“A diamond in the rough”
Reviewed 28 April 2014 via mobile

La Pena has really good authentic food with good service and a clean cheerful atmosphere. The exterior is a little bizarre ( hence "the rough", but I loved it and will go back very, very soon! By the way, the food is much better than a relatively expensive restaurant in Wayne!

“Excellent Mexican Casual Dining”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

This is very fresh, tasty, no-frills Mexican cuisine. They start you out with pumpkin seeds, so we ordered some chips, salsa and guacamole and they were quite different from the run-of-mill fare, but very fresh and very good There is a large, varied menu and everything we ordered was good, hot and tasted great.
The atmosphere is very low-key, pretty much like a fast-food restaurant - bare bones. Prices are reasonable and service is no-frills also, but very friendly.
Probably a great place to go for a quick lunch or take-out.

“The Real Deal”
Reviewed 21 February 2014 via mobile

By far the best authentic Mexican food in the area. Having eaten Mexican food for several years in N.M. this food is awesome. Don't expect salsa and chips. Instead you'll snack on roasted pumpkin seeds! The dishes are spicy so be prepared with some of the homemade Pinapple Water to wash it down. Good stuff.
Don't judge this book by its cover, outside looks are cool but the food inside is hot & delicious.
Check it out.

“Excellent Mexican Food”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

La Pena is a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. None of the Tex-Mex, watered down versions of food that seem to dominate the landscape these days. Everything we had was top notch, including the staples of refried beans (the best I've ever had, including in Mexico) and rice. Both of us had superb, flavorful food, served at the table within about 10 minutes of ordering. The only thing that prevents a 5 star rating is the ambiance, but that's not why you should go to La Pena.

“Best Mexican in Kennett Square”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

Don't be fooled by the yellow and brown striped exterior or by the utilitarian looking interior - this place is the real deal and has a friendly staff, reasonable prices and a customer service attitude that can't be beat! Start your meal with chips, salsa and guacamole. You get fresh from the fryer chips, just made guac and terrific salsa. Be aware that when the proprietor's say spicy, they mean spicy - this is VERY true with the devil fish - tasty but searing. We have tasted just about everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. If you don't see what you want or are unsure, ask the owner, "What should I have tonite?" the answer will be a series of questions including: do you like spicy? are you very hungry? do you want meat or fish? and then a statement, "I have just what you want." And it will be just what you wanted. Be aware, be hungry because the plate that will be presented will be full, appetizing and filling. Oh, and say hola for me when you go.
