Nice atmosphere but dirty and noisy rooms. Deals from 32 for a night 31 for 2 and 30 for a week which is really not much different) Had stayed in a room which two girls live there and that was a complete mess, things thrown everywhere!!! Staff is really friendly and helpful though.

Belongil was a cheap-ish option for our family of 4 for an overnight stay in Byron. We stayed in a 2 bedroom (actually one bedroom and mezzanine room) 'cottage' - basically a glorified on-site van. Service was pretty much as you'd expect; gruff, a little surly but reasonably efficient nonetheless.

The accommodation was very basic, with a small kitchen and bathroom, ancient TV and minimal furnishings. At the price....well, you'd only pay it for this standard of accommodation in Byron.

Beach is opposite, there is a decent cafe next door and 'backpacker' facilities such as internet cafe and kitchen are available. It'd be a good 15 minute walk into town along the beach, and there is not terribly much to do or see in the area. You will most likely need your own transport to stay here.

A small annoyance - we were charged a key deposit, but were unable to get it back as we left before the office opened the next morning. Not terribly impressed by that.

after 7 months on the road I found Belongil by mistake. I think after finally leaving after an extra 2 week stay that Belongil is one of the places that finds you. definitely something newage energy happening there. A lot of the guys had been round australia and had come back!! that pretty much says it all.

Place was basic but overpriced. On checking into our luxury studio room we found the bathroom was smelly, the reason was that the toilet was broken with a large poo floating in it. The slim, middle aged lady at the front desk was quite rude and unpleasant, and seemed to gain satisfaction from inconveniencing us. Not nice people.

Recently stayed @ Beautiful Byron Bay for the week-end with some old friends. We chose the Belongil Beachouse for the location across from the surf beach & for the value for money. It`s only ten minute walk to the main shopping & restaurants & night clubs. They have a courtesy bus to take you into the township & return trip back. A very lay back accommodation scene, extremely friendly & helpful staff.Good value compared with other areas of Byron .Older style accommodation but clean & a place you could call home away from home, casual relaxed atmoshere.Happy visitor.Sharon

This place is fine to stay, but has not really convinced me in all dimensions. I went there because it was featured in the Lonely Planet East coast Australia guide, dated from 2008. Maybe the place was in a better conditioning at that time, but when I stayed there (September 2010) it felt a little run down.

Accommodation: Lonely Planet suggested to stay in one of the private doubles which I have not seen as I was travelling on my own and therefore can only comment on the dorms. Dorm size is alright, 4 bed dorms (2 bunks). No lockers in the room though and just one small drawer – you got to live out of your backpack. Only one electricity plug and one main light. The dorm I stayed in did not have air con and the fan was broken. A couple of dorms together share a bathroom and as far as I was informed, my dorm would share a bathroom with 5 other ones. This would mean 20 people at full capacity sharing one shower and one toilet. Not too good if you ask me, but it seems that in Byron Bay it is not common to take a daily shower (either because of going into the sea every day or because of being part of the hippie culture… not sure ;-)). Either way, the bathroom is quite small and definitely needs to get cleaned more often (I recommend flipflops!). Shower got hot though.

Location: The place is located a bit out of town. The homepage says it would be a 10min walk to town, but it took me almost 25min at face pace. They told me it would be 10min via the beach, but maybe not always an option as impossible during high tide or depending on your footwear. This is not a problem if you only need a ride to town once or twice a day as they offer a free shuttle bus departing every 30-60min. If you want to go to town or get back after 9pm though, you have to take a cab or walk. They hire bikes, but better get one down town as they are much cheaper. The hostel is located directly at Belongil Beach which is a very nice and quiet beach! And there is a small café/restaurant next to it in case you don’t want to go out to grab some food.

Facilities: The hostel has a laundry machine as well as a huge kitchen area. The equipment in the kitchen looks alright although I haven’t been using it. The capacity of the fridge is huge, but the state of it is just gross. Dirty, sticky, lots of old food stains… this definitely needs cleaning. Had some serious thoughts of putting my food in there although covered in a plastic bag. Found it rather inconvenient that they lock the kitchen between 10pm and 7am. So if you are hungry after 10pm or need to get up before 7am, you can’t use the kitchen. There is no WiFi available, but two computers with internet access at 1$ per 15min.

Overall: I am not really sure what to think of this place. People here seem to really enjoy it, heaps of people seem to stay for a couple of weeks or even longer. Maybe the other hostels aren’t any better. It's definitely safe to stay at this place, but you might want to have a look at the other places too. In case you are coming to Byron Bay for some serious partying (which I was not), better stay somewhere more central to avoid late night taxi rides.

I loved staying at Belongil, right across the road from the beach, just far enough out of town but walking distance along the beach - with dolphins sometimes to escort you!!!
Set amongst the trees, with wildlife always to be seen. The Treehouse cafe next door for the occasion food, drink and live music on weekends.
Cheapest and best in town! Very accomodating for the solo traveller.
Love you Belongil - i'll be back!!!
xx
