If you're after a quiet, relaxing time away then this is the place. No phone service means no disruptions, and the grounds are just beautiful. With the town of Wollombi just a few minutes drive away, with beautiful places to eat its makes it the perfect place to slow down and catch up with yourself. The outside spa is also a major bonus! Will definitely be returning!

My wife and I have just returned from our 5th visit to Mystwood, and (again) left with heavy hearts. We just love this place, and wish we could come and stay every month. We love the hut tub, wood fireplace, and the King beds are so welcoming and comfy.

The Mystwood Valley is just beautiful, and its great to wake up on a crisp Autumn morning to the fog lifting into a beuatiful day. A quick hot-tub wake-up followed by a BBQ fry-up of Bacon and Eggs (as provided in the breakfast pack) gets you off to a great start to go explore th Hunter valley, or... do nothing!

This trip was our first trip with our infant daughter and the 2 bed cabin was perfect for this, as we were provided with a porta-cot. She loved all the farm animals, including Stella the friendliest dog on earth.

We only go to the Hunter valley if they have availability here. Otherwise we postpone our trip to a different weekend. Why stay anywhere else

Mystwood is run by a wonderful family, and Colin will always greet you with a laugh. They are readily available and extremely helpful when you need them, but they certainly respect your privacy and leave you alone if you don't need them. Colin also runs a great wine tour if you book ahead, and we have done this with friends on previous visits and highly recommend.

We'll be back again...

Room Tip: Every Cabin is private. Order a BBQ pack and you won't go hungry

My partner and I just got back from two nights at Mystwood and I am so eager to boast to everyone how wonderful a place Mystwood is! To be honest the photos available online didn't give this place enough justice... it's just one of those things where you just have to be there to know how amazing this place is. I'm so glad we trusted tripadvisors ratings :)

We were greeted by a cute family of wild kangaroos and cows. I think they were quite stunned to see a little performance car driving on gravel because they just stood there staring at us haha. Our host Colin waited for our arrival at reception and with a short introduction he left us for the evening with a large warm loaf of home made bread which was one of our many surprises.

The cabin was so well maintained with a great view of the farm. First thing I did was open the fridge, don't ask me why. I guess it's a habit haha! we were provided with milk, bacon rashers, butter and a dozen of eggs! We also discovered oats in the cupboard and a variety of Twinings tea bags. This lasted the whole of our trip :)

We were sleeping on a bed of clouds! the king size bed had great quality bed covers and pillows, it was very hard to leave the bed in the mornings. oh and the soft robes....

Body wash, shampoo and conditioners are provided with the scent of lavender and mandarin was such a pleasant treat!

I wasn't so sure about having a spa outside but it was secluded with the view of the trees and the sun creeping through, the water at 37 degrees and the steam rinsing with the scent of eucalyptus... you can't say no to that.

Fireplace in the corner of the living room gave such a romantic warm feel as we stuffed our faces with cheese and crackers to Serendipity. (Colin provides a wide selection of DVDs)

Just 50 mins drive from Hunter Valley goodies, I can't imagine a better place.... we'll definitely be coming back here again and again and again.

Thank you for everything Colin, we wish you all the best!!!

As part of a five week tour of New Zealand and Australia we wanted a few days in the Hunter Valley to chill out and sample the wine. Our Aussie friends gave us the quizzical eyebrow when we said we were staying outside Wollombi rather than right in the heart of the HV, but how wrong they were.

The place is just perfect. Getting up the dirt track was a bit of a chore that our car wasn't completely happy with, but we quickly figured out how to dodge the occasional pothole.

There are just 4 retreats in 130 acres, complete with fantastic views and a couple of lakes. We saw kangeroos within 50 metres of our door on consecutive mornings and spent a pleasant afternoon and evening on our deck, watching the rain, cooking a barbecue and with the owner's dog sleeping at our feet. Truly heaven on earth after the bustle of the big cities. There are also two communal barbecues for those travelling in groups and plenty of walking opportunties for those unwilling to unwind.

The accomodation is clean, spacious and well laid out. Even better, the fridge contained enough bacon, eggs and other stuff to sort our breakfast for the duration of our stay. There was no bread - they were still baking it, but it arrived later.

