We had very few options left to book when we decided to do a last minute road trip so we booked Poplars motel.

The place itself is pretty good. Clean rooms, great shower, good air-con and parking etc, so all those are plus points.

The only negative aspect you should be aware of is the guy at the front desk, the manager I assume... Possibly the worst attitude I have ever had to deal with at any accommodation across the world ever. If you can get in and out without dealing with him then by all means have a great stay. We however didn't make it past him without being on the receiving end of his negativity and poor behaviour. I probably wouldn't stay there again based on this, but as I said, the place itself was good.

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms - they were both the same so I assume they all are. All ground floor level. Pretty cl...

I recently stayed at this motel while on a business trip to the Southern Highlands. I had not made a booking but there were rooms available. The prices are very reasonable for this area. On arrival, the owners were friendly and check in was prompt and efficient. I found the room to be quite large and tastefully decorated, with modern furnishings. The room was exceptionally clean with the bathroom well appointed. The bed was very comfortable which is important after a long day on the road. For the commercial traveller, there was ample work space and importantly power points for computer connection. Although on the main road, the building is set well back with road noise barely noticeable.

Room Tip: All rooms are on ground level with parking at the door.

I rang this Motel to book a room three weeks in advance of a road trip between Brisbane and Melbourne. In the phone conversation I requested the Motel's disabled room because my wife has balance problems, particularly in the shower.
When I arrived, the booking was confirmed and we went to the room we were provided with. On entry, I saw it was not the disabled room, so walked back to reception to advise it was the wrong room. The manager became quite angry and abusive saying I should tell him these things because he couldn't read minds and that he would now have to clean up the mess we had made of the room he had sent me to (we had been away from reception for about two minutes). He then tried to charge me more for the disabled room, even though the price for the room had been confirmed in my phone booking.
After this, I can confirm that the bed and pillows are quite hard, but the gardens are beautiful.
Overall a most upsetting arrival. We did not stay in this motel on the return trip.

Room Tip: There is only one floor and the motel is well away from the road so there is little difference betwe...

Poplars is part of the Golden Chain group but is a cut above the GC usual offering. My wife and I were in Mittagong to attend a funeral and stayed overnight. The receptionist was super-friendly and accommodating and supplied a bottle of fresh milk -- a rarity these days. The room was small but beautifully thought out and equipped. The outlook was to a rose garden. Everything in the room had obviously been carefully planned to maximise floor space, even to the fact that the phone book and travel brochures were in a rack attached to the wall. The coffee sachets were Nescafe and there were biscuits. Often we have been in motels where the electric jug is too big to fit easily under the tap to fill, but this one had a compact jug which was fine. The bathroom was, again, small, but equipped with quality china basin and toilet and had heat lamps. The only drawback was the fact that, as in nearly all modern motel rooms, refurbishment means reduced-flow showers, and this was no exception. We would stay there again.

We stayed for 2 nights to attend a wedding in Bowral. This property is in Braemar rather than Mittagong but it's only a 2 min drive back into the heart of Mittagong if you need groceries/shops etc.. Our 2 bedroom self contained unit was very clean. It has a kitchenette including fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, plates, cups was fantastic for preparing snacks/breakfast etc but no sink so had to wash up in the bathroom basin which was tricky. Not sure if you could call it a "bathroom" it's more like a shower & basin that you step into VERY TINY! The toilet is of normal size and separate to the bathroom area. We requested a porta cot for our baby when we booked which was bought to our room on arrival and we set it up ourselves, the owners included fresh baby sheets and blankets for the cot which was fantastic. Lovely view of the garden out the french doors, also great country fresh air. The queen sized bed was remarkably comfortable with lots of extra pillows and blankets in the cupboards. A flat screen tv in each of the bedrooms was a bonus! Longer curtains are required for the window over the queen bed as the porch light comes blarring in under the curtains right at eye level. The heating was excellent! Our unit was serviced daily and the cleaner did a fantastic job. Fresh towels and mopped the floors which I loved due to having a crawling baby and a toddler. We asked the owner to watch over our room the night we left the children with the nanny to go to the wedding and he was absolutely fantastic saying he definitely would. Love that this place is out of town, it does feel secluded, quiet and safe. Overall we had a comfortable stay and would stay here again. We really appreciated the little extras at this motel that you don't see at other places such as: the minty lollies in the room, the chocolates in reception, being able to do a load of washing in the guest laundry, the magazines in the unit & the fresh milk for coffee!

Stayed here overnight on our way to Melbourne. The owners were lovely towards us and more than helpful with getting around town.

The rooms were a great size and very clean. The added benefit of having a sink in the kitchenette was fantastic, if you needed a drink you don't have to fill up the kettle or your cup in the bathroom.

Yes the bathrooms were a little dated but in no way did that reflect on the cleanliness.
