Rydges Thredbo Alpine Hotel
Ranked #3 of 5 Hotels in Thredbo Village
Reviewed 20 July 2014

We have stayed at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel a number of times over the past 20 years, including 2 overnight stays this season when the snow was good, and we decided to stay and ski another day. The ski storage and boot drying room open to the path to the village lifts, only a few minutes walk away. Most restaurants in the village are only a few minutes walk away, as is the supermarket. There are 2 restaurants in the hotel, as well as a lounge bar, and I have always enjoyed eating and drinking at these outlets. Breakfast buffet is similar to most breakfast buffets at Rydges hotels - good quality, plenty of choice.

All the rooms we have stayed in look over the pool terrace towards the mountain. Apres ski activities take place on the pool terrace each winter afternoon, so it can be noisy for a few hours, but all is quiet before sleep time (maybe not so good for people with young children or anyone needing to sleep in the late afternoon/early evening). The rooms we have stayed in are compact, but have everything you need for a short stay (there are larger rooms that may be more comfortable for a longer stay).

There is some parking available at the hotel, but it can get a bit chaotic when the hotel is full. Also BEWARE of black ice in the car park on cold mornings.

Can't get any more convenient for skiers. Walk out hotel and across the road to ski lifts. Complementary ski stowage and use of drying room is a bonus. Close to restaurants and shops in thredbo village. Our rooms on the 1st floor were adequate but were noisy from 4-6pm from loud music at the ski apres. Our stay was marred by an experience at dinner in the Cascades. Food was good but the wait of 1 hour for the entree, followed by another hour for the mains was terrible. Several diners at other tables walked out. Stay at the hotel for the skiing but eat elsewhere.

We had lunch in bistro this week, and waited over an hour for quick meals. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! We chose what we thought would be quick, but not so. It took several complaints to get our order. Other clients were also complaining. One man only ordered plates of chips and waited and waited and complained several times. The kids were itching to get back on snow, and having paid access to snow etc, we were not at all happy. When they did arrive the meals were fine and basic. Next time we are off to the bakery for pies etc. We love the village, and the Hotel, but The Bistro is not up to satisfactory standard.

Room Tip: Hotel accommodation is great, a little expensive, forget the Bistro.

From the moment that we arrived till the moment that we left - we were pleasantly surprised at every stage of our weekend away. Justin on reception was exceptional - nothing was too much hassle (as was Lynette who assisted with the booking). Room with a balcony and mountain view is def worthwhile. Breakfast was excellent - hot and cold and little shots of juice, smoothies and Bircher muesli. I would def recommend - 5 star service at a not so 5 star price! Thank you alpine hotel for making us feel special!

Thredbo Alpine Hotel is in a great location for all Thredbo eateries and right across from the Kosci Express chairlift and ticketing centre, which we thought was brilliant. We have found ourselves in some out-of-the-way locations, so to be amongst it was a fantastic start to our Thredbo break. But it all took a decidedly downward turn when we walked into our room and it was completely unsuitable. It was a twin room and very, very small and very, very tired. Its important that I say from the outset that this was completely my misunderstanding and no fault of the Hotel. However, reception staff member Bryce was fantastic - very understanding - and fixed us up straight away. Our room was changed with minimal fuss and small additional cost. Our adjoining rooms were comfortable and quiet, and although both were quite small, it was all we needed. Breakfast in Cascades was fantastic - huge range of breakfast items, and due to low Hotel occupancy, breakfast was cooked to order rather than buffet. We stayed at This Hotel right of the cusp of the Summer end of season/Winter start of season, which I feel has impacted on our visit significantly. This Hotel will be completely packed in Winter, and the flexibility and options afforded to us during our visit for changing our room, breakfast, easy parking availability and quiet atmosphere would not be available/possible/reasonable in peak season. However, even when fully booked, I have no doubt that the staff would help out wherever possible. Overall, a good experience thanks to Bryce's understanding.

Really friendly staff in great location. The hotel is getting a little 'old' but is still comfortable with good facilities. The breakfast was awesome. Close to all Thredbo facilities, including bars & restaurants and only a short walk to Kosi express chairlift.

We spent two nights here and had a lovely time. As other reviews have said, the walls were quite thin, but the bed was comfortable so we slept fine. The staff were very friendly and happy to help out. The hotel is very well located in Thredbo–it made a great base for day walks. The breakfast was awesome: massive buffet spread, eggs done three ways, full sized hash browns, freshly made juices and smoothies and all with a grand view. We also used the heated outdoor spa which made for a relaxing end to the day.
