“Prime location and top hotel”
Reviewed 25 April 2009

we've just spent 3 nights at this hotel. We had a garden room which at $195 (Approx £95) we though to be good value, this included a continental breakfast. the room was very large and well decorated and furnished and opened onto the garden with the pool a few feet further on. Byron has got to be one of our favourite places in Oz and this hotel is the hub of eveything going on. we were lucky enough to be there during Busking over Byron week and had a great time.

Having wanted to stay there since visiting Byron 18 years ago, we booked in to our room on the first floor with a balcony with a glimpse of the ocean. Large room was very outdated (maybe exactly as it was 18 years ago!) For the very high room charge we would have expected to have bath robes, a room safe and a radio of which there was none.

This hotel really relies upon its location to charge extremely high rates ($500pn for a motel room!) in very tired and dated rooms. I do not think a cent has been spent on the rooms since the hotel opened many years ago. There was no extra charge made for the rat running around in the reception area howver!

I have been to Byron Bay many times before and always enjoyed my time there. However, after my latest trip I will think twice about returning (specifically to the Beach Hotel). With its prime location, the Beach Hotel has the potential to be one of the best hotels in Australia. That is, until you actually stay there. Never have I been made to feel more unwelcome in my travels, with the staff unfriendly, unaccommodating and unwilling to assist me in any manner whatsoever. I was disgusted.

I recommend Byron to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, just don’t let this place ruin your experience.

We were led to believe this was the best palce to stay... What a rude surprise we received. Rude staff, inept service and filthy rooms. Byron Bay desrves better from the "benchmark" hotel. This place simply thrives oof its location and reputation. DO NOT stay there. Over priced and terrible.

Having visited Byron Bay over half a dozen times and only spending time drinking at the Beach Hotel, I thought it was time to stay there.

After a long drive from Sydney, our check in was quick and we were shown upstairs to our nice spacious Garden room. The bed was comfortable and the sliding door, which opened out to the pool was a beautiful view to wake up to in the morning.

Breakfast was a delicious variety of organic fruits, toast, muesli and yoghurt. It was a great location, opposite the beach and near the shops. We didn't have a problem with noise, even though the Hotel plays some loud music!

I would definitely stay there again!

My wife and I stayed 5 nights at the Beach Hotel in April 2008. As the bedroom roof leaked on the second night of our stay, with water dripping onto our bed during the night, it is most unlikely that this review will be replete with praise and commendations for the hotel - and it isn't. But to be fair and balanced, I can say some good things about this hotel, before I turn my attention to the bad. As most reviewers have reported, the outstanding feature of the Beach Hotel is its position, at the beach end of Johnson Street, the main street in town. There are 25 units either on the ground or first floor. Our unit (number 16) was on the upper floor, offering limited sea views, but the shruberry surrounding the balcony needs to be pruned soon or all views will disappear. We had a large, open plan room with balcony. There was an attractive pool area with spa at ground level. Under-cover car parking was available, and this was very useful to us, as we had hired a rental car. On-street parking in Johnson Street at the beach end is very difficult to find, and parking is limited to only an hour or two. Limited room service is available to rooms, and we utilized this on one night of our stay. Continental breakfasts were included in our room tariff and were good, with an excellent array of fresh fruits, juices, breads and cereals. But cooked meals were expensive. I tried an Asian omelette one morning. It cost $16 and was overcooked and dry.
Our major complaint was the leaking roof. It goes without saying that a hotel room of any standard should be weatherproof and watertight, and ours wasn't. My complaint next morning to reception was met with the comment: "It shouldn't happen again". She failed to use the word "wouldn't". So there was some suspense in Room 16 the following night, as rain had continued. But no leaks occured, to the immense relief of my wife and me. Room lighting should be bright enough to enable guests to read newspapers and books. But the subdued room lighting was so dim that reading was impossible. Dimmer switches are the answer, so that guests can choose the lighting that best suits them and their mood, but in our room we had the choice of dim or dim. While our room was generally quiet and not affected by outside noise from the nearby street or the hotel's bar and band area, the plumbing noise in adjoining rooms was a major distraction. There was excessive noise from running water in the pipes to toilets, showers and baths in nearby rooms.
The major income earner of the Beach Hotel is its huge bar and bistro trade. Its open air bar attracts hundreds of drinkers. So accommodation income is but a sideline here. More money needs be spent on maintenance works, if the Beach Hotel is to maintain the standards expected of a $340 per night hotel.

  • Liked — The hotel's location to the beach and town
  • Disliked — The leaking roof and the hotel's casual reaction to the problem
