Great welcome from hosts. Map of how to master the tunnels to get to dug-out number 12. Huge room with rock walls. Nice bed. Constant 22 degrees. Bathroom a bit of a walk down meandering tunnels, but clean and functional. Pre dinner drinks, a great roast dinner. Only one TV, with just three channels (no cricket). Midnight walk up 50 steps to see the Milky Way in its full brilliance. Great bacon & egg breakfast. Vegie option available for the wife.

We stayed here one night on our way from Broken Hill to Lightning Ridge. We had stayed underground before at Coober Pedy so it was not something new for us.
There is only one room with an ensuite. room 33 so if you want private facilities request this room in advance. All other rooms the bathroom is down the hall. The rooms are certainly quiet, and dark when the lights are out. Dinner is basic and $ 35 a head. But the only other place to eat in town is the Pub. Breakfast was $32 for two people - one continental and one cooked breakfast. Over priced for what was available. Rooms are $125 for the ensuite, and $99 for the other rooms. It is an expierence but one night is enough. Coober Pedy has more to offer than White Cliffs. make sure you come out after dinner to look at the stars in the sky, fantasic - so clear. And Sunrise was great too.

Very cool place to stay: neat to be underground. Rooms are smallish, but nicely furnished. Entirely comfortable place to stay!

  • Liked — great location and facilities
  • Disliked — price for dinner at the hotel

My wife and I plus our two children arrived at the underground motel in the middle of a huge electrical storm.
White Cliffs is 100kms from Wilcannia on a good sealed road. White Cliffs itself does not have sealed roads but they are fine for ordinary 2 wheeled drive cars.
As it was the middle of summer, there were very few tourists around, in fact we were the only ones staying at the underground motel.
The maze of cool corridors in the dug out just has to be seen to be believed. Our children (5 and 10) loved it as they could explore around and through the tricky geography of the place.
The shared toilet and shower facilities were spotless and there seemed to be about 6 showers for the 30 rooms (maybe that's not so good if the motel is full).
I have stayed, many years ago, at the underground motel in Coober Peedy and found it very stuffy. White Cliffs was anything but. The corridors and rooms have an airiness about them which prompted my children to suggest that there had to be air con running to maintain the slight breeze, bur not so - apparently it's all in the design!
The evening meal was enormous but only OK - nothing special althogh Doug (an opal miner) and his German born wife Barbara go there every week for the cuisine.
Our children loved the open air pool and we all were amazed at the views from up on top of the dug out.