Poor weather prevented us from jumping in our hot tub, but we didn't feel cheated. Although this place is out of the way it's hardly slumming it. If you want to just sit and watch a DVD, there's a big library available without charge .There is satellite TV but no internet connection unless you go to reception. Getting a mobile phone signal involves a trip into town, but why bother? The journey to Wollombi gets you access to a store and an inn that gets good reviews; we never made it to either. Cessnock is maybe twenty minutes drive away.

The owner and his son were remarkably pleasant and accomodating. We strolled down to the reception to do a little washing and just left it there. It came back in the afternoon, dried and folded, along with the massive, good value, top quality barbecue pack we requested. Coming from the UK, we expected to get a few burgers and some limp salad. We got sausages, beautiful thick sirloin steak, nice salad, corn on the cob and baked potatoes. Really too much to eat but we did it justice. Not once but twice.

In this age of uniformity there are too few likeable, real characters out there but be assured, you'll find one at Mystwood. I'll say no more on this subject - you need to experience the owner for yourself.

A wine tour was also wrapped into the deal we did. Good value and very much a case of "what do you like to drink and I'll fix the itinerary to suit". We visited small, specialist places rather than the big commercial organisations and were happier for having done so.

We seldom visit the same place twice - life's too short to go over the same old ground. But this will be one of the rare exceptions, we'll definately book again next time we travel from the other side of the world to visit Australia. Next time, our stay will be longer.

Maybe if there was WiFi in the retreats we'd have been able to keep in touch with home, but on reflection, it wouldn't have been half so relaxing as it was.

Room Tip: Just four retreats spread over maybe 150m, so there are no pitfalls to watch out for.

This is a wonderful place to stay. My fiance & I spent 4 nights over Easter in a cabin. It is so peaceful. Your outdoor spa is on a constant 38 degrees and the bush land setting very calming & romantic. The cabin itself has a huge king size bed with top quality sheets & pillows and plush robes. We had some lovely visits from Stella (the resident dog) who would chill out with us on the balcony while we played board games & cooked BBQ's. (She'll even accompany you on a walk to the large dam on the property if you like) The picnic packs are great value with meat, salad, corn & potatoes. The breakfast pack stocked in the fridge when we arrived supplied us with bacon & eggs for brekkie our whole stay (Plus the huge loaf of home baked bread!). If you are staying as long as we did just take some other food you would like as there isn't really much around the area but the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need - we actually cooked a mini roast for Easter sunday in the cabin. You will definitely leave a lot more relaxed & rested - exactly what we were looking for. The staff are very helpful but don't bother you at all, you pretty much feel like you're the only ones there as the cabins are spaced out nicely. Will be back - probably during winter so we can crank up the log fire!

Room Tip: All rooms are great!

We have been going to Mystwood for a number of years, and recently got engaged there. We are both well-travelled and this is our favourite place in the world. The accommodation is immaculate - you're constantly discovering little details that make you realise how much thought has gone into guest comfort. The food and wine selections are equally impressive. And the service is incomparable - Colin and the rest of the family are gracious, welcoming hosts whose relaxed and positive approach to everything always makes sure the stay is easy. Whether you're looking for a quiet break or a bit of a fun and adventurous few days away, this place caters brilliantly for both and we can't commend it highly enough.

Tips: make sure you try the barbecue hampers; go for a picnic up at the dam if you can (we only discovered this on our last trip and it's a pity we didn't do it earlier!); take Colin's wine tour which is a real treat; visit the Wollombi pub, especially on a Sunday evening when the friendly locals are out.

Fantastic place to stay

What an amazing place to stay. If you want a relaxing weekend away from the rat race this is the place to stay. The cabin we stayed in was tastefully decorated, clean and very comfortable with everything you could need. We didn’t use the spa as the weather was a bit hot to be jumping in a spa but when we come back in winter this will be a must. The surrounding farm and bush areas make you feel like you are the only people for a million miles.
Now the food, we pre ordered a dinner hamper, it was fantastic. There was enough food to feed a family and yet there was only two of us. The complimentary breakfast provisions, bacon, eggs etc was great. Sitting on the deck, cooking up a storm on the bbq in the morning was the icing on the cake.
We will definitely be back.

Can highly recommend a stay at Mystwood.
