After our honeymoon plans to Bora Bora were cancelled at very late notice we can honestly say it was probably a blessing in disguise!
As many have said on here the welcome from every single one of the staff was absolutely first class! Mark and Libby were great hosts and seem to have perfected the art of always being there to chat and offer advicve while never being to overburdening like so many other hosts tend to be.
We stayed in a lagoon loft and the views were absolutly fantastic, picture postcard stuff! We never wanted to leave the room with those views and could just sit and look out over the lagoon and the mountains for hours!!
We made full use of the free bikes and kayaks to expore the whole island which is well worth doing as the views from up in the mountains are exceptional. There is also an abundance of wildlife on the island which can been seen on almost every trip out of the lodge.
We were always tempted to try out the other restautrants on the Island but never did as the menu at Capella changed daily and the standard of the food was continually top class. This was the best place we have ever eaten!!
This is one place that we would always go back too. Top Class Lodge, top class food, top class hosts and a fantastic little island that we hope never changes!

Arrival: After a short 2 hour flight in a Dash 8 the warm welcome was like returning to old friends. A short trip in a Tarago type vehicle, with a couple of points of interest highlighted and we were ushered onto the side deck for a welcome drink and welcome snack. After a brief spell allowing us to collect our thoughts and having soaked up the view, we were ushered inside to sign the obligatory form and then led up to our double story unit (6). A brief introduction to our very comfortable, if some what nautical lodging, complete with 4 very welcoming lemon meringues and it was the perfect start to a lovely long weekend.

Accommodation: We were lucky enough to have scored an upgrade but I think the level of finish in the lower class units was probably just as good. All the lower and mid class units are actually housed in the one long building but very cleverly designed so the double story villas bedrooms alternate higher than the single units. So although we did hear some walking through the floorboards and talking from the people next door in our lounge area, it was not intrusive and a good nights sleep was assured in the bedroom. The unit as mentioned had a subtle nautical decor throughout. Not quite my taste but pleasant all the same. The units must have either been maintained by a clean freak or (and I guess) have been recently renovated as ours was spotless throughout. TV channels were a little limiting but they do offer a DVD library if you have to, bar fridge stocked with free soft drink and some alcohol and snacks that (for this level and price of accommodation) should have been included in the tariff. The water pressure was good, plenty of hot water but didn’t like only having a ceiling mounted shower rose and a shower curtain! The bed was fantastic, like sleeping in a cloud.

There are 18 steps along an uncovered board walk between the rooms and the lodge to negotiate, but there are umbrellas to help you dodge the frequent showers that can spring from nowhere.
The lodge consisted of a few (two with fireplaces) areas to mix and mingle if you wanted or to find a quiet corner if you so desired, along with the restaurant and bar. Fantastic view to greet you for breakfast each day and a rotational seating system each night, so you get to try a few tables out during your stay.

Food: The food really was fantastic. Breakfast consisted of continental and a menu choice of a hot selection. It was only on the last day that they tried giving our meals to another table (twice) before eventually finding their way to us. This plus forgetting my toast and then taking so long my egg had cooled to cold, were about the only complaints we could find. Dinner was very good. Again, a good choice off a menu of what were some very nice meals, despite the head chef being on the mainland, while we were there. Their choice of wine didn’t quite meet my palate the way I’d hoped one night, but no problems and two bottles later, we were all happy. Oh and happy hour at 6pm with canapés certainly had us winding down nicely for the evening.

Service: This is where Capella sets itself apart from other accommodation in this level/range. Initially being welcomed by name by staff I hadn’t even met was a little unnerving but very welcoming and done in a manner that appeared genuine to please. I really can’t fault the service in any way. The staff rotate through housekeeping, bar duties and serving in the restaurant and apart from my breakfast doing laps of the restaurant, it was faultless. Mark and Libby were the perfect hosts, where nothing was too much effort. They along with their staff made everyone feel welcome, right up to see us walk back to the plane to leave this beautiful little piece of paradise.

Other: It would be amiss of me not to mention what was one of the best massages I have ever had. To all the blokes out there, just remember the words “Mountain Man” and book yourself in – you have to, trust me. The other nice things with Capella (if you’re not staying in unit 1 which comes with it’s own golf buggy) are the free mountain bikes you get to use to ride around the island. Absolutely great. Oh and before you get on your bike, ask the staff for some bread for fish feeding and head down to Neds beach, you’ll wish you could through a line in.

