Recommended by locals, we stayed two nights at the Inn in Jim Thorpe. The room was nicer than expected and the location is great. There's a New Orleans-style balcony on the second floor where we ate a take-out dinner and people watched. Legend has it the place is haunted, which added to the fun. Just outside the hotel are several nice shops and good restaurants. A walk around town is interesting and appealed to the photographer in us. A short drive away is the Number 9 Coal Mine. The tour there is unique, educational and amazing, and we highly recommend it.
