The Oasis Resort & Treetop Houses

Reviewed 1 April 2013

My partner and I booked a treetop house for a long weekend in March for our anniversary. We stayed in the Sandpiper, which was charming, but a little dated - creaky stairs, peeling wood, leaking pipes. Nothing too bad though. We did notice that the house seemed to sway in the wind, which was a little worrying!

We absolutely loved sitting in the spa at night, looking at the stars. However, we would have loved it even more if you could change the temperature of the spa - it's locked on 37 degrees. It would have been nice to set it to cool so we could lounge in it on hot days.

A couple of things we found a bit annoying: the hotel management says they have Austar, but they use this term very loosely. They actually only have about 10 channels - sky news, nick for kids and some sports channels - and even then they didn't all work. It bucketed down one day we were there and we would've appreciated more channels. Also, it wasn't easy to work out how to get on to Austar, and there were no instructions provided. We had to call the manager to come to the house and work it out for us. Not a big deal, because you don't go on holidays to watch TV, but I think advertising that the place has Austar it is generous. We ended up just renting movies from one of the local video stores - yes they still exist in Byron!

Another thing that was slightly annoying is that they didn't provide us with the WiFi password straight away, we had to go up to the office and ask for it. I would've thought they'd just give it to you when you check in.

We had lots of ants coming through the kitchen and living area, even though we didn't leave any food out. They do provide some insect spray, but it was a bit annoying to have to wake up and spend a few minutes killing ants each morning.

The two bedrooms had air conditioning, but even with them both on full blast, it wasn't enough to cool the house down. The washing machine was difficult to operate, I had to turn it on and off at the plug a few times to get it to work.

The pool is nice and big, but definitely needs a refurbishment. The change room door jammed while I was in it and it took me a good 5 minutes of banging and leaning on it to get myself out of there! I'd hate to think how someone with claustrophobia would cope if they got stuck!

We really liked that the complex was away from the noise of central Byron, though it's not far at all, an easy walk or quick drive. We also loved that it was close to Tallow Beach, which is nowhere near as crowded as the other beaches, though you have to be careful because there are dangerous rips and it isn't patrolled. The management were very nice and helpful when we asked them about the Austar and WiFi.

Despite a few hiccoughs, we enjoyed our stay here, but I think it's a tad overpriced considering it's a bit dated and the facilities aren't quite up to scratch (though Byron generally is a bit overpriced!). To be fair, it was just 2 of us in the house, but they're large enough to share between a group, so if you split it 3 or 4 ways then it would be good value. I would come here again in a group or with another couple, but I'm not sure about just the 2 of us, unless they updated the place.

Room Tip: Treetop houses are more secluded. Sandpiper was a bit dated, though all the houses are different so...

We recently stayed at the Oasis in unit 11 and couldn't have been more impressed. The bed was brand new and was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. I'm not sure about what Melissa D has written because it was so clean and modern. The lovely managers told me that the unit has recently had a number of updates and it has really paid off- totally refurbished bathrooms, new outdoor furniture, air conditioning, brand new TV and fridge. Will definately request this unit again. Loved our stay.

Room Tip: Request 11!

My family and I stayed in Apartment 11 on our road trip. Initially I was a little taken aback and disappointed because Unit 11 - and 7 for that matter - look NOTHING LIKE the images on the website. As it turns out, each unit is individually owned and some are renovated beautifully - ASK FOR UNITS 13 &14 as they are the BEST - and some are well a bit dingy and in need of repair.
Our unit was OK. The walls were a bit dirty, the blinds had mould spots on them and the doors were scratched up and needed repainting. There is a range button by the oven thats actually busted (it needs to be replaced because thats a bit dangerous) and the bed was probably the most uncomfortable and worst we slept on for our whole road trip (we stayed in 6 places).
But these shortcomings were made up for by the lovely staff, nice amenities and fantastic location. Quite frankly you can't really be unhappy when you're in Byron and according to the lovely staff the units are being renovated all the time. We will definitely be coming back BUT we WILL call and book direct so we can get a nice newly renovated unit with decent comfortable beds.

Room Tip: Call up and book directly with them to get the nicest apartments available!

We loved this resort. Our three children ( 9, 10 and 12) loved the proximity to the pool, tennis court and games room and we could sit on our private balcony and supervise from a distance, watching the birds in the national park and beyond to the ships out at sea, although its fair to say it is just ocean glimpses. Unfortunately it rained one day, but there is so much to do here that the kids didn't mind. The management team are wonderful... nothing is too much trouble and they give great advice about local attractions. As this was our first time to Byron that was a real advantage. As some of the units are unrenovated make sure to ask for a renovated one on the top floor. We stayed in Unit 12 and it was very clean with a proper kitchen and laundry which is a plus for a family. You do need a car though as it is out of town, but we've decided to come back here as it is only 2 minutes from all the various beaches and much quieter than many of the places we saw in town.

Room Tip: We were happy with unit 12

Large 2 bed apartment overlooking the pool. Had absolutely everything we needed. Didn't get chance to use the spa, tennis courts etc but they all looked fab. The pool was a nice temperature. Our only slight criticism was the distance from the centre of Byron, it was over a mile and a half but we should've checked the map when booking. Would definitely recommend!

We are a family of 4 with 2 young children (aged 5 and 7 at the time). We stayed in the Currawong cottage at Oasis for the last week of August in 2012. The owners were unfailingly helpful and kind, lending us boogie boards for the whole week that we just kept with us. They recommended day trips and even phoned around to find out where we could get a whale-watching trip. The cottage was lovely - comfortable, well-maintained and with a lovely terrace with a view of the ocean. We even saw whales! It was lovely to have a hot tub (as the weather was still a little cold!) Location-wise it was perfect - an easy drive from the town and a pleasant walk to Tallow Beach. We would definitely come back to stay in one of the treetop cottages - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Go for one of the treetop cottages - more expensive but very nice indeed!

My husband stayed at the Oasis during the recent storms from ex tropical cyclone Oswald. Although the weather wasn't quite what we expected, we had a wonderful stay at the Oasis. Julia, Jeremy and the team were incredibly hospitable and helpful and they even predicted that our flight would be cancelled and that we needed to stay longer! They were incredibly accommodating and made sure we were well looked after, even during the power outages. We hope to return when the weather is not quite as chaotic, but we highly recommend a stay at the Oasis!

Room Tip: Room 14 is fabulous!