Overall: The service really is what makes this place. There are places that include more in your tariff and some are better but this really is up there when it comes to the service provided. They should include alcohol during the day and the mini bar in the tariff and it really would be right up there in all regards but it does make up for it in the beautiful island to explore (because you’re not rocking your socks). Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

What an outstanding experience!

The staff at Capella Lodge are remarkable, they remember your name and know what you want before you ask. Your suite is beautifully appointed with lovely touches, from the beautiful linens to the fragrant essential oils filling your room each evening - the view from your balcony is breathtaking.

The food is fabulous - each evening from 6 to 8pm all the guests sit together sipping wine and sampling appetizers. As a solo traveler the opportunity to mingle with the other guests was fantastic. I was invited to dine with various guests each night.

Lord Howe Island is truly magical, it offers a host of activities - surfing, hiking, cycling, walking, and swimming. The beaches are stunning and the water crystal clear.

There is no question, I will return again and again.

What a find! Our week at Capella was one of the best holidays we have ever had.

The lodge itself is beautifully appointed, having undergone a major renovation recently. The main dining area has fantastic views of the twin volcanic peaks of Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird. I think this is the only lodge on the island to have these views.

The rooms are impecably designed with every detail thought of. From the twin decks for relaxing with a good book to the box built into the outdoor seat for storing your beach shoes/wet stuff.

The staff are wonderfully friendly and attentive, making you feel very comfortable immediately. The fact that they all remember your name completes the experience.

The spa is great and has uniquely Australian Li' Tya treatments. I went for the Kodo Relaxation Massage while my wife went more traditional with a Therapeutic Massage. Very very good at the end of a day's walk.

Best of all is the food ....ahhhhh the food. Like eating at "Bills" (a Sydney eatery famous for its unbelievable breakfasts) every morning and "Tetsuya's" (another great Sydney eatery) every night. And it's all included in the price, as is the wine - which is a selection of some of the best Australia has to offer.

Leaving after a week at Capella was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. We will be back!!!

This property is amazing in every way! Of the thousands of properties we have stayed at over many, many years we cannot recall one as good as this.
Firstly, we were greeted at the airport by the managers who are exceptionally friendly and helpful. We weren't allowed to help at all, they did everything.
Once we arrived at the resort, a welcome drink and 5 star snack awaited (complimentary of course). The managers made us feel at home and were anxious to please in every way, by asking us how we like our food cooked... do we have any special preferences etc.
Absolutely nothing was too much trouble.
The food was outstanding! A gourmet treat at every meal, it was like a gastronomical adventure of the best kind.
My wife is quite fussy about the way she likes her food, and this was never a problem... absolutely nothing was too much trouble.
The room was very nice... spacious, clean a huge verandah and the bed was a delight to sleep in. It was very romantic too, looking straight out to the sea and the two towering mountains nearby.
The spa was as good as you'd find anywhere too.
We hired a golf buggy for the day we took our photo gear with us, otherwise the free bikes were in perfect condition and ideal to ride all over the island.
There was free internet medium speed broadband and I used my laptop.
The resort is well located, and is very nice with a nice social gathering every afternoon.
Every one of the staff (there was more staff than guests) treated us like royalty.
We could not think of one thing to complain about, and we were hard pressed to think of anything that could be improved upon.
We're going back again asap because this was probably the best couple's getaway in the world that we've found!

I probably can't say enough wonderful things about the Capella Lodge or Lord Howe island. My husband and I spent 5 nights there for our honeymoon, and didn't want to leave. From the greeting at the airport to farewell 5 days later, everything was perfect. The lodge is small, but charming and has incredible views. The food was better than we could have ever hoped for. I think the chefs, Matt and Phil, should be on Iron Chef! Libby and Mark made everyone feel at home, and it was such a shame to leave. The island is definitely not for everyone-you have to be willing to walk or ride a bike to a beach, but once you get there, you can't imagine anywhere more perfect. During the day, you can hike, bike, swim, fish, golf, dive, or just do nothing on the beach. At night, it's a quiet dinner and stargazing. Then you get to do it all again! They said not to spread the word, but it's too good to not share it!

We have just returned from a week at Capella Lodge. This was our second visit. It is a wonderful place to stay for both relaxation and people wanting to pursue outdoor activities. The whole resort is tastefully furnished and very comfortable. The managers are wonderful and happy to make sure your stay is a total success. The food is well presented and has a strong Asian bent. Quality and quantity could generally not be faulted. My only criticism is that a resort of this standard should strongly discourage children. I think it is geared to couples wanting to relax and be pampered and the presence of children does not perpetuate this. However, this said, it is a wonderful place and one of the best I have stayed in.
