The Merino Cafe is a good country cafe. We enjoyed a reasonable breakfast at a reasonable price. The coffee was not especially good, but satisfactory enough. There's a good selection of breakfast and lunch meals.

We think the Merino Cafe is especially good for Gluten Free and Dairy Free meals. We sat inside on a cool morning, but the outside eating areas looked very nice. The service was very good.

We like this country town which has an interesting European history associated with the wool industry.

The Merino Cafe is an excellent break-of-journey cafe just off the Hume Highway in tiny Gunning, a bit under 3 hours from Sydney. Everything they do seems to be good: excellent coffee, fine meals including soups, burgers, frittatas, quiches, salads etc and a very tempting line-up of rich home-made cakes and slices. Not sure of their hours but will still serve you lunch at 3.00 pm, which is not always the case at highway eateries. You can dine inside, out the back in the sunny courtyard or keep an eye on Gunning's comings and goings life from a table out the front. If the weather is fine, pick any of them and you can't lose.

I enjoyed a late Sunday breakfast with family at the Merino cafe recently. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was lovely. Beautiful outdoor seating out the back in the sun. Good place for a motorbike ride from canberra!

It's a little haven on Hume Street, Gunning (I think Hume Street is the old highway)...anyway, what great food!!! The macademia, white chocolate and Anzac biscuit slice is not to be missed...outstanding! The Auissie burger and the lamb burger, so different in flavors , are a knock-out, too. The ladies in the Merino do all the cooking, as in fresh, not trucked in. Who would ever go to a fast food joint again....certainly not us! And breakfast is served all day. The really big breakfast could probably feed a family of four (or one hard-working bushie)! Will definitely be calling in again.

A cafe I thoroughly recommend for anyone heading south west from Sydney/Wollongong. About the 3/3.5 hours out of Sydney it is worth stopping off the highway to see what Gunning is like since it was bypassed.
We did this a couple of Fridays ago-there is no way I can imagine all the Hume Hwy traffic up the main street these days, and isn't that a blessing! Checked up and down the main, there are several options and we opted for the Merino.
Nicely bookish and relaxed inside- my other half commented on the possibilities of sitting through a cold winter afternoon there with books, good coffee and lots of tempting slices begging to be tried. It was a warm end of summer day, though, so we will have to go back for that.
I don't know which of the girls made our coffees but in presentation they were superior to any I've seen on the coast [there have been some superb ones]. The taste lived up to the look. Simple fresh food was excellent and the slices are worth stopping for- not unusual selections, but made on the premises and really well done. Top work Gunning foodies!
