heated and cooled with the reverse cycle air conditioners installed in each room. The black towels are loved by our guests who are most complimentary about them.

The reviewer has mentioned the room rate of $330 a couple of times and this indicates to us that he has never had the pleasure of running his own business or is aware of the cost of Austar/Foxtel per room particularly when the rooms are not in use every night like in the cities. Many of our guests are self employed people who appreciate the costs of running any type of business.

At no time during their stay did the reviewer discuss any of these issues with us. Most could have been resolved or explained on the spot.

The reviewer may have been more comfortable staying at one of the many cloned, chain hotels in Sydney and not in the country.

I wanted to like this place. The gardens are spectacular. The public rooms are lovely. But then it drops off.

Upon arriving (at 4pm) we were greeted with "we just rang you to see where you were" because the proprietor wanted to go into Berry. Not a big issue, but not good to be made to feel a little guilty at the outset. At check-in we asked about internet access and we were given the password & told about the charges - not a problem. Except it didn't work - not on our iPad or PC. Went back to reception - no-one to be found. There was a "Ring this number if reception is unattended" sign at reception - rang it a few times - no answer.

The room itself was probably nice a few years ago, but desperately in need of refurbishment. Dirty white sofa and carpet in the mini bar area was manky. Black towels - I'm sure they were clean - but the black is offputting, and lots of little signs telling you what to do. Not quite Fawlty Towers, but created the impression. Terrible mosquitoes at night - to open the windows you need to open the screens, and dozens of them crept in during those few moments. We spent most of the night squashing them.

Breakfast was adequate, although when I picked up a plate to put toast on there was a squashed used peanut butter sachet under it. I handed it to the proprietor and her response was "Oh".

When checking out we mentioned the non-operational internet access and received an argument: "it works for everyone else". We weren't charged for it, but as we were on a work trip, not having it was a pain, and being given grief about it was inexcusable.

In short, I think this was a very nice place when first set up, but it's a bit tatty now. If the management were charming you could overlook it, but they are a little condescending. It's a pity, as the setting is beautiful. It just needs nicer people who will put a bit of money into it.

This reviewer is obviously a teacher as indicated by the pseudonym. The reviewer booked a Saturday night only stay which we do not normally consider as per our website. At her request, we arranged a booking for 2 massages in their room for 3pm and 4pm. As the masseuse had been waiting for over an hour, we decided at 4pm to contact the guests to find out their ETA as there may have been traffic problems etc. We left a message on their mobile phone. Why we were regarded as rude on their arrival is a mystery.

Our internet access was working and we cannot be held responsible if guests
cannot operate their equipment. We have since turned the access off as
there is no demand for it as most guests have their iphones and ipads. We
are unsure as to why these guests needed our access when they had their own
ipad and PC.
As a small country hotel, it is impossible to have the reception desk manned 24 hours a day. However, we are usually contactable if required as we live on the property.

We do not accept the reviewers criticisms of the rooms and its furnishings etc. Many of our sophisticated guests who have used the room just love it. With regard
to the “terrible mosquitoes”, the bay windows in the room open out to the
gardens so of course you need to open the insect screens first. If you do
this at night with all lights in the room turned on then of course you are
going to attract some insects. To try and assist all of our guests who do not understand this we have placed insect sprays and repellents in the rooms. In this case they apparently were not located.
This is a country property as most guests are aware!!!!

As a generalisation, guests should understand that it is difficult to be charming to those who are inconsiderate, offhanded, discourteous and lack basic social skills.

Readers should refer to the many other reviews posted on Tripadvisor by this reviewer who has been so critical of many other establishments and draw your own conclusions.

In our view, this response dose not contain speculation as to the identity of the
reviewer; and the comments are not of a personal nature but of the appropriate facts.

Obviously there is a distinction between a weekend at Woodbyne and a wedding at Woodbyne.
Woodbyne is a beautiful place, the gardens, the rooms, the breakfast - all true BUT...
For five star prices you will not get five star treatment.
The proprietors
* increased prices two weeks before the wedding with no notice nor explanation - a matter of courtesy I would think
* charged an extra $1000 to have photos taken in the garden - even though you are required to book out all the rooms at $330 per night, minimum 2 nights
* charged a $900 rubbish removal fee (all in the contact but incredulous isn't it?)
* didn't have a signing table set up and made our celebrant organise it herself at the last minute (we did check with the owners first and they assured us they would do it)
* had to be asked to clean the chairs (which we had to set up ourselves) and also clean the ones inside
* advertise that they can fit 60 people easily into the "school room" but this requires you to have tables set up on the verandah out of view of all the proceedings
* charged my daughter $35 extra to have her 2 year old sleep in the same bed as her. They don't provide bedding for children for health reasons!
* the drink service was appalling. Guests were told to empty their glass before getting a refill. They were told where to sit to drink, not to take their glasses out onto the verandah. By 8.30 there was a queue at the bar and a 10 minute wait to get a drink. Service virtually stopped at 9pm. RSA was used as an excuse although no guests were overly enebriated and all were either staying on premises or travelling on the bus we had organised
* insulted both our musician/singer and our MC and harassed the band
* ordered the band to stop playing at 9.30pm not allowing the final song and farewell to the bride and groom. Guests were unsure what was happening and started to leave. We paid up to 10pm
* have a security guard harassing guests as they were leaving including the ones who were staying overnight (please note we are very respectful, well-behaved people who did not cause any damage or any problems)
* stomped loudly along the verandah at 6.30am collecting rubbish which we would have happily done at a more reasonable hour
* chastised guests who arrived for breakfast at 9.35am - 9.45am being cut off time

If you are considering a wedding at Woodbyne I would urge you to go over every detail of the contract and read all their silly little rules. Make sure you are on the same page as the owners. As long as you are prepared to do EVERYTHING their way you won't have a problem.
Another way to gauge their reputation is to ask around Berry. Sadly we did that after the wedding - wish we had done it before we signed on the dotted line.
Also, ask to sign their guest book! Guess what? THEY DON"T HAVE ONE! I wonder why?

We were recently guests at Woodbyne for a four night stay. The hotel is a stylish boutique establishment and as a small private hotel we were aware that it wouldn’t offer ‘usual’ hotel services. Having said that, it was exactly what we needed after a hectic week and a half with friends and family in Sydney before we returned back to Singapore. The hosts were as available or not as we wanted them to be – just our cup of tea. When we wanted local knowledge or advice on our activities for the day, we were able to seek their knowledge and guidance, and if we wanted to wander the grounds, enjoy the lounge area or remain in the sanctuary of our room without any contact, we were left to our own devices – this, for us, exemplifies boutique, private hotel service. Our room was simply but elegantly furnished with a wonderful landscape vista of the lush Berry-countryside - the non-stop rain for almost the entire four days contributed to the lushness but certainly didn’t dampen our spirits to explore and enjoy the area and wider surrounds. The bed was comfort-plus and as certified breakfast connoisseurs we were impressed with the fresh, local produce ensuring our bodies were well-rested and bellies well-fed for an energising start to each day. The property entrance is located on a main highway, but we weren't bothered by the traffic in the slightest. A triphappypair recommended establishment!
