White Cliffs Underground Motel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in White Cliffs
Reviewed 24 January 2013

The Underground Motel is a fantastic experience, naturally cool (23 degrees all day and all year), quiet and a relaxing venue. A bit off the beaten track but an interesting drive and a few things to do around the town. Sunset is worth venturing up the stairs for and the amenities are comfortable and owners and staff very friendly.

Room Tip: Take your bearings as it can be abit like a rabbit warren if you get lost.

I actually came all the way to White cliffs just to stay underground! It was nice and cool inside and I particularly love to watch the stars at night (you walk up the stairs to the top of the motel), it was great. I had a good look at the other rooms as well, as none of them are locked! I think they should promote this place better. Dinner was great too.

Make sure you let them know well in advance whether you need dinner, as the is probably the only place in white cliffs that you can get food at night!

What a unique place - wander through the knobbly white warren of cool corridors and rooms lit dimly by circular air shafts. Getting lost in there is all part of the adventure. Listen to the silence of being deep underground. Emerge into the desert heat and it all makes such sense! A warm welcome from Richard and Jenny, good company always. They have an inspiring art collection on display, rooms are well kept and the meals delicious. White Cliffs is a still-functioning opal town with a poignant history of bitter struggle mingled with sweet successes. Try an opal mine tour with local miners who are passionate about their quest. Lake Peery in the nearby Paroo/Darling National Park was an exquisite place to visit. The local landscape contains stunning vistas of vast scrub and eroded red earth gullies, so inspiring. It was so nice to return to the motel in the evenings for a swim and a cold beer and then to watch (or paint) the superb sunsets from the rooftop lookout. A truly unique and memorable place.

Great place and unique. Not unlike Ice hotel in Sweden (only other way around) but not as plush or as expensive. Pool was nice and cold but could have done with a cleaning (or skim with pool cleaning net anyway). Advert on leaflet/WC booklet saying watch sunset from the pool not exactly reality. Set dinner at 7pm (understandably) so you miss sunset (in spring anyway), food passable but fine considering locale. Like everywhere in Oz food & drink costs add up. Staff very nice. Well worth 100km detour to Broken Hill. Would recommend.

We arrived at White Cliifs very late in the day on an extremely hot afternoon. It was a pleasure to check in to find our rooms very cool, comfortable and quiet. The staff were extremely helpful and obliging. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were also very good. A lovely experience to stay underground in the cool.

Room Tip: Choose a room near to the bathroom amenities as they are above ground at the front of the Motel

The Motel was clean and quiet and the staff very helpful, staying underground was a cool experience and my 12 year old son loved it. Don't expect too much it is a bit basic for the price and the meals are quite expensive for what you get but the overheads are probably high as the place is so remote. We would definatley revisit, there's not that much to do in White Cliffs and found one night was plenty, if you plan to go fossiking I would'nt advise taking kid to the fossiking area as there are hundreds of open shafts. We had a puncture there and although a local was helpful and tried to fix it he was unable and advised us to go to Wilcannia 100k's away. We nervousley drove there and found the mechanic who told us he was too busy and that we should get it fixed in Broken Hill, after another nervous 200k's we arrived at Broken Hill and Beau Repairs had it repaied in 10 minutes, this was the only down side to a fantastic trip

Great staff
Great location
Clean, tidy and very unique.
Would definately recommend.
the drive out eas great and sceninic, just watch for sheep and cattle, there are no fences there to keep them in.
The town its self has no real food outlets except for a small take away or you can eat a reasonable meal at the motel
The rooms are tidy but there are no tv's fridges etc allowed in the rooms but there are sitting areas scattered around for you to relax
all in all a great and memorable experience

Room Tip: deeper in the better
