“Will Return”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2013

We stayed for one week in Feb 2013. From the pickup at the airport to the drop off for return home we could not have had a better holiday. Although the weather was not very good for the first 2 days and some luggage did not arrive for a few days, the owners could not be more helpful. Nothing was a problem and always had smiling faces. Lovely clean rooms, quite gardens and only a short walk to restaurants. If you are not able to walk they have a bus service to Restaurants. Bike hire is great, with good standard bikes and helmets. Messages were delivered to your door as soon as they were received. Would definately return to Lord Howe and would stay here again.

We stayed at Leanda-Lei for five nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Leanda-Lei is clean, comfortable, quiet and well kept. The setting is picturesque, with lots of palms in the surrounding area and well-maintained gardens. The kitchen in our apartment was well equipped for a holiday apartment and everything worked. There is a good common lounge area with bathroom facilities, which is very useful on the day you check out if you are leaving in the afternoon, but it is also just a nice place to sit at other times. The hosts are helpful, although the office is unattended for substantial parts of the day. The pick-up and drop-off service to the airport is good and free transport to restaurants is available in the evening.

The location is good. It is on the edge of the settlement, only a couple of hundred metres from the lagoon. A well-stocked general store directly across the road is very convenient and can provide most things you are likely to need during your stay (don't expect anything resembling a smile or helpfulness from the staff in the shop however).

It is a little expensive compared to a similar apartment in a capital city, but so is everything else on Lord Howe. This little paradise is a long way from anywhere else, with all the logistical challenges that isolation creates for small communities. Don't go to Lord Howe if you want a cheap holiday, however it is well worth what you pay because it is a truly delightful, uncrowded and unique place.

We stayed in one of the apartments in the same block as the office and discovered that they do not have as nice an outlook as some of the other apartments (not a huge issue though). The only real irritation during the visit was that their wireless internet access was not working, which was important to me for family reasons. Fortunately the museum about 200 metres down the road offers public internet access which is available 24 hours a day (if you have torch in the evening) and it costs about one third of the Leanda-Lei price for access. I recommend a visit to the museum even if you don't need the internet. It is modern and interesting and hosts some good talks about local wildlife etc. It also has a nice little cafe.

Room Tip: Rooms on the downhill end have a nicer outlook

Since there are virtually no cars on the island, the hosts pick you up at the airport and get you situated.
Check your room quickly and let them know if you need anything because they are only at the reception a few hours in the morning, and about 30 to 60mn before the 6:30 bus ride to the restaurants they offer (although if you don't mind a walk with a flashlight for the way back, you totally can walk to pretty much all restaurants).
The hosts were very helpful and did their best to take care of all our needs.
As others have said, the Island gets satellite internet. Don't expect it to be fast, be happy that you can send an Email or two, and then go do something else :) (during our stay, there were some problems with the wireless router, but hopefully it's getting replaced as I'm writing this).
If you have to use a phone, there is a public phone pretty close, and a pretty well stocked store is 1mn walk across the street (be ready for high prices though, like everywhere on the island, and understand that fresh green vegetables are a treat, not something to expect, due to the boat supply that comes every 2 weeks).
They also provide bikes (not all hotels do), and they come very handy for getting around.
Have fun on LHI, and if you go diving, check out Howea Divers.
Like most such locations, there is no AC, so you may have to sleep with the windows open even if it wasn't that warm for us in february. It was not noisy, but bring ear plugs just in case.

Room Tip: If it is very important to you, there are a few one bedrooms (maybe 6) that can get wireless without...

