“Bliss in the Bush”
Reviewed 25 March 2014

This was our second visit to Somewhere Unique to celebrate our Anniversary. We have found it the perfect place to escape to as we feel relaxed as soon as we arrive. The Lowanna retreat is secluded and a haven for bird life. Of the 2 retreats, I feel this one has the better aspect and is nicely tucked away. Waking with a mist over the valley and the sounds of blue wrens and butcher birds was bliss. We were also visited by a wallaby and her joey. The bench seat on the top of the escarpment is a beautiful place to sit, ponder and tuck in to the fantastic cheese plate. It was a perfect spot to sit in the evening to watch the day drift away.
We had chosen the wine and dine package which left us very much self contained for the weekend. This included a breakfast hamper, ample Barbecue package and a 3 course lunch at award winning Margan Restaurant in Broke. We were able to buy the supplies needed at the general store in Wollombi to cover us for Saturday dinner.
Although we have never met, we felt like friends and not guests from the first communications with Melanie to the welcome message left on the notice board.. I cant speak highly enough of Somewhere Unique and know we will definitely be back

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your very positive review, and it was wonderful to welcome you for a second visit. Great to hear you enjoyed the local flora and fauna, and the general peace and tranquility we provide here.

The Wine & Dine Package is a great way to sample the local area, with lunch or dinner at Margan Restaurant in Broke being a highlight.

We look forward to welcoming you both again soon.

Kind regards

My partner and I stayed in the Allawah retreat and it was perfect. When we arrived, I thought someone was in the house as I could hear a little noise, but when we opened the door we discovered that some romantic music was playing on the stereo. This was the perfect way to start our little break, and made us smile straight away.

Melanie and Grant, the owners, have thought of EVERYTHING! We had the fridge stocked up, music, DVDs, games, bikes, an umbrella (just in case) and even bird food in case we wanted to watch the birds fluttering about.

I would totally recommend Somewhere Unique for a fabulous break - we will 100% be going back next time we're in the area.

My husband and I stayed in the Allawah retreat for 2 nights in early February to celebrate our wedding anniversary, availing of their Romance package. Right from the beginning, communication from Melanie (the owner) was 5 star quailty. She sent us a couple of emails providing information about the local area and suggesting activities, even so far as informing us when a local restaurant started offering dinner reservations for a local spanish inspired flamenco night - we made a booking just in the nick of time! Thanks Melanie!

The retreat is absolutely faultless and she has anticipated our every need. In our opinion, she has provided everything a 5 star hotel would normally provide but has added her own extra special touch that would make your stay memorable. From the small tube of sunscreen to the seeds for the bird feeder for the cockatoos outside our deck, from the bikes to the binoculars and the bird watching book and from the picnic blanket to the thermos for that impromptu picnic; she has left nothing to chance. We also loved the handwritten note she left us on the board outside our retreat. We are used to staying in hotels when we are out and about and I was mildly apprehensive prior to booking. Mel has changed our minds and our opinions regarding luxury self-contained lodging completely.

Our bed was super comfortable, the 2 person tub overlooking Hunter Valley's magnificent scenery did wonders for our poor overstressed "city" muscles and psyche. The amenities are all top quality - lovely Lavender amenities and Sheridan towels. We loved the spacious bathroom and the rainwater showerhead the most. candles everywhere set the scene for a trully romantic weekend. If we could pack up the bathroom, we would! Bearing in mind that I am the biggest neat freak out there, the cleanliness of the property is bordering on surreal. Everything is just so clean and dust free (trust me, I looked!). :)

Our fridge and pantry were both well stocked with our included breakfast and dinner provisions. We truly enjoyed the chocolate fondue and the cheese platter. The cheeses we enjoyed on our deck with a bottle of bubbly while admiring the scenery - a perfect way to start our stay.

Complimentary internet was fast and allowed us to skype our kids good night! Very much appreciated. :) Beware no signal for Vodafone users but not an issue at all as this allowed us to truly enjoy our getaway.

This has been our most relaxed since having kids! We will definitely be back, next time we plan on staying at the other retreat, Lowannah and have already recommended it to friends and family. For couples needing to get away for some R&R, look no more. I wish there was a higher rating than 5 as this property definitely delivers and more. The property lives up to its name, "Somewhere Unique". Welcome home...

Dear Aquarianchick,

Thank you for your very detailed review - it is wonderful to read that your experience here has changed your views on this boutique style of accommodation. I think we have a lot to offer over standard hotel style accommodation!

