Murwillumbah YHA - Riverside Backpackers

Super hostel where every day is a super day. Just ask Tassie, your hostel host. You could easily spend a week here, no worries. Don't only go to climb Mt.Warning (though it is an amazing hike) as there are so many National Parks within an hour or two of the hostel. Now with the Margaret Ollie Art Centre added to the Tweed Valley Regional Art Gallery, there's another must do visit. Just a few hundred meters away you can walk along the river levee bank and marvel at the graffiti wall. So much to do and see knowing at day's end you can return to your friendly hostel and chill out before another great day in paradise.

My friend and I stayed here over a weekend and we fell in love. The price was great being $70 for the two of us overnight in a doubles room that opens onto the verandah overlooking the river and Mt Warning.
Tassie the man who owns and runs the YHA is just awesome :-) he not only gives out free ice cream and coffee every night but he is always there to help you with anything you need. He put us onto a great car hire man in the area Phil who ended up driving us to Mt Warning snd giving us a great tour. We felt at home instantly and would not hesitate to stay here again..or live there for that matter!! Tassie is the best and so entertaining and it is not at all crowded as one might suspect. Very peacefull and relaxing.

A great place if you like it quiet and relaxing. Fantastic location, so much info available to travellers from the fantastic Tassie, and Murwillumbah has much to see - the Art Gallery, Mount Warning, nearby Natural Arch. A great alternative to the usual young backpacker crowd.

My wife and I stay here as often as we can. The hostel is in the perfect location with a fabulous view to Mt Warning & the river (for swimming) is just outside. It's good to have a car, to get to the unmissable hike up the mountain, & to the beaches, about 20 minutes scenic drive away.
Tassie, the owner, is full of information & always ready to advise. Get one of the hostel bikes to go on a long (flat ride) through the canefields with the stunning mountain backdrop.
It's great value if you don't mind shared facilities, and there is a communal kitchen which you can use to bring down your cost of living. A large water dragon turns up on the deck every morning & like to be fed bits of fruit, especially banana. Don't let him take it from your fingers though, as he can give a nasty nip.

The YHA at Murwillumbah is like no other I have come across.
It is right on the riverside of the beautiful, tranquil Tweed, with increadible views across to Mount Warning. The hostel itself is a wooden building and our twin room opened out onto the decking at the back. The location and the hostel itself are a surprise enough, but what really makes this place is the legend that is Tassie, the owner.

From the moment you are showed around, you are made to feel like part of his extended family - we arrived on a Wednesday and were duly taken out that evening to the "Jazz, Shanks and Shiraz" evening at Tweed Heads - fantastic food, wine and music all for $15! Tassie shows a real interest in all of his guests and is an absolute gold mine of useful information about the local area (including the climb up Mount Warning - an absolute must - a killer on the legs, but so so worth it!). His care and commitment are summed up by the nightly 9pm ice cream which he provides with all of his guests sitting round the dining table talking about their day - it's absolutely brilliant!

I wish I could have stayed for longer...

If you are in any doubt about where to get off the bus after Byron Bay, head straight for Murwillumbah and Tassie's place - you will not regret it!!

I really liked this hostel, partly because it was clean and comfy, but mainly because the owner was really friendly. Plus Murwillumbah is an interesting town because not many backpackers go there.
