“Great Place to Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

Stayed here for a week-long guided walking tour. The rooms were very comfortable, the food was superb and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The lodge is in a great location on the island, fairly central, so it's easy to get to the start of walks in any direction and easy to get to shops or beaches. The Lodge is not "water-wise" but renovations planned for the next couple of months may address this. The whole Island has taken recycling to a new level and is the benchmark for other Pacific islands.

Wanted a relaxing break for a milestone birthday and Lord Howe delivered. Pine Trees was as expected, basic old fashioned accommodation (the rooms are very basic - almost 1950's but renovations are planned in May/June), full board with good and sometimes great food. The island is unique - you cycle everywhere, the bush walking fairly demanding and if you want to climb Mt Gower it is challenging. The lagoon and Ned's surf beach absolutely beautiful. Pine Trees great for all ages - I thought it would be mainly older age groups but great to see young families there as well. We loved the ability to order a picnic bbq lunch delivered to your chosen location - after a morning cycling, walking, snorkling - just pull up at a supberb location and Pine Trees had everything you needed for a relaxing and tasty lunch. Loved it and would go back without hesitation. We also had fantastic weather with not one drop of rain duirng our week stay - unfortunately for the islanders who were going through drought conditions.

I wanted a few days away from mobile phones and internet with no responsibilities for food or board and not too far away. I live near Port Macquarie and am in my late seventies and Pinetrees was perfect. All meals were included and the quality of the food was excellent. A cut lunch was provided for days out. The lodge is on the flat and an easy walk along the road running next to the lagoon. Staff at the hotel and people all over the island very friendly and helpful. The room I was in was tired but a major refurbishment is happening this winter. There were excursions I could enjoy including a minibus tour by a llong term resident and an afternoon on the lagoon in a glass-bottom boat from which we saw turtles, fish and corals the easy way. I can no longer snorkel but those who did loved it. Would I go again, definitely Yes.

We were so pleased to have chosen Pinetrees for our first stay on Lord Howe Island. We were looking at other accommodation trying to decide, but now that we have been there, this would be our first and only choice every time. The location is perfect with the Boathouse right on the beach, so close to go for a walk along the beach in the morning before breakfast. Was also great for the not so fit, in that it is nice and flat and easy to cycle around and walk to town or to the various water activities. Just seems that everything is so easy from here. Had wondered about the merits of eating in-house against going to various restaurants, but the food was fantastic, fresh, healthy and plenty of variety. Also, so convenient after a busy day of snorkelling, walking or cycling to just freshen up, have a pre-dinner drink and watch the sunset from the boathouse, and enjoy the company of the other guests, then wander in to dinner. A very friendly environment created by Dani and Luke and the staff at Pinetrees. Our first night was rainy and windy and we really appreciated being able to walk just a few steps to our accommodation after dinner(and a couple of excellent wines). Lord Howe itself is unique, it feels like stepping back to a quieter time of life without mobile phones, wifi and we didn't have television, bliss. Pushbikes are inexpensive to hire, and easy with very few cars on the road, a 25k speed limit and all drivers aware of inexperienced cyclists. At Pinetrees, someone comes around at breakfast to ask if you would like lunch in-house or have a picnic lunch or bbq packed. The picnic lunches are delicious and supplied in a small fridge backpack which can fit in the basket of your bicycle. The bbq is the best, you choose your location and someone from Pinetrees will deliver the esky with everything, and I mean everything down to paper and firelighters, to your spot and when you have finished you just cycle home and Pinetrees will collect the esky for you. Too easy. I haven't mentioned how absolutely beautiful every part of this Island is. The colour of the water takes your breath away. Beautiful palm groves, fish at Ned's beach and turtles at Old Settlement Beach swimming at your feet in the shallow water and snorkelling with beautiful coral and amazing variety of fish right off the beach at Ned's beach. I must admit though the 4 spot snorkel tour was my favourite and the cruise around the island was beautiful. Our fitness wasn't up to the Mt Gower climb but there are climbs and walks for all fitness levels. Just the most wonderful holiday on a beautiful, unspoiled Island.
Accommodation - we stayed in the 1 bedroom Villa which had a great location close to the beach. Units are not 5 star but spotlessly clean, very roomy with plenty of wardrobe space, loved the sliding door in the bathroom so you could see the pinetrees in privacy, great king size bed, hot shower very comfortable and spacious. Lord Howe is such an easy holiday, perhaps because the people at Pinetrees make it that way. Put it on the Bucket List, a must do.

Room Tip: One bedroom suite very roomy and comfortable and easy walk to the beach and dining area.

The first thing to note is this is an old fashioned family owned and run guest house not a resort.- charming, great staff who go out of the way to be helpful, fabulous food etc so don't go here expecting Bedarra. Once you are over that hurdle, WOW. Location, food, service are outstanding. Some in our group of 6 found no mobile phones and VERY limited internet access on the whole island frustrating to start but as they wound down, they recognised it was a real break and there was nothing to do but snorkel with turtles over beautiful coral, ride bikes on safe roads to gorgeous, beaches, take a hike into a Jurassic Park landscape or up a mountain, lounge around, watch the sunset into the ocean... in other words have a holiday.

We stayed in the three bedroom cabin with a full kitchen that we never used. Rooms were clean and well serviced. Our bathroom was a problem as there was a leaky shower screen but this was a minor inconvenience which was being corrected as we left. We were hardly in the room as there were many more relaxing, interesting places to be.

Go here for complete relaxation. Don't go here if you want nightclubs or city life. Don't let the price put you off - more than value for money when you take into account the airfare and all meals are included - all you need to spend is alcohol and decent coffee and bike hire and believe me you will want to hire a bike.

We have never been to Lord Howe before, and therefore had no idea what to expect from either the island or Pinetrees, so initially were a little surprised to find the accommodation so low-key and basic (for the cost). But our room was spotlessly clean, and had everything we needed, so we ended up feeling that not having any of the modern trappings was relaxing rather than a drawback. It's like going back to your childhood holidays at the family beach house, only with MUCH better food! The staff were all lovely and helpful, and by the time our week was up we were very sad to leave.

While we loved our Lord Howe Island holiday & Pinetrees in particular,I would advise caution with regard to the travel insurance recommended by Pinetrees. They were very difficult to deal with & denied our claim, even though we were out of pocket for a full day's accommodation ($510)The reason being did have a bed on the night in question which was provided by QANTASLINK ( who were outstanding in this situation) We fully understood the likelihood of the flight cancellation when we booked but did believe that we were covered by the insurance. We did however miss out on a full day on the island which would have included all meals,in exchange for lost time in an airport terminal,a night at Tempe & at 4.45am wake up call for the next days attempt.Eventually the company paid PART ONLY of the amount lost, after a lengthy & unpleasant process. We would have been better off uninsured by the time we paid the excess.