As you mention we do provide complimentary wi-fi for our guests, however the mobile reception is patchy. Telstra and Optus coverage is available in the village, and in some spots on our property. We do provide a phone in each retreat if you need to use it.

Thanks again for considering us "5 stars". We look forward to welcoming you both again soon.

Kind regards

If you are looking for something different Somewhere Unique in Wollombi is the place for you. My wife and I booked the Romance Package for four days as a Christmas present to one another and we stayed in the Allawah Retreat while visiting the Hunter Valley area from the UK.. Melanie and Grant, the owners, have thought of absolutely everything, the retreat is first class with everything being of the highest quality, we could not have asked for anything more, all of our food was provided and available on our arrival. Our package included our Breakfast packs, a BBQ pack, a Deli pack, a Cheese Platter and an excellent Chocolate Fondue, therefore we did not have to venture far to eat. We enjoyed long walks around the Wollombi area, cycling up and down the hill to the retreat proved a step too far, we saw kangaroos and parakeets in the wild and were treated to the constant cicada chorus, we visited the historic town and local wineries as well as touring the Hunter Valley area, where we were made to feel most welcome. We took advantage of the free wine tasting on offer at the Magan Vineyards in Broke where we also enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch. Somewhere Unique is truly 5 stars, very luxurious, comfortable, relaxing and romantic. We look forward to returning again sometime in the future. Thank you again Melanie & Grant for everything.

Dear TdotMdot,

Thank you for your lovely review, and I'm glad you enjoyed your Romance Package - that is certainly our most popular package! Sounds like you had a wonderful trip to Australia. The flora and fauna is certainly a little different to that in the UK.

We look forward to welcoming you both again next time you visit.

We arrived at Somewhere Unique on a very hot day in January for a Romance package for my husband's 60th Birthday - walked in to the beautiful retreat to find not only the air conditioner going so that the house was cool but also to the strains of Norah Jones. Such a fantastic first impression. I am particular about what I want in accommodation - our retreat was faultless; spacious, well designed, well appointed, lots of little extra goodies and the meals provided in the package were superb. We may have gone for his birthday but I had just as much enjoyment as the food / cheeses / wine/ chocolate fondue/ breakfast goodies meant so little extra work for me to organise. The view from Lowanna was just beautiful. Everything had been thought about, even to having two different verandahs to sit on depending on the time of day and where the sun was. THE best spot though, was the bench near the edge of the escarpment especially just as the sun was coming up. Peaceful and a good spot for watching the birds and wildlife.
It must have been good - my husband was already planning a return visit in winter - to make use of the fireplace!! And this was before we had even left!!

Room Tip: 2 retreats, both well appointed, Lowanna though has a more extensive view of the valley.

I have to say that this is our second time staying at Somewhere unique. We have tried both retreats and both are equally luxurious with fantastic views. I am very fussy about accommodation and always do plenty of research to find the best place. I can definitely say that this place is 5 stars! and excellent value for money! The accommodation is luxurious, secluded and very relaxing. The bed is extremely comfortable and the place is spotless. Every detail is thought of to make the stay comfortable, romantic and luxurious. The breakfast provisions and the little touches are second to none! The hospitality is excellent! You are always made feel special and very welcome! You leave the place feeling rejuvenated! I highly recommend somewhere unique and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Both retreats are equal in furnishings, comfort and superb views!

We chose to stay at Somewhere Unique at Wollombi for 2 nights to attend the Alicia Keys concert in the Hunter Valley. We originally tried to find accommodation closer to Pokolbin - but I'm so glad everything was sold out because this place was an absolute treat. A true escape from busy Sydney life. Absolutely secluded and no noise except for the beautiful wildlife.
Melanie and Grant have a great eye for detail and made us feel welcome even before we arrived. The self cook BBQ pack and breakfast hamper was delicious and included mostly local produce. Every little touch of luxury made it easy to relax - and the decor was tastefull. Every little thing we needed was already thought of. The in house massage was excellent.
We will definitely be back. Perhaps in winter to try out the fireplace.

Dear SydneyGirl80,

Thank you for your great review, and terrific to hear to enjoyed the concert in the vineyards. It's easy to get to the concerts from Wollombi, as Rover Coaches operate a bus which collects our guests from the end of the street. The best of both worlds - all the fun of a concert, and then peace and quiet for the rest of the weekend!

We look forward to welcoming you both again soon.
