Owner description: In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

I recently went to Longwood for the Chrysanthemum festival. I had never been to this event before. The display is just amazing. The variety of chrysanthemums was truly stunning, not to mention the incredible "thousand-bloom" plant. Longwood has to be among the best and well-tended gardens anywhere. It is just beautiful in every season. Be sure to catch a 'fountains and fireworks' display during the summer season. Also, the Christmas display is a definite must-see with all the trees that are decorated with colored lights. What always strikes me is how well kept the property always is. Longwood is probably my favorite place to visit.

Beautiful gardens, well kept, clean, well signposted.
There is a conservatory with interesting, beautiful and nourished plants.
The plants that impressed us most were the Water Plates. We've never seen those plants although we've visited many botanical gardens all over the world. You can see them in different stages of growth.
In addition, there are in several places in the gardens, short musical fountains shows, nice.

I've been to Longwood Gardens twice- once in the spring and again in the Fall. Beautiful anytime of year, the tulips in the spring are incredible. The display is unbelievable and worth a trip, The entrance fee is a bit pricey but the upkeep of the garden must be costly.

These gardens were absolutely amazing. Visiting really makes you appreciate nature more in general. We visited during the Christmas season last year and it's definitely worth visiting again! There is so much to look at, so many indoor gardens, and outdoor gardens with thousands of different types of flowers and plants. There is a tropical room with all different types of palms, there is a cactus room with various types of cacti, there is an orchid room, a rose garden and the list goes on! There is even a topiary garden outside! The dancing fountain area is a must see during the holidays- at night the fountains are choreographed with Christmas music and lights. so beautiful. An all the trees are decked out with Christmas lights which is a sight to see at night! There are several Christmas trees indoors that are totally decked out with ornaments and lights- each tree has a different color theme. Visiting here during the holidays really gets you into the Christmas spirit! But by no means do you have to visit during the winter months, Longwood Gardens is beautiful all year round!
