I approached the place with some trepidation. There were a few people milling around the front door, smoking and eating McDonalds (BTW this place is located in a take away food Mecca) and the general atmosphere of the lobby was that the place was unkempt.

The huge pile of invoices on the reception desk drew my attention "NSW Family and community services - accommodation voucher" and confirmed my suspicion that this place is largely patronised by the homeless. The rooms are functional, clean and the bathroom is a 'portaloo' type. Its cheap, not cheerful and I weould not rush back

I booked a stay at this property as it was super-close to a venue I had to start work at very early the following morning.

A quiet room was requested and duly delivered – on the ground floor at the very end of the corridor, and therefore exempt from some of the traffic and front-desk noise that is inevitable in an uncarpeted, budget property.

‘Compact’ is the best word to describe the layout. Bed was large and comfortable, extra blanket provided.

One very strange aspect of the design is that the toilet/shower 'pod' (very similar to those in cruise ship cabins, elevated off the ground, all in one mould) was at the opposite end of the room to the sink/basin/mirror. With nowhere to hang a towel near the basin, you had to kind of shower, then take your towel with you to the basin for brushing of teeth etc, then take the towel back into the bathroom pod. Maybe a hook and hand-towel near the sink would have been nice?

Toiletries were extremely minimal, but two good-sized towels provided. No tea of coffee making facilities or fridge, but there are vending machines in the lobby.

Air-con/heater unit was quite noisy, but efficient. And the ‘white noise’ generated by the heater was actually a blessing, as it drowned out traffic noise from the busy road outside.

There are loads of fast-food restaurants within minutes’ walk (Sizzler, Hooters, MacDonalds, Oporto and many others).

You know what you are going to get with an Ibis Budget property.

HOWEVER, I had two issues:

1. On check-in, I asked about breakfast, was shown a display which said breakfast was served from 7am. I explained that we would be in a rush in the morning, and would need to be out the door by 7.15am. The gentleman on the desk assured us he would be there nice and early to set up breakfast. So I pre-paid for two. Come 7am, the gate to the reception/breakfast area was still locked and there was no sign of anyone, much less breakfast. At 7.10 we had to leave to get where we were going. When I emailed the property later to complain about having been charged for something we did not receive (quite apart from its not being ready when it was advertised as being available), the Ibis offered me free breakfast next time we visited. That’s a really cheap ‘solution’. It wasn’t even about the money, which wasn’t much. It’s about service, a promise of service, the inconvenience, and then the feeling of being ripped off.

2. I didn’t realise that Ibis Budget stays don’t count towards Accor Le Club points. If I’d known that, I would probably have elected to stay at the slightly-further-away but much more hospitable Mercure property.

I have stayed here several times but this simply reflects on the overpriced alternatives. I booked online provided credit card details and they still demanded to see photo ID. They must attract some undesirables, or think they do. Front office staff were capable but unfriendly and unhappy. I'll stay there again but won't look forward to the experience.

Room Tip: Ground floor rear avoids car park noise.
