“Good location but noisy hot rooms”
Reviewed 27 February 2014 via mobile

Really big and good for meeting people but the rooms were boiling and very noisy. The kitchen and bathrooms weren't very clean but there was free wifi. Good location but not clear how to.check in on arrival as we were after reception had closed

We were fed up with 8 bed dorms so treated ourselves to a 2 bed room since it was the same price as a 16 bed dorm! The staff were friendly and the whole hostel felt homely. The room was fine, clean and had a fan. The bathrooms were a bit rubbish, the shower was basically a hose and the floors was really dirty. It had a great location, right in the centre of Byron and there was lovely different areas within the hostel. They had a tv room. The kitchen was nice, really clean and organise with lots of storage space. The wifi was free which was good but it was quite slow because everyone used it at the same time. It had a quite nice pool area which I loved. I would recommend this hostel for meeting lots of people because everyone was really friendly!

The positives...
Awesome location for beach and town
Free WiFi
Bring your own alcohol
Big TV Room
Good outdoor seating area
Ok kitchen
Small swimming pool
Helpful reception staff

Negatives
Very dirty!
The toilets were not good, dirty floors, shower and toilets.
The rooms were also dirty and we had messy inconsiderate room mates who left their stuff everywhere (granted this is not the hostels fault).
The TV room was filthy, the people who clean are I assume backpackers who have no idea how to clean properly. Sorry but its true.
The WiFi wasn't great if there were other people using it but hey it was free so can't complain.
There were people sleeping/crashing on the sofas and watching TV until the next morning even though there are signs everywhere saying 11pm all communal areas must be vacated and our room was next to. the TV room.

Basically this could be an amazing hostel if it was cleaned better, as a backpacker I don't expect it to be sparkling clean but I do except a good standard of cleanliness in whatever hostel I stay in.

the dirty rooms bathrooms and kitchen were a low point here the kitchen wasn't well equipt and some toilets and showers didn't have locks. It is not a good place for people to get together as the comunal areas are far from ideal and the staff seemed quite unhappy and un helpfull for example it was cold and drafty as it was low season they did not have heaters and the blanket they provided was scratchy and smelly i would not recomend.

This was an average place. It needs some tender love and care and it could be great. We were not here long so we were happy to stay but I am sure there are better in the area.

The location could not be better though. Its right in the centre. The rooms are very basic. Free wifi and the staff were cool. So some things good, some bad.

I will preface this review with: Do not stay at this hostel if you enjoy having copious amounts of space and privacy.

With that being said, the Main Beach Backpackers Hostel is located very centrally in Byron Bay. It is close to various shops and not even a five minute walk from the main beach. It costs $30 a night for one night in a 6 person-shared, and $28 or $26 every night after. It costs $28 for a 16-person shared room.

The hostel provides a lot of amenities that some places don't, especially in Byron Bay. The front desk staff was really helpful and kind. There is free wifi, albeit the signal is weak during the day when a lot of people are on it, and you can leave your luggage at the hostel if you have already checked out and want to explore for the day. They provide you with linens to your bed and there are two shared bathrooms for each sex for the whole place. There is a large dining room/kitchen area so you can save on money and cook food (there's an Aldi down the road...so you can eat very cheaply).

Our room was pretty messy. There were people that had been there a long time and made themselves at home, and it smelled bad. However, most of the people that stayed in our room were really nice and it was good to have a place to cook cheap meals because restaurants in Byron Bay are very pricey.

Overall, I think that this is not a place for people looking for space and tranquility, but a place for people who are not looking to spend much time in their rooms, can deal with the mess, and enjoy proximity.

We spent one night here in a private room which are very basic. The mattress was so thin you could feel the bars underneath and every time you rolled over, the bed squeaked so bad it'd wake you up!

There was partying in the common areas until about 5am and worst than that we literally had people using the corridor outside our room to Skype all night, thank god for earplugs!

Don't stay here, it's dirty, noisy and the other people that do stay here are inconsiderate.

If you like to party this is maybe the place for you.
