We enjoyed paddling the river and battling water fights with other rafts. However it was clear that the trip was a very abbreviated version due to water conditions. We should have been told this before paying full price. We actually were told we had to have lunch first instead of stopping part way through our trip so we had hotdogs and potato salad at 1045! If we didn't stop so often to swim around we could have done the trip in about an hour.

We felt a little gipped.

Awesome experience.. 12 miles, 5 hrs, almost 17 rapids of class II and III... great guides.. fabulous friends.. good climate and nice water. What else you can ask for..

But few things to note - Even though i say guide, its not like each raft has one.. there are only 3 of them for the entire pack.. One lead the way.. One stays in between and last one sweeper with collect all leftovers.. including paddles and bodies ;-)

Its doesnt seem too dangerous but too many rocks.

But thats what a adventure ride is all about. So get out there and have some fun.

The Lehigh River Gorge is a great Class II-III whitewater adventure. The trip is about 12 miles and takes about 5 hours on the river. My family and I have done the river trip previously but this was our first experience with Pocono Whitewater Outfitters. Compared with other outfitters, this company really fell short.

First, the put-in. Normally (at least with other locations and other rafting companies) the bus drops you at a staging area and you get into the raft which is alongside the river. Not so in this case; we had to walk about 1/3 mile through the woods, then paddle down a small creek and push the raft down a log incline. Not the best start, to say the least.

This operator put far too many boats out (about 30) at one time. Worse, the guides failed to space the rafts out properly so that there were numerous avoidable, and dangerous, collisions. Even when a rafter was in danger, the guides were slow to react and ineffective at best. This is not an outfitter with which I would trust my safety and well being in the future.

While other raft outfitters provide a hot shower and snack (e.g. hot dogs) at the end of the run, PWO did not. There was food for purchase at inflated prices, which I felt was a ripoff.

There are other excellent outfitters in the Jim Thorpe area - for instance, Jim Thorpe Rafting (which I've used in the past) and Whitewater Challengers (which I have not tried), and some others. Try them instead.

The experience was excellent. You don't have to be a swimmer since everyone gets a life vest. The staff is wonderful. You also get to enjoy the scenery. If you don't like to get wet this is not for you. People bring their water guns to make sure you get wet. No experience necessary although it is helpful.

The rafting itself was fun!!! The guides were knowledgeable and made the trip fun! We booked through our hotel. The cost was $35 and that included lunch. They picked us up and took us to the check in point. It seemed like chaos. No flip flips or open toed shoes allowed. We bought shoes, but nobody informed us that water shoes can be rented there. We had a quick instruction meeting then got on a bus to take us to the town of Jim Thorpe where we got on the Lehigh River to begin our adventure. By the time we got there we felt like we we immigrants who were just processed through Ellis Island.
The rafting was fun. We went 8 miles the river, stopping halfway for lunch which they provided (hot dogs, PB $ J, potato salad, apple and water....I recommend packing your own lunch). They give each raft a bucket for bailing out water if need be, but they encouraged people to dump buckets of water on other rafters and you passed them.
The guides let you know when is a good time to get out and swim along side the raft.
At the end you can buy a picture of your group in the raft for $10. Overall it was a fun experience and plan on doing it again.
