“NOT 'ECO' FRIENDLY AT ALL. Don't support this business.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2009

SHAME ON THIS PLACE. If you care about the environment, then you will hate what these people have done with the title of their hotel.

The hotel rooms are nice and new. Don't get me wrong, a great place to stay at, great just out of town location. Five min walk to town. There are three catches though.

1. You have to take out your own rubbish at the end of your stay or else be fined $30. I have never stayed at paid accommodation where you have to do this. Its a minor point though, this would not stop me going back.

2. There is no room 'clean up' except for those staying 8 nights or more. Now, a place where you are going to the beach everyday means that you are constantly leaving sand in the room and shower. I could not walk bare foot in the room as I hated the feeling of the sand on the tiled floor and got sick of having to dust off my feet before hopping into bed. The towels also get a bit stale after two days, so i feel sorry for those having to stay for 8 nights before getting a fresh towel.

3. MOST IMPORTANT TO US...I hate that these people have placed 'Eco' into their name when their hotel has nothing Eco friendly about it. The main thing that made us catch onto this was that there was no fan in the rooms, and so for air flow its either the air con or the hot air from the windows, and windows are not an option in Byrons summer if there is no breeze.
When i returned home i called them up as a potential customer and asked how their hotel was Eco friendly, since its in their name. The lady stumbled a little at the start, possibly lost for words. She then began to explain that they are Eco friendly because...wait for it.....'we re-use paper, and when the light globes blow, we replace them with the energy efficient ones'. This was the crappiest example of Eco I have ever heard...does not every household / business do this as a basic standard anyway? Oh and also....we noted when we took the rubbish out (to avoid being fined) that we then saw a recycling bin there yet there is no mention of such a bin nor is there a second bin for recycling in the room. We were not prepared to open our bags up to start sorting at this point.

All in all, nice and new. Value for money??? Well, what kind of person is happy to use their towel for 8 nights straight without it being replaced? And for this price, I would expect a nice little sweep of the room each day. I can live without the bed being made.

Even if you dont care about staying at Eco friendly places (I must say, we chose it for location and price), I cannot stand to see people using the term 'Eco' to attract customers when there is no effort towards being 'Eco' at all.

  • Liked — Nice new rooms, good showers
  • Disliked — Their undeserving use of the word 'Eco' in their business name, no change of towels, no housekeeping

There isn't really anything wrong with this no-frills place and I would rate it highly if it were cheaper, but compared with everywhere else we stayed during our month long trip to Australia I thought it was poor value at $155 per night for a studio room. Previous reviewers don't seem to agree with this however, so it may just be that they're more familiar with Byron Bay accommodation costs than I am!

Our room was simple and characterless but clean, comfortable and well equipped, and the lady on reception was very pleasant throughout our stay.

The location is a little further from the centre than you'd probably like, but a 10 minute walk (max) brings you to the shops, restaurants, bars and beach.

  • Disliked — The price - I thought it was fairly average, basic accommodation but the price didn't reflect this.

We stayed in a studio room in Feb 08. It was an enjoyable stay and great value for money. The room was quite small, but had a small kitchen sink with basic facilities and a dishwasher, a large bathroom, king bed and a small balcony. The decor was basic but modern and comfortable. The room and bathroom were very clean. The air conditioner was new, quiet and effective.

The pool and outdoor eating area was really nice at night, although the pool itself was very small so I wouldn't reccommend it for large families who enjoy staying by the pool. Most rooms face towards this area in the centre of the apartments which gave it a nice resort-like feeling.

It is not in the centre of town, but a short 5 minutes walk tops brings you to the main shopping area, there would be no point driving. There is a path through the back-streets and over the railroad that takes you to the larger, more deserted Belongil beach. It is a bit hard to find, but the staff can point it out to you.

All in all, a nice stay if you are looking for value for money, it was clean and comfortable however a quicker walk to the beach would have been nice.

  • Liked — Clean and comfortable - good value
  • Disliked — The walk to the beach was not direct like some other hotels on the street

I found the accommodation to be really good, very clean, modern and nice. The bed was really comfortable. A couple of blocks away from the heart of Byron Bay, yet in a quiet street so there is no real noise distraction. The pool was pretty small, but the spa was good. I would definitely come and stay here again.

  • Liked — Its fairly new accommodation so everything is in a good state
  • Disliked — Nothing

The room was modern ,roomy and had all facilities. Location was good just a short walk to town. Also quiet at night to allow good sleep. Until 7.30am when the cleaner drags a mop bucket around outside your window each morning.

Would recommend staying here for the good standard room but be aware there are staff problems.

We booked through booking agency Wotif which led to some problems. We specified 3 adults but found only bedding for 2 adults on arrival. Staff claim Wotif did not specify 3 adults.

Also be aware check in office closes at 5 pm. If checking in after this, you need to contact reception by phone during office hours to obtain details. They leave your key in a safe at front door. You need to get combination code for safe on the phone. Other couples arriving at the same time as us did not have this information, which indicates a problem that needs to be identified at time of booking. There is an emergency staff mobile number allegedly available if problems occur, but when we rang this it went unanswered. At check in desk next morning staff member refused to believe we had rung this number, until we suggested she check her missed calls. This led to her refusing to admit fault.. I was reminded of TV series Fawlty Towers when it came to attitude. Summed up the attitude was " The Customer Is Always Wrong." We got into an unpleasant discussion with this person, who needs an attitude transplant.

Note: Check in after 5pm is common due to airline schedules to nearby Ballina Airport.

  • Liked — Clean rooms with facilties, modern decor
  • Disliked — Check in staff, hours and procedures.

We have just come back from a weekend away in beautiful Byron Bay and stayed at the Breakfree Eco Beach Resort on Shirley St Byron Bay.

This place is excellent value, clean and is located 8 minutes from the centre of Byron and 10 minutes from the main beach.

We had three people in our group (one couple and one single) and booked rooms 7A and 7B (this constitutes a one bedroom with an ensuite). We booked through the Stella Resorts website [--] and got a great deal. For three nights over a weekend in February $234 per person.

The rooms both had balconies and were extremely quiet. Air con was a welcome comfort and the multi zone region DVD players in these rooms worked well enough.

Staff at the front desk helpful and friendly and having kitchen facilities makes for an inexpensive time away.

I couldn't recommend this place higher and will definitely be returning in the future.