Leanda Lei is very centrally located, just up the road from the musuem and within easy walking distance of the lagoon and most of the main sites. Our group spent a week here in February and had studio apartments in a garden setting. Try to avoid the first apartments (in the same block as the office) if you can as they would probably be noisy as they are close to the road and right on the driveway, with everyone coming and going at all hours, not to mention that you could see right in as you walked past. Our apartments were set in a lush garden area, with a small verandah at the front and a covered deck at the back (which somehow doesn't stay dry at all when it rains so don't leave your towels etc out if there might be rain.) The rooms are quite new and very comfortable, though probably would be described as motel-style so if a higher standard of fittings or special romantic getaway is on your agenda perhaps you would be better going elsewhere. The kitchenette was more than adequate. The shower seemed to spread water everywhere which seemed odd as management seem very conscious of conserving water as they hadn't had much rain when we were there. Linen is changed on request - you put it in a basket outside your room by 9.30. Everything was very clean. There was a ceiling fan which was more than adequate on warm nights. Peter and Judy, the owners, are lovely people and provide airport transfers as well as lifts to restaurants in the evening. It's a real family concern as their daughter did a lot of the shuttles and we did a round the island boat trip on the Lulawai with them as well as a glass-bottomed boat turtle-spotting and snorkelling trip to North Bay with their son. We usually walked back after dinner (take a torch!) but most of the restaurants have a shuttle service to bring you back if you don't want to walk or if it's raining. It's true that they aren't there all the time, as mentioned in other reviews, but the office is open in the morning and you can leave messages for them on the whiteboard at the office. There is a barbecue area (probably more than one but I saw just the one outside our rooms) and a laundry as well as a communal washing line which dries things really quickly when it's fine. The laundry has a drier if it's not. Beach towels and a backpack are provided in each room. You can also rent bikes for a reasonable price which are essential for getting around to most places on the island. As noted in other reviews some of the bikes are a bit creaky but overall they seemed adequate to get around on. Make sure you always wear your bike helmet as we were told that the local police are really particular about that. The rooms have TV but no phones but there is a phone box across the road (outside Joy's Shop) if you really need to connect to civilisation. Wi-fi is available for a fee to use in the 'transit lounge', a large area with shower and toilet and where you can leave your luggage after checking out. If you want to have 24-hr reception, phones in your room and daily linen changes, perhaps Lord Howe is not the destination for you. Otherwise it is the perfect place to relax and unwind. I'd definitely stay at Leanda Lei again and have recommended it to my friends. Tip: being an island everything is expensive so if you can fit tea/coffee/snacks or whatever else you need in your restricted luggage allowance, take it. And don't forget your torch! A small bright one is sufficient.

Room Tip: Steer clear of the front rooms along the driveway, where the office is.

We planned to stay for five days in July, and extended an extra day when flights were cancelled.

Leanda-Lei is centrally located, in the middle of the island, with Joy's store opposite, and the main shopping/restaurant strip 15 or 20 minutes' walk in one direction and the bowling club and Pinetrees slightly less in the other. The museum and the Kentia palm nursery are practically on your doorstep.

We were the only guests. Our apartment (19, I think) faced a large expanse of lawn fringed with garden beds and tropical trees with views of Mount Gower in the distance. Woodhens and other native birds flitted in and out of garden beds and across the lawn.

The apartment was comfortable and homely with a reasonably well-equipped kitchen (I was glad I took my own stovetop coffeemaker) and a good bathroom. Beach towels were provided, not that we had any use for them mid-winter.

Our hosts were friendly, unobtrusive, and very helpful when we had to stay the extra night. All in all, it was a very peaceful, relaxing place to stay and I couldn't recommend it more highly - even, perhaps especially, in winter.

A great place to relax, quite and comfortable. The property is very centrally located and even for people not used to bike riding easy accessible. The staff was friendly and there when needed but never intrusive. We fully recommend.

Room Tip: Some rooms open to courtyard, most open to gardens.

We couldn't have picked a better place to stay. My husband and I went to LHI on a package deal from Oxley Travel. What fantastic value it was. When we arrived, Peter was there at the airport to pick us up. When we arrived at Leanda Lei we were shown to our peaceful studio room (Room 2). Being a studio room we thought it would be small but we were very mistaken - it was large - even had a king sized bed! Our room was very clean and had a small kitchen - great if you wanted to prepare your own meals. Just off our room was a private small covered (shady) verandah area to sit in. The gardens at LL are beautiful - very tropical, with gorgeous palms, flowers etc. We then met Judy, Peter's wife. During the week we mostly had contact with Judy and what a fantastic host she was, met us each day with a beautiful smile. Nothing was too much trouble and she was so helpful when we needed anything. As part of our package, we had a tour each day. We never wondered when we were leaving etc as LL had placed a timetable in our room and the whiteboard outside the office also advised of us what we would be doing each day and times. For each activity and dinner Judy drove us to our destination, if we weren't being picked up by guides. Judy and Peter's son Anthony visited us at breakfast every morning to confirm times etc. Due to the choppy seas (result of the cyclone off Queensland), some of our outings had to be rearranged but we got to do everything we paid for, thanks to Anthony. Like his mum, Anthony was wonderful. LL has some great facilities including outdoor barbecues; well-equipped laundry (washer and dryer); and a very large transit lounge in case you have a late flight after check-out, complete with shower/toilet/tea making facilities etc. LL is located in the best area of LHI - close to the Coral Cafe for breakfast and lunch; a short walk to Lagoon Beach for safe swimming; and within walking distance to the main part of town. LL also hire bikes which are essential if you want to see the island. On our last day we rode our bikes and visited many places on the island. When we visited Settlement Beach we were so lucky - we got to swim with turtles - what an experience. For our first visit to LHI we picked one of the best places to stay. Judy, Anthony, Peter and Amy - a huge thank you - you helped make our holiday very memorable and we will be back.
