Blue Dolphin Holiday Resort
Reviewed 18 January 2014

We have stayed at the Blue Dolphin numerous times and this time didn't disappoint. It really does have something to offer the whole family - great position right on the river for water activities and plenty to do in the park with the pools, jumping pillow etc.
Only negative this time was that someone stole an expensive fishing rod and tackle box from our verandah of our family cabin - very disappointing, so make sure you keep things safe.

We have stayed at Blue Dolphin before and I experience was ok this time we camped for four nights and had to leave a day early as it was not so great. The management has changed and there were a lot of things that didn't match up to our last stay. The most annoying thing was that the amenities across from our site where cleaned at 1.00am, the noise woke us up every night. Some campers where up partying to 2.00am and there was no sight of any night duty staff to tell them to be quiet, rule is no noise after 10.00pm. We complained to front desk and all they had to say that they'll pass the complaint on..
This camp is well know for the amazing activities for the children but not this time, my kids were not impressed with what little they had to offer. Also what was also annoying was that adults where drinking alcohol while sitting in the swimming pool which was never allowed before.
I would not recommend this place as its very noisy, the grounds weren't very well maintained and the new management didn't seem to care too much, its not as good it was with the previous owners.

Room Tip: Powered tents sites and as well as the cabins a very expensive during school holidays.

We recently stayed at the Blue Dolphin over the New Year period. We got stuck in peak traffic on our way up from Forster- resulting in an 11 hour drive with two little kids. We pulled into the resort around 6:30pm anxious to set up our tent and get the kids to bed- only to find out that they had made a mistake and booked us in for the following night. Luckily we got "the last site left" and we had a place to sleep. The next day we were instructed to have our gear packed up by 10am so we could move to our scheduled site for the remainder of our 5 night stay. We did as we were instructed- and were ready to go by 10am only to find out the people hadnt yet checked out of our new site. Not only did we have to wait around- but we missed out on an entire day of planned activities. Not to mention the giant hassle, and the hot weather. Once we got to our new site, the remainder of the trip was great. The pools were fabulous, the beach was nice, and the location was pretty good, although a decently long walk into town- we usually drove because the weather was too warm to walk.
I will add- when we went in to sort out our new site, the staff were not very sympathetic or accommodating and actually rude about it to my husband. They rushed us to get packed up from our site, only to have us sit around and wait for our new site. They did compensate us with a $40 gift voucher (only to be used during low season this year) which in my opinion did not come close to compensating us for our troubles + the entire day we lost out on by moving sites. I understand they have gone through a management change between when we booked and when we arrived, so they put the mix up down to "old management"- however it seems the new management didnt care to smooth things over other than a $40 credit- which we can't even use on our booking for next year.

I went to rebook for next year, and they suddenly changed the $100 deposit to now 25% of the total stay- and increased their rates (which are already sky high) from $108 p/n for a powered site to $112 per night. Pretty absurd for a camp site. The staff we have been dealing with have been nothing but rude and un-accommodating. I think we will pass on our annual visit .. and look elsewhere. A shame, because we have enjoyed our time there in the past..

What an expensive camp site, although the location was fine. This was an extremely busy part of the season and the park was full however the prices were exorbitant. Added to that the facilities were definitely not cleaned as often as they should have been with so many people using them and the weather very hot. We were definitely disappointed with value for money. However I must say Yamba seems like a lovely town and we would like to revisit, perhaps staying somewhere else.

Room Tip: For the price we paid the service should have been excellent

I grabbed a 'tropical' cabin for 1 night to break up a long drive home. Without any exaggeration, it was the most overpriced accommodation I have ever seen. Kicking myself for paying $300 for one night for what is nothing more than a basic donga.

When I walked in it was a 'tropical' 47 deg until I fired up the prehistoric air con unit. I'm sorry, but for $300, I wouldn't mind walking into a cool room after a long drive. Despite the tiny size of the donga, it took the air con about 2 hours to cool the room.

Other highlights included 1 x 19" TV which worked half the time, a double bed that did a perfect impression of a large single bed, a shower that I had to get out of (watch the toilet less than 30cm from the shower) to turn around and get back into to wash my back and a general feeling of claustrophobia.

Whilst everything else was fine, kids had a great time out of the donga, they have no business ripping people off, and there is no doubt I was.

This is our second stay at the Blue Dolphin and our return visit has not disappointed, staying in a waterfront villa we are able to watch and indulge in water sports throughout the day. The resort caters well to young families with 2 pools, waterslides, jumping pillows, kayaking, resort buggies and ample fishing and boating opportunities. This is all available within the picturesque town of yamba that has endless natural attractions that are free to visit...Highly recommend.

We were lucky to jag a waterfront ensuite site on our recent stay at the Blue Dolphin. These sites jut take your relaxation to the next level!

Pro's -
* waterfront sites are the bomb - beautiful views :)
* excellent facilities - 2 pools, playground, jumping pillow, camp kitchen, bbq areas, ensuites, laundries, shop etc
* lockable ensuites
* loads of scheduled activites to keep the kids entertained - both free and at an additional cost
* bbq's and tables (under shelter) provided throughout the 'park
* reasonably large sites
* great service - very friendly staff across the board - nothing is too much trouble. When we arrived someone had parked on our site, they were promptly and politely tracked down and asked to move
* cleanliness - ensuites, amentities, camp kitchen and bbq areas are very clean
* sunset drinks on the waterfront

Cons -
* it's not cheap
* location - 2.5k's out of town. The Calypso has a better location, but it's facilities aren't a patch on BD
* year to year bookings mean it is very hard to get in at peak times
* camp kitchen is a bit dated and the oven was removed some time ago and hasn't been replaced.

I suspect there is a plan to do some refurbishments - the tennis court is looking good and the 'tropical' pool has had a facelift. I look forward to seeing what the new managers do.

Highly recommend, especially for those with kids, or are big kids at heart!
