“Great place to stay in Byron”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

Fab location, easy walk into town or to the beach. Friendly and helpful owners (thank you for the loan of the board!). Great relaxed breakfasts which really set you up for the day. Facilities all clean and tidy with everything you need. Superb to hear the surf and the kookaburras. Who needs a swimming pool when the ocean's so close.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Baystay. Lovely gardens with many colorful birds and flowers, and John and Jane were wonderful, engaging hosts. A new puppy was of great interest to our 2 daughters, and they were allowed to ask for the lead and take the 9 month old dog (Cino, as in 'cappuCINO') on a walk when they wanted. John hung out to visit upon invitation and we really enjoyed talking with him over a glass of wine. Jane is fun and both hosts are kid-savvy. Wonderful breakfasts with dozens of colorful lorakeets (almost hard to talk over them, they were so loud!), and great location, close to town. The only issue that we couldn't resolve was that the bed was too short - my husband is 6'2'', and his feet hung off the end of the bed! Not much to be done about that, but I recommend an upgrade for the 2 room suite. Otherwise, coffee & tea, basic cooking facilities provided, beach towels were loaned and any concerns we had were graciously and quickly attended to. Lovely stay at the Baystay - we hope to return one day...

Room Tip: The double suite (one full and 2 twins, in separate rooms) is great for families. Ask for a room tha...

A great friendly place, we arrived late and John sorted everything out for us, stayed 1st night next door with Leanne which is lovely and came to Baystay for excellent breakfast. Next day moved into Baystay downstairs with own jacuzzi bath and sauna for 3 nights then back to Leannes next door. Lovely place really peaceful and relaxing. A great friendly place with super cool owners.
Good Wifi so could skype kids at home unlike anywhere in New Zealand!!
Could do with electric hob built in but John provided a portable one so no probs and maybe aircon would help as a little hot at night but only minor points. If you get the chance stay there its worth it!
Thanks

We had a four night stay here and really enjoyed it.
The return of the original owners seems to have got sorted a couple of the issues mentioned elsewhere. (particularly the spa room windows)

The lovely beach is under ten minutes and town a similar stroll. The beauty of this is the accesibility of everything twinned with peace and quiet. It`s opposite a park/rec and on the edge of a residential area so you hardly even hear a car go by.

As stated elsewhere if it`s boutique luxury you`re after this isn`t really the place but the room we had was fine for us with seperate lounge, fridge, small tv etc.

Breakfast time was a treat. Bit unsure initially about an 8am kick off but it was great to wake to the birdsong. Had a lovely combination of cereal and fruit etc followed by something warm which was different each day- croissants, pancakes etc with limitless drinks, toast, really interesting conversation with friendly owners. The friendly dog was in attendance too.

It`s easy enough to find and we got dropped off/picked up by one of the three airport shutle companies.
The B&B is the right side of town for a decent walk up to the lighthouse and we saw turtles, dolphin, rays etc in the clear waters. Plenty of good places in town for food and drink.
Particular recommendations would be the `street food` at Asia Joes and a venture to the Byron Bay brewery for their taster tray of six different beers(small glasses!).
There`s enough to justify a few hours bike ride but otherwise Byron is agreat place to relax and the Baystay contributed to that.

What can we say about the Baystay B&B? -

The owners are the nicest couple, really friendly and welcoming. They have a little poodle called Chino who is the cutest dog ever! Really placid and friendly, good with kids too.

Breakfast is from 8-9am and is worth getting up early for! I'm at Baystay as i write this and have to leave at 7am tomorrow, gutted we have to miss breakfast!

Easy place to find, just a 5 minute walk from the Greyhound bus stop (middle of town) to Marvell street - just over the rec grounds.

5 minute walk to the beach, spectacular sunsets and crystal clear waters - one of the best beaches we've seen (that includes Thailand!)

Byron has some great shops to look around and some really nice places to eat. (The Balcony has excellent Tapas for a treat - some bars have lots of live music, really nice)

The rooms are spotless, the garden is well kept and tropical and the bathroom/kitchen area is faultless.

One of the most relaxing stays we've had since coming to Australia and we most certainly will come back.

Thanks again to the owners - Their hospitality really made the stay extra special.

We booked the Baystay based on other reviews and the information on their website. Out of all the places we stayed in Australia the Baystay was a big disappointment despite being the most expensive place we stayed. The location is great - 5/10 minutes walk to centre of Byron Bay and the beach. The garden is lovely and we really enjoyed our breakfasts on the terrace. We stayed in the double studio which we felt had seen better days - the living room furniture was dated and the kitchen and bathroom, as well as needing a good overall clean, could do with a revamp as surfaces and units etc have seen better days. When we arrived there was no-one to meet us and no instructions left - luckily we only had to wait 15 minutes. The studio has two rooms and, what we found strange, was that the room we didn't use was then locked up, despite it having access to a small seating area outside - when we asked if we could have the room open to use the outside area we were told this wasn't possible. We had to for an extra bedside lamp as only one, a hair dryer and more hangers - all provided on request albeit reluctantly. The Baystay has WiFi and the password was given to us with reluctance as it was intimated other guests had used it too much. The hosts at the Baystay were there on a temporary basis and leaving that weekend - they were friendly and helpful (despite our initial issues) but we kind of got the impression that they were winding down.

We stayed there for 5 nights and had a very good time. It´s a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and a 10-15 min walk to the center. Location is great as it´s quiet and peaceful but just a short walk to the main scene. Room is quite basic but has aircon, microwave and a little fridge. TV is indeed quite old but you are in byron bay, why would you be watching tv anyway?
Beakie was simple but very good, with bread, jam, fruit, cereal, sometimes muffins or croissants.
Annie and Jack were very friendly, great hosts. We left on the 14th of January and found out that Annie and Jack are leaving and the previous owners were taking over again on the 15th of January so I am not quite sure if the place will be run the same way. Hopefully they will.

Room Tip: We had the little studio (outside the house) and were really happy with it
