Surf Beach Holiday Park
Ranked #6 of 11 Speciality Lodging in Kiama
Reviewed 26 September 2013

On arriving in Kiama we were taken back by what a beautiful town it was, being members of the larger caravan park groups we decided against staying there, and booked at the Surf Beach Park based only on proximity to the town, beaches & attractions. We booked initially for 2 nights and had our van on the lawn area in the centre of the caravan area, they are well grassed but a bit uneven for our 6.5mtr van. We where then able to move onto a level concrete area with lovely trees bordering both sides of our van making a beautiful secluded area. We ended booking for 7 nights then received our 8th night free. The park was a bit tight manoeuvreing the van in and out but once set up we found the park OK. Amenities block fairly newly revamped, staff all helpful and the environs kept neat and tidy. What a position, great views off the bluff, surf beach one side, sheltered swimming beach the other, great walking tracks to the blow hole, light house, marina and the fantastic little town of Kiama, the only reason we left was to give my feet a rest from all the walking. It is a great place to base yourself to take in all the other tourist attractions and beaches in the area. We have been travelling for 10 weeks through the centre of Aus but would rate our week in Kiama on our way home as one of the most enjoyable parts of our trip. We will return.

Nothing beats the beautiful view from the cliff tops of Kiama. Being right on the point of the Bay was spectacular. We arrived for a two day stay and enjoyed the sound of the sea and the pretty beachside atmosphere of the place. What took us by surprise were the run down cabins. We paid a little over $200 per night (we stayed two nights) and would have liked something less old, less run down, but it was a quick get away and probably sufficed. The lovely glossy brochure is a misleading though if you're expecting 3 star quality. The toilet looked like it could easily fall apart it was so flimsy and the door to the bathroom was what you would expect from a camping cabin. Our own mistake though was to arrive at the Harbour cabins right near the blowholes instread of our booked accomodation which was the Surf Beach Holiday Park. Regrettably when we went to reception they advised us we were at the wrong property. As we left the Harbour cabins we noticed how beautifully maintained and delux the accomodation looked, so our expectations were quite high for the Surf Beach Holiday Park - we were thinking that we'd get similar, but this was not at all the case.

Everyone has to make a living and we understand it's not easy to maintain a park of this size, but it's abit old and tired. The boomgates are a bit odd, but perhaps they've had a rash of cars stolen? Reception was a messy, beaten up interior as well with tired looking people behind the counter (friendly but tired). In summary though, taking everything into consideration, the spot really is lovely - it feels like one of those 1980's camping holidays that a family of four may have taken, with no frills but perfect pristine views. And in those days perhaps the need for quality was less defined or less expected than it is now.

Room Tip: Choose an ocean view cabin if you can.

The Surf Beach Holiday Park has a good location above the beach with a short walk to most attractions and shops. Park needed a renovations as to be expected in off season but the staff were friendly and accommodating.

Room Tip: The cabins are roomy and good for families.

look wherever you stay there will be some issue or another we have stayed here many a time in our caravan and also in cabins Tony is a great bloke may not be super man but is multi skilled and if there is something he can sort out for you he will. The best part for me is you are right on the point with a great view next to surf beach and a short walk or better still bike ride on the track into town and past the blowhole on the way with great coffee shops chocolate shops craft/souvenir shops. Trust me happy wife happy life she will like it too. Last time we stayed in the new 3 bedroom cabin with the inlaws and 2 grown up kids and even with very windy weather all enjoyed the stay, plenty of room and clean even by my wife's and inlaws standard which is so high I'm surprised they agreed to have me in the cabin with them! If there was one negative it would be if windy and camping make sure everything is pegged down well and get rugged up it does copp it a bit.
Make sure you have lunch in the fisherman's club in Gerroa or an early dinner to get the view which is fantastic or fish and chips from the kiama harbour side fish shop (always a big serve from our experience at least) and bring a pair of binoculars for spotting whales from just a few steps from your cabin with a couple of camp chairs to take in the view from the point while having your fish and chips and a glass of wine.
we have stayed at several caravan parks and this one is either no 1 or 2 next to Fingal bay but more no 1 because it is a shorter drive from Sydney if going for the weekend.
Lastly they did get an award one year I think , you dont get an award for nothing cheers Ed

Room Tip: if the cabin is a bit pokey as per the other reviews then blow the moths out of your wallet and get...

our stay was not all that bad but on inspection of one of the beds in the three bedroom cabin we found a large urine stain on the mattress under the so called new sheets
upon asking office staff what could be done about the matter we were treated as the ones who did it,and she was nothing but nasty to us
and I can say one thing I will NEVER be going back to that park

Went to this holiday park on the spur of the moment. Found it to be neat and clean, the cabin overlooking the beach side of the park was really nice, with adequate linen and kitchen utensils. It was a great shame the electric BBQ didn't work...we had been hoping for a nice relaxing BBQ on our verandah so went into the supermarket in the town (not a 5 min walk !!) to get food (think prawns !!) for dinner and ended up cooking in a frypan...NOT the same. As we were only there for 2 nights we weren't too fussed but we informed the manager and they tried to fix it for us...no luck...hope this was done for the next group. There is nothing quite like eating a seafood BBQ with the sound of the waves in the background.

We swam in the ocean once and as it was a bit rough and windy we decided to try the pool the next day...but that was out of action as well...most disappointing. I guess being mid week they thought with few children about it wouldn't matter as much...not a good idea folks.

We would stay here again, but would be more vocal about facilities not being in good condition.

Fair facilities and common room, billiards table decent. We were fortunate enough to come across Tony, part time campsite regulator part time legend, and manager of Surf Beach, who entertained us with his local folklore. Would stay again only to see Tony.

Room Tip: Bring a large tent as only one can be erected on site! We made this mistake
