The Oasis at One Mile Beach
Reviewed 28 January 2014

We've just returned from a 3 night week end getaway @ O'Carrollyns and would highly recommend this retreat. I'm sure O'Carrollyn's is not for all - if you are looking for a fancy hotel with all the facilities and a homogenised look and feel then stay at the Mantra or something of that ilk. If you want to stay in a beautiful, tranquil natural bushland environment you cannot beat this. There are a small number of Bungalows well spaced apart on this large tract of land with communal areas if you want to BBQ etc. The Bungalows are basic though spacious and comfortable. One Mile beach is a short walk across the way and it is a short drive to Stockton Sand Dunes, shopping centre close by. We were also very fortunate to have a wonderful Koala spotting as it was crossing a quiet road nearby. The other bonus and why we chose this place in the first place was it is dog friendly - it was great being able to bring the pooches with us and they had the best time.

Thank you to all the staff at O'Carrollyns - just returned from a family get together - 19 of us plus a couple of dogs. A wonderful facility for family get togethers - the central camp kitchen/conference/eating area is excellent with all facilities - the covered fire pit was a great hit. The bungalows are large, clean and spacious - can accommodate large families. Being able to bring our spoilt dogs was one of the 1st attractions - the gardens and grounds a lovely, meeting the resident koala was a highlight. We will be back.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We were happy to see your family group made the most of the fire pit - we certainly have lots of firewood to spare at the moment! Look forward to seeing you again next year.
Thanks again,

My son and I and our two house dogs have just spent the most wonderful relaxing two nights and thoroughly recommend the wonderful hospitality and superb surroundings of O'Carrollyn's Eco Retreat. Our hosts made our stay even better - lovely people and they work hard to make sure their guests are happy. We loved our home away from home and also adored the jaccuzzi - I feel like I have been away for a week or more. Our dogs loved the privilege of being at O'Carrollyns. They enjoyed the beautiful grounds too and obeyed the rules - very important that your dog is well trained as there is plenty of wild life around. We can not wait to book another break away in this heavenly part of the world but will make sure we stay longer next time!

Thank you for your review Cyndy, we loved having you to stay. As our first 'pet friendly' guests, your two doggies were an absolute dream! The photo of your son and his two dogs walking across the bridge has become a standard marketing photo for us now - I think it captures O'Carrollyn's beautifully.
Thanks again,

My husband and I were lucky enough to spend 3 nights at O'Carrollyns. Our cabin was huge, a bedroom, bathroom, living room , well equipped kitchen downstairs and a loft with double bed upstairs. We had no problem with mosquitoes or any other insects. The grounds are really beautiful and you feel like you are vacationing in a bit of rain forest. Mark and Cherrie are very hospitable, and they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. In fact the only koala that we saw in 3 weeks vacation in Australia was pointed out to us one morning by Cherrie. Nelson Bay is just a few kilometeres down the road, lots of touristic activities, shops, beaches there. Our only experience with One Mile Beach found it to be unpleasantly windy, but the beaches in Nelson Bay were fantastic. Noise from other cabins was never a problem, despite the fact that it was their busy season and they were completely booked. O'Carrollyns is a very special place, we enjoyed it very much.

We spent 3 nights with the family including 2 young kids aged 4 and 16 month old between Xmas and NYE. Cherrie and Mark were lovely and they work really hard to make their customers happy.

We initially stayed for 2 nights but decided to stay for an extra night and were lucky enough as the next people were only coming the day after so we got to stay for NYE as well. It felt like a week holiday. We all had a great time!

The family bungalow was very clean and spacious - there was a double room downstairs which was large enough for an additional portacot, and a huge mezzanine upstairs with a double bed and 3 beds. It was very quiet and relaxing. My sons loved the ducks in the central pound. We had lunch one at the common area that is kept very clean, and there 3 bbqs and a micro-wave, cutlery, everything you need etc...

We love One mile beach as it is still secluded, quiet and surrounded by the national park despite the heavy development in the nelson bay area that is only a 10-min drive away.

Don;t forget to bring and use your repellent as there are mosquitos...

Overall, we loved the place and will come back!

We stayed in a family bungalow which could have accommodated about 7 people. The accommodation was fairly clean and tidy when we arrived. They had been busy with a weekend wedding just prior to our arrival on Sunday afternoon.
The bathroom was badly designed for disabled people but we managed with the owner supplying a shower chair and a squeegee to mop the wet floor. There was water everywhere across the bathroon floor after every shower. It was a bit slippery. The owner did her best to help by supplying extra old towels to help mop it up.
I was able to have a "dip" in the tiny little pool with the help of the owner...they have a fixed winch beside the pool to get disabled people in and out in a type of "sling"....the water was really cold but it was OK for a 15 min swim up and down (the pool was about 4m long).
We enjoyed the bush surrounds and when there were other people in the bungalows on both sides of us, it threatened to get noisy but I was surprised how peaceful it remained. We went out for some meals and only used the microwave once (the turntable didn't work but the food heated!) with salads for other meals.
We stayed in most nights and watched TV. The beds were comfortable. It was more than the 500m they stated to the beach when we walked it...better to drive around there.

Room Tip: Choose a bungalow to suit your own needs, all bungalows are on a loop road and face the central pond...

We chose O'Carrollyns for our weekend away on the basis that they had couples-only cabins that were set away from the other cabins on site and this was during school holidays - so hopefully it would be a bit quieter than at other accommodation choices.

On that basis we weren't disappointed. Our cabin was one of two located a small distance away from the other cabins and, overall, the site was very quiet and perfect for a getaway.

There were a number of small issues, though, that meant the overall experience wasn't what we had hoped for. The grounds looked a bit unkempt - the lawn was recently mown but the gardens and growth in the ponds generally looked overgrown and uncared for. The barbecues and communal barbecue area as a whole looked grimy, worn and tired. In the cabin itself we had the main light in the bedroom stop working for no apparent reason and then just as randomly start working again after a few hours. And if you pulled the bedroom curtain closed a fraction too hard the curtain rail would fall down as it hadn't been secured properly to the brackets. On our second night the TV wouldn't work - it was receiving no signal, after having no issues the night before. The spa pool was fantastic - nice and private, however the temperature control didn't seem to be working and so if you found it too hot you couldn't adjust it at all.

On the up side, we had taken plenty of tropical strength insect repellant on the basis of previous reviews but didn't need to use it. There were no issues with mosquitoes or other biting insects. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept really well both nights. The location of O'Carrollyns is also fantastic. Only a 5 minute walk to One Mile Beach and a 5 minute drive to Nelson Bay. So handy to everything and yet also easy to get away from it all.

Overall, then, the issues we experienced were minor individually but, overall led to an underwhelming experience for which we paid an above average rate. We'll be trying somewhere different on our next trip to Port Stephens.
